For NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and original PlayStation, the ANBERNIC RG35XX SP is the best default for most buyers: its clamshell protects the screen, its 4:3 display suits NES, SNES, and PS1, and its Linux H700 hardware is built for this generation of games. Choose the RG40XX H instead if you want a larger 4:3 screen and dual analog sticks; choose the RG34XX if Game Boy Advance is your priority. These systems do not require an Android model or the extra cost of hardware aimed at PS2 and GameCube.

Which ANBERNIC handheld should you buy for these games?

Start with the shape and screen, not the processor. The current Linux XX models discussed here share the Allwinner H700 quad-core Cortex-A53 at 1.5 GHz, Mali-G31 MP2 graphics, 1 GB of RAM, and 64-bit Linux. For the games in this question, the main differences are display ratio and resolution, controls, pocket protection, and how you like to hold a handheld.

  • Best default, especially if you like a GBA SP-style clamshell: RG35XX SP.
  • Best for 3D PS1 games or analog controls: RG40XX H for a larger screen, or RG35XX H for a more compact horizontal body.
  • Best GBA screen and landscape grip: RG34XX.
  • Best square screen for original Game Boy and Game Boy Color: RG CubeXX.
  • Lower-cost vertical option: RG35XX Pro; consider a basic RG35XX if the lowest price matters more than newer features.

These are recommendations within ANBERNIC’s Linux H700 range, not claims that one device runs every game perfectly. PS1 performance varies by game and settings; there is no official compatibility percentage for the line.

Why is Linux the right tier for NES, SNES, Game Boy, and PS1?

The Linux XX line is designed for retro systems through PS1, so an Android device aimed at PS2 or GameCube is usually unnecessary for this library. The H700 models handle 8- and 16-bit systems comfortably, while PS1 is a practical upper target: published H700 coverage describes the majority of the PS1 library running, with demanding 3D games sometimes needing frameskip or resolution adjustments.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That does not mean all XX models are interchangeable in use. The same chip can feel quite different in a vertical Game Boy-style body, a horizontal controller-style layout, or a clamshell that closes over the screen. Analog sticks may help with 3D PS1 movement and camera control, but many 2D games use the directional pad and do not need them.

Android models such as the RG406V, RG556, RG557, RG476H, and RG Cube without the XX suffix belong to a different, more expensive performance class. Consider them if your actual goal includes substantial PSP, GameCube, or PS2 play. For the systems named here, that extra capability is generally unused spend.

How do the best ANBERNIC models compare?

Use this table to narrow the choice by screen and controls. Prices are official-store sale prices observed on 29 October 2026; listings, configurations, and stock can change quickly, and regional retail prices may be higher.

Model Screen and shape Analog sticks Best fit Observed official sale price
RG35XX SP 3.5-inch, 640×480, 4:3; clamshell No Portable all-rounder with a lid protecting the screen $54.99
RG40XX H 4.0-inch, 640×480, 4:3; horizontal Dual Larger-screen NES, SNES, and PS1 play, especially 3D $64.99
RG35XX H 3.5-inch, 640×480, 4:3; horizontal Dual Compact horizontal controls for 3D PS1 $54.99 snapshot
RG34XX 3.4-inch, 720×480, 3:2; landscape No GBA-first play and an authentic landscape grip $56.99
RG34XX SP 3.4-inch, 720×480, 3:2; clamshell Two small sticks GBA-shaped screen with lid protection and some analog control $64.99
RG CubeXX 3.95-inch, 720×720, 1:1; square Dual Original Game Boy and Game Boy Color framing $61.99
RG35XX Pro 3.5-inch, 640×480, 4:3; vertical Dual Lower-cost vertical body with newer features $51.99
RG40XX V 4.0-inch, 640×480, 4:3; vertical Dual A larger display in a vertical grip $64.99

Prices above are snapshots rather than guarantees. For example, an October 28, 2026 listing snapshot put the RG35XX SP at $57.99 on sale and $64.99 regular, while the RG35XX H was $54.99 on sale and $67.99 regular. Check the ANBERNIC store for the current price, configuration, and warehouse availability before ordering. Official-store China-warehouse sale prices for the class were roughly $37–$65 on 29 October 2026; third-party EU and Australian retail can cost more.

Is the RG35XX SP the best choice for most people?

It is the strongest default if you want a pocketable, Nintendo-style device for games from Game Boy through PS1 and value a lid over analog sticks. The 3.5-inch 640×480 IPS display has a 4:3 ratio that suits NES, SNES, and much of PS1, while the clamshell protects the screen when the device is shut.

