You improve gear by applying crafting currency directly to the item in your inventory, by adding sockets and runes, and, when you want to break down gear you no longer need, by using the Salvage Bench. Which route you use depends on what you want to change: a base property, a modifier, a fixed socket bonus, or crafting materials back from an item you are discarding.
Quality currency upgrades the base property
Quality currency changes the base property of a matching item type. It does not reroll modifiers, and it does not raise the item’s item level. Apply the currency to an item of the type it names.

Use this route when the item’s current defense or damage is the limiting factor and its modifiers are already the ones you want.
Adding sockets and runes with an Artificer’s Orb
An Artificer’s Orb adds an augment socket to eligible armor or weapons, as long as the item has not reached its socket limit. The socket can hold a rune or a soul core. Socket limits vary by equipment category, so check the item’s socket count before applying the orb.

Community-maintained references report that the orb can drop from any source. They also record that patch 0.2.0e added twelve fixed campaign locations where it can be found. If you are hunting for one, use the current in-game location information rather than an older list.
- Confirm that the item is eligible armor or a weapon and that it has fewer sockets than its category allows.
- Apply the Artificer’s Orb to the target item in your inventory. The item should gain one augment socket.
- Socket a compatible rune or soul core into the new socket.
Because runes are fixed bonuses, this route suits items whose base and modifiers are already strong and need one more stat. It does not change the modifiers the item already has.

Changing modifiers with crafting currency
Modifier crafting is a separate system from quality. Crafting currency can change an item’s modifiers, but what it can do depends on the currency and on the item type it accepts. Read the restrictions printed on the currency before you use it.
Item level sets the pool of modifiers an item can roll. Quality currency does not change that. If you need modifiers that only appear at a higher item level, you need a base item with a higher item level, which you must find or obtain. Upgrading a low-level base will improve it without unlocking the higher-level affixes.

Recovering materials at the Salvage Bench
The Salvage Bench converts eligible gear into crafting resources. According to the crafting references, the bench is unlocked through the “Finding the Forge” quest. Eligible items are destroyed in the process, and the resources they return are currency materials.
Salvage is a one-way decision. Socketed runes are not returned, and socketed currency is not refunded. If you want to remove a rune from an item, salvaging that item will lose the rune, so it is not a way to reuse the rune.

Choosing the right route
- Weak base defense or damage: apply the matching quality currency to the item.
- Wrong modifiers on an otherwise good base: use a modifier-crafting currency that fits the item type, and check its stated restrictions first.
- Need one more stat slot: add a socket with an Artificer’s Orb and fit a compatible rune or soul core.
- Need affixes from a higher-level pool: find or obtain a higher-item-level base, because quality will not change the item level.
- Unwanted gear that you want to convert into materials: use the Salvage Bench, accepting that the item and any socketed rune or currency are lost.

Guides are not a substitute for the in-game text, because patch-to-patch changes to currency rules and drop locations are common in this game.
In short, Path of Exile 2 does not have one upgrade station. Apply quality currency directly to matching gear, use Artificer’s Orbs to add sockets, and use the Salvage Bench only when you are ready to lose the item.
