For long-term storage in the original Oblivion, put items in a container inside a home you own. Bethesda’s PC manual warns that belongings left in containers you do not own may not be there when you return. For any specific chest, barrel, or other container outside your home, verify that it is safe in your edition before trusting it with valuable gear.
Where should you store items?
A home you own is the safest general choice supported by Bethesda’s guidance. The manual says houses of varying qualities are for sale in towns and that furnishings can be bought after you own a house. It does not give a house price in the passage covering these points.
The manual’s warning is explicit: “Warning! Don’t leave things in containers you don’t own! They may not be there when you come back for them!” It does not identify a named speaker or provide a universal reset timer.
How to put an item in a container on PC
Bethesda’s instructions for the original PC game are to open the container, display your inventory, then select the item you want to place inside. Controls can differ on other platforms or in other editions, so follow the relevant edition’s controls.

Can you use a chest, barrel, or sack that is not in your home?
Do not judge safety by appearance. Secondary guides discuss particular storage options, but they do not establish a complete, official list of safe containers. Before storing important items in a specific container outside a home you own, check a trustworthy guide for the exact game edition you are playing.
That distinction matters because the manual cited here is for the original PC game. Its general warning is useful, but it does not verify every container in the original game or establish that a particular container works the same way in Oblivion Remastered.