The official listing specifies an H700 processor, 1 GB RAM, dual microSD slots supporting cards up to 512 GB, Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5 GHz, Bluetooth 4.2, and a 3,300 mAh battery rated for eight hours. Time Extension’s reported play-time figure, cited by Gear Receipts and VGKami in October 2026, is 7–8 hours per charge; actual time depends on brightness, settings, and the games being played. The unit weighs 192 g closed and measures 89 × 85 × 27 mm, according to Electro Arcade’s 2026 size guide.

The compromises are important. There are no analog sticks, so this is not the pick for someone who wants analog camera or movement controls in 3D PS1 games. Reviews also report clicky buttons and inconsistent stock lid-sleep behavior. If button noise could bother someone nearby, or if you want to play long sessions with a horizontal grip, the H models are better fits. A clamshell adds a hinge as a wear point, too; treat the lid gently rather than snapping it shut.

ANBERNIC rates the battery at eight hours, and the official listing shows 82% five-star reviews (362 of 441) in the 2026 snapshot. Those are manufacturer-store and publication figures, not a guarantee of your own battery life or a substitute for choosing the right controls.

RG35XX SP vs RG35XX H: which one should you buy?

Choose the SP for a folding lid, screen protection, and a nostalgic clamshell body; choose the RG35XX H for a horizontal grip and dual analog sticks. Their 3.5-inch 640×480 4:3 displays and H700 platform put them in similar territory for this game library.

The H weighs 180 g and measures 145 × 69 × 16 mm, with dual sticks, HDMI output, dual speakers, and a 3,300 mAh battery advertised for up to eight hours. It is a more practical body for extended play or PS1 titles that benefit from analog movement. The SP is more compact when closed and easier to slip into a bag without exposing its screen, but it cannot match the H’s analog controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For plain 2D platformers, RPGs, and classic Nintendo games, the choice is mostly grip and portability. For 3D PS1, favor the H if you expect to use the sticks. If you want a larger screen than either, the RG40XX H is the more comfortable 4-inch alternative.

Which ANBERNIC is best for GBA or original Game Boy?

For Game Boy Advance, the RG34XX has the most purpose-matched display: its 3.4-inch 720×480 screen is 3:2, and GBA games can scale by an integer factor of three. It also has the landscape shape associated with the original GBA. For original Game Boy and Game Boy Color, the RG CubeXX’s 1:1 screen frames those games without stretching or letterboxing.

The RG34XX uses the H700 and 1 GB RAM, with dual microSD slots, Mini-HDMI, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, vibration, and a 3,500 mAh battery rated by ANBERNIC for seven hours. Retro Handhelds drain tests, cited by Pocket Retro Gamer in 2026, reported about 10 hours for GBA and 6–7 hours for PS1; those are source-reported results, not a universal runtime. Retro Dodo gave the RG34XX an 8.8/10 in a review updated in February 2025, as cited by Pocket Retro Gamer.

Published coverage describes GBA play as flawless at 3× integer scaling and reports strong results for GB/GBC, NES, SNES, Genesis, and PS1. N64 is hit-or-miss, while PSP, Dreamcast, and GameCube are poor targets. The main ergonomic caution is that the RG34XX’s inherited GBA-style body can feel cramped for larger hands. If that grip does not suit you, the RG40XX H gives you more room, though its 4:3 display is less closely matched to GBA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RG34XX SP uses the same 720×480 3:2 screen in a clamshell and adds two small analog sticks. Its hall-sensor lid sleep and 3,300 mAh battery rated for six hours distinguish it from the landscape RG34XX. Prefer it if pocket protection matters more than the slab’s grip and longer manufacturer-rated battery life.

For original Game Boy or GBC, the RG CubeXX’s 3.95-inch 720×720 1:1 display is the standout match; Electro Arcade identifies it as the H700 class’s bright exception at 500 nits. It weighs 246 g and includes dual sticks and RGB stick lighting. Its square screen is not ideal for NES, SNES, or PS1, which will not fill it as naturally as a 4:3 panel, so buy it for GB/GBC (or Pico-8) rather than as the most balanced device for this full list.

What if you want a cheaper vertical handheld?

The RG35XX Pro is a lower-cost vertical option with a 3.5-inch 640×480 4:3 screen, H700, 1 GB RAM, dual microSD slots, Wi-Fi multiplayer, vibration, and a 3,200 mAh battery rated for seven hours. Its observed official sale price was $51.99. The official listing says it can connect to a TV; one comparison table conflicts on HDMI availability, so verify the connection details for the exact listing and configuration before buying.

At 165 g and 117 × 81 × 20 mm, it is lighter than the horizontal H models. A basic RG35XX has also been listed by Pocket Retro Gamer at $44.99 as a lowest-cost way into Game Boy, GBA, and SNES, but that is a source-reported listing price rather than a current guarantee. The RG40XX V is the larger vertical alternative: it retains a 4:3 640×480 screen and dual sticks, at 201 g, for an observed $64.99.

