Best for precision swordplay: Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Capcom’s combat breakdown centers the action on blade-on-blade encounters: parries and deflections create openings for Issen critical attacks, while Oni-powered abilities add another layer to the sword fighting. Best for weapon and ability variety: CONTROL Resonant
CONTROL Resonant takes a broader approach to close-range combat. Remedy describes the Aberrant as a transforming melee weapon and its combat as an aggression loop: melee attacks restore ability resources, abilities stun enemies for executions, and executions temporarily increase melee damage. That design has not convinced every reviewer. Xbox Wire’s hands-on preview highlighted build variety and later encounters that discouraged button-mashing, but a preview is not the same as a completed review. PC Gamer’s post-launch review judged melee combat a weak point. Taken together, the coverage makes CONTROL Resonant a plausible alternative for players drawn to its systems, not the safest recommendation for someone whose top priority is how melee hits feel. Is Fable a 2026 contender?
No. Playground Games’ official PlayStation Blog post gives Fable a February 23, 2027 launch date, so it should not be counted among 2026 releases. Associate Game Director William Kennedy described the team’s aim as making combat “smooth and responsive and fun,” including melee strikes, chained abilities and magic. What the evidence can—and can’t—establish
These games offer different kinds of melee combat, and the available coverage does not establish an objective winner across all 2026 releases. Onimusha has the stronger case for focused swordplay, supported by Capcom’s description and TechRadar’s review. CONTROL Resonant offers a more varied weapon-and-ability concept, but its reception on melee feel is mixed. An unresolved release-date discrepancy also means an exact Onimusha launch date should not be stated here: Capcom’s announcement says September 25, 2026, while TechRadar’s review page identifies September 4, 2026.
