Steam’s official material names Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and JCB as card brands that work with Steam, and lists Carte Bleue on one of its support pages. Which of these you can actually use depends on your storefront region, your card issuer, and what Steam shows at checkout.

The card brands Steam names

Two Steam pages cover card brands, and they do not list exactly the same networks. Steam’s payment-history support page names Visa, American Express, Mastercard, Carte Bleue, Discover, and JCB in its credit-card category. Steam’s refund-method page, scoped to the default displayed storefront, lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and JCB as methods that can refund to the original payment method.

Card brand Named on Steam’s credit-card payment-history page Named on Steam’s refund-method page (default displayed storefront)
Visa Yes Yes
Mastercard Yes Yes
American Express Yes Yes
Discover Yes Yes
JCB Yes Yes
Carte Bleue Yes Not stated

Treat this table as a set of brand names, not a guarantee. Neither page confirms that every card under these brands works in every country, and neither confirms that a given issuer will approve a specific transaction.

Why your region changes the answer

Steam shows payment options per storefront, so the methods you see depend on the region your account and store are set to. Steam’s Australia pricing page lists international credit cards and cash transfer as payment categories. That is one region’s list, and it shows why a single worldwide list would be misleading.

Debit cards

Steam’s card list is framed around credit-card brands. A debit card that runs on a listed network may still be accepted, but Steam does not say that every debit card works. Acceptance depends on the card issuer’s online purchase settings and on whether the card passes Steam’s checkout. Some banks restrict online or international transactions by default, so check with your bank if a debit card is declined.

Refunds: original payment method or Steam Wallet

Not every payment method can be refunded to the card or account you paid with. Steam’s refund page says that for some payment methods, an approved refund can only be issued to Steam Wallet. The refund-method list above tells you which brands support refunds to the original payment method in the default displayed storefront. It is not a list of every method accepted at checkout, so a method can be accepted for purchase and still send refunds to Wallet.

Adding funds to Steam Wallet

If a card is not accepted, or you prefer to pay through a balance, you can add funds to your Steam Wallet. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement states: “You may place funds in your Steam Wallet up to a maximum amount determined by Valve, by credit card, prepaid card, promotional code, or any other payment method accepted by Steam.” The agreement sets a maximum Wallet balance that Valve determines; the agreement itself does not state a number.

Steam Support also lists Steam Wallet Codes as a payment route. If you buy a Wallet code from a third-party seller, first confirm that it matches your Steam region and currency, and check the seller before you buy.

Billing information

Steam may ask for billing information even when you pay with Steam Wallet or a local payment method. Steam’s billing-information support page says location details can be needed for tax purposes. Enter your billing address exactly as it appears on your card or statement, because mismatched details are a common reason a payment is rejected.

  • Re-enter your billing details exactly as they appear on the card statement.
  • Try a different accepted method, or add funds to Steam Wallet and pay from the balance.

If none of these work, contact Steam Support with the payment method, country, and the message shown at checkout.