What do ANBERNIC model numbers mean?

The name is a rough guide to the body and screen size, but it is not a full specification. “RG” identifies the product line; the digits broadly track screen size, while the third digit is a generation or variant marker rather than a promise of exact display dimensions. For example, RG34XX is 3.4 inches, RG35XX is 3.5 inches, and RG40XX is 4.0 inches.

  • XX: the budget Linux family discussed here, built around the H700 in these models.
  • H: horizontal layout with two sticks, as on RG35XX H and RG40XX H.
  • V: vertical Game Boy-style layout, as on RG40XX V.
  • SP: clamshell form, as on RG35XX SP, RG34XX SP, and RG SP.
  • Plus or Pro: revised versions within a family; check the actual listing for the features added.
  • Cube: a square-screen model; the XX version is the Linux H700 CubeXX.

Do not assume that a similarly named model has the same operating system or performance. The RG CubeXX is in this Linux class; the RG Cube without “XX” is an Android device. Likewise, ANBERNIC’s Android models are a different purchase decision from the XX models recommended for NES through PS1.

What should you know about games, firmware, and storage?

These handhelds are hardware with emulation software, not licensed game collections. The buyer supplies game files; a lawful, conservative approach is to create copies from games they own and to follow the rules that apply where they live. A retailer’s card containing thousands of preloaded games is a convenience bundle, not proof that those games are licensed.

Stock Linux firmware works, and community options include muOS and Knulli across much of the XX family, with GarlicOS associated particularly with classic RG35XX models. ROCKNIX is another named option. Installation steps and compatibility vary by device and release, so check that a firmware build explicitly supports your exact model before replacing the stock system. ANBERNIC’s update page lists May 2026 builds for several models, including RG34XX V1.0.6 and RG35XX H V1.2.4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan on a reputable microSD card rather than relying on the included one; stock cards are widely described as poor quality. Many retail bundles advertise 4,301 games on a 64 GB card, while official 16 GB configurations may be OS-only. There is also a specific storage caveat in ANBERNIC’s update guidance: after installing the OS on a 16 GB version, the card cannot be expanded or used to install ROMs, so use the second TF slot for games.

How should you charge an H700 handheld safely?

Check the label on your own unit and follow its stated input. Official listings for the RG35XX SP, RG34XX, RG40XX H, and RG CubeXX specify 5V/1.5A and say C-to-C charging is supported, while Electro Arcade’s H700 guide recommends a 5V/1A–5V/2A USB-A-to-USB-C charger and warns against USB-C-to-USB-C or PD/fast chargers because high-voltage negotiation can cause problems on this hardware class.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Because those instructions conflict, do not assume that every charger marketed as “fast” is safe, or that all hardware revisions behave identically. Match the voltage on the device label; avoid a charger that may negotiate higher-voltage PD output unless the unit’s own documentation explicitly supports it. The handhelds generally do not include a charging brick.

Which model is the most sensible one-device choice?

If you want one ANBERNIC mainly for NES, SNES, Game Boy, and PS1, the RG35XX SP is the balanced default: 4:3 for the home consoles, a protective lid, and enough performance for PS1 as the upper target. Switch to the RG40XX H for a larger screen and analog sticks, the RG34XX for GBA’s 3:2 display, or the RG CubeXX if original Game Boy and GBC matter most. The best choice is the one whose screen and controls fit the games you actually play—not the model with the biggest number or the most power.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect an ANBERNIC XX handheld to a TV?

Several models in this group include HDMI output, including the RG35XX SP, RG35XX H, RG40XX H, and RG34XX. Check the exact model listing for the port and cable type before ordering; the RG35XX SP comparison material identifies Mini-HDMI, so it needs a matching cable.

Can I use a Bluetooth controller with these handhelds?

The RG35XX SP listing specifies Bluetooth 4.2, and the RG34XX listing also includes Bluetooth. Pairing and controller support can depend on the firmware and emulator, so check the documentation for your chosen firmware if wireless play is essential.

Do I need Wi-Fi to play games on an XX handheld?

No: local gameplay does not require Wi-Fi. The RG35XX SP supports 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and the RG35XX Pro listing includes Wi-Fi multiplayer, but wireless features are separate from the basic offline emulation use case.

Are the screens easy to see outdoors?

Not all are: Electro Arcade reports that several H700 IPS panels, including those on the RG35XX H, RG34XX, and RG40XX H, wash out in direct sunlight. The same guide calls the RG CubeXX a brighter exception at 500 nits, though a square screen is a specialized fit for this library.
