In Throne and Liberty, you choose a weapon combination rather than selecting a traditional class. Start with the combat role you enjoy—protecting and controlling, healing and weakening, attacking at range, or fighting up close—then choose weapons that support it. There is no universally best pairing established by the available official descriptions.
What “class” means in Throne and Liberty
The game describes its system this way: “Choose your combat role by wielding weapons, not selecting classes.” You can combine any two weapons, and Weapon Mastery lets you select nodes that alter or empower skills. So your pairing is a starting point for shaping your combat style, not a permanent character-class choice. Official gameplay overview

Choose by the combat style you want
These descriptions are useful for identifying a starting role; they do not establish current damage rankings or show that any pairing is best in a particular mode. Official gameplay overview

- Protection and control: Sword and Shield is described as blocking attacks, protecting allies, and controlling fights by pulling or pushing enemies.
- Healing and weakening: Wand combines healing magic with offensive curses.
- Elemental ranged offense: Staff uses lightning and fire attacks.
- Fast close-range attacks: Daggers focus on precision strikes and poisoned-blade combinations.
- Close-range combos: Gauntlets use spiked strikes, combo chains, and defense-breaking attacks. They were added in update 4.0.0 on June 24, 2026. Update 4.0.0 notes
- Tactical support and control: Orb can protect allies, block enemies, and let you place and trigger Spheres remotely.
- Multi-target pressure and defense breaking: Spear is described as suited to fighting multiple enemies and breaking through defenses.
How to settle on a weapon combination
- Pick your preferred job in a fight. Decide whether you most enjoy protecting allies, helping them with healing, attacking from a distance, or engaging enemies up close.
- Choose a weapon that fits that preference. Use its description as a guide to its intended style, then pair it with a second weapon that adds a role or attack approach you want.
- Check current build advice for your mode. If you plan to invest substantial time or resources in a specific build, look for advice that applies to the mode you intend to play. Mastery and equipment systems change, so older rankings may no longer reflect current options.
Why older class rankings can become outdated
Update 4.0.0, published June 24, 2026, added Gauntlets, raised the maximum character level to 60, increased weapon mastery caps, and introduced additional Overall Masteries skills. Those changes affect progression and available options, but they do not show that any one combination is strongest. Update 4.0.0 notes
Update 4.9.0, published August 26, 2026, introduced Snowsoul Weapons, an equipment tier above Ascended Archboss Weapons. That is a gear update—not evidence that a particular weapon combination is the right choice for a new player. Update 4.9.0 notes

Quick recommendation
If you are unsure, choose the weapon whose description most closely matches the combat you want to experience, then use your second weapon to broaden that role or add a different style. Treat that as a playstyle decision, not a tier-list verdict: the official descriptions establish qualitative roles, but do not provide a current numerical comparison of combinations across PvE and PvP.
