You can identify gear for free by talking to an identification NPC in town. During the campaign that is The Hooded One. After the campaign, the official Early Access Content Update 0.3.0 patch notes say Doryani provides identification in your hideout. If you are away from an NPC, a Scroll of Wisdom identifies one item from anywhere in your inventory, but it is a consumable and not free.
Which NPC identifies items, and where
The location depends on where you are in your progression. The official Path of Exile 2 patch notes for Early Access Content Update 0.3.0 draw the line clearly:
“The Hooded One can no longer be placed in your Hideout. You are still able to identify items from him in towns. Doryani will continue to serve as the source of identifying items in your Hideout once you’ve completed the campaign.”
In practical terms, that gives you two options:

The Hooded One cannot be placed in your hideout. If you are looking for identification inside your hideout, you need Doryani, and that only applies after the campaign is complete.

Identifying with The Hooded One during the campaign
- Travel to town and find The Hooded One.
- Open his dialogue and choose Identify Items.
- The service works on the unidentified items in your inventory, so you do not need to pick them one by one.
The service is free. The “free” label refers to the NPC service only; it does not extend to scrolls.
Identifying with Doryani after the campaign
Once you have completed the campaign, Doryani takes over identification in your hideout. Use the same approach: open Doryani’s dialogue and select the identify option. The official notes do not describe a separate menu path for this, so expect the same general dialogue flow you used with The Hooded One.

Identifying anywhere with a Scroll of Wisdom
The Scroll of Wisdom is the option when you do not want to walk back to an NPC. The Path of Exile 2 Wiki’s Scroll of Wisdom entry gives the interface instruction as: “Right click this item then left click an unidentified item to apply it.”
- Open your inventory.
- Right-click the Scroll of Wisdom.
- Left-click the unidentified item you want to identify.
Each scroll identifies one item. The trade-off is that you spend a currency item every time, so for a large stash of unidentified gear the NPC is the more economical choice.

A reported shortcut: Ctrl+left-click on Doryani
Players in a Path of Exile forum thread about an identification-themed hideout decoration have reported that Ctrl+left-clicking Doryani performs the same identification as the dialogue option. This is a community report, not official documentation, and I could not confirm it in the official patch notes. It may behave differently on console, controller, or with custom control schemes, so do not rely on it as a guaranteed input. If the shortcut does not work for you, use the dialogue option described above.
Path of Exile 1 is different
Path of Exile 2 is a separate game from Path of Exile 1, and vendor identification options and shortcuts may not carry over. Do not apply the steps in this article to Path of Exile 1 without checking its own instructions.

Check the current patch before relying on this
The NPC placement rules above come from the 0.3.0 Early Access patch notes. Later updates can move identification services or change how NPC interactions work. If you are reading this after a major content update, check the newest official patch notes first, then confirm that The Hooded One and Doryani still provide identification in the locations described.
