Vermintide 2 has no single best career. Fatshark’s official material treats each career as a distinct role with its own weapons, abilities, health, and specialist function, and says talent choices should fit your loadout and playstyle. The right pick is the one whose role you want to play, whose learning curve you can live with, and whose job your team currently lacks.
Careers and classes: the same thing under two names
The game uses the word career. Fatshark’s New Player Guide says careers are equivalent to classes, and this article uses “career” throughout.
The count is where sources disagree. Fatshark’s game page still advertises 15 career paths. The newer official hero guide says each of the five heroes has four careers, which makes 20 in total. The two figures conflict, and the official pages do not explain the gap. If you need a number, use the hero guide’s structure and treat the store page figure as older.
What a career actually changes
Choosing a career is more than picking a cosmetic look. It changes several things at once:

- Combat role. Official career descriptions set out distinct jobs: melee front line, mobile damage, ranged specialist, control, and team support.
- Weapon access. Most careers carry a limited-ammunition ranged weapon, though the New Player Guide notes exceptions and career-specific weapon choices. Pick weapons around the threat you face and the mode you are playing.
- Health. Maximum health depends on the career.
- Career skill. Each hero has an individual career skill that recharges. It can save a teammate, knock back a monster, or target a special enemy.
Careers do not replace core combat. The New Player Guide recommends experimenting with weapon attack chains and treats blocking, pushing, and dodging as the central defensive tools. Blocking and pushing cost stamina, while dodging avoids attacks without spending stamina. A career that suits you still depends on those basics.
How to judge whether a career fits you
- Your preferred role. Decide whether you want to deal damage at range, hold the front, control enemies, or support teammates. This is the most important question, and the official descriptions answer it more directly than any ranking could.
- Team value. Careers cover teammates’ weaknesses. Communication and protecting allies are central to the official advice, so ask whether your group already has someone doing the job you are considering.
- Learning curve. Official material does not rank careers by difficulty. As an editorial lens, a forgiving pick is one whose main job works without precise aim or perfect ability timing. A high-ceiling pick rewards positioning, aim, or ability management, and punishes mistakes more.
- Mode. The New Player Guide was written for the Versus Beta and contains Versus-specific tactics. Do not assume its advice applies unchanged to PvE play or to every difficulty.
Two official examples with different trade-offs
Outcast Engineer: ranged firepower with a protection requirement
Fatshark calls Outcast Engineer a unique ranged specialist. Its career button brings out a steam minigun. Firing drains the ability bar, and reloading builds pressure back up. Fatshark describes it as extremely deadly at range, but also says it often struggles under pressure and does best when teammates keep it safe. Extra bombs are part of its kit.

This career suits a player who wants ranged damage and is comfortable managing ability uptime and positioning. The cost is that it is most effective when the team protects it, so a group with no one holding the front line will feel that weakness quickly.
Sister of the Thorn: control and team utility
Fatshark’s Patch 4.6 notes say the career changes were meant to give Kerillian more ways to help the team, specifically by debuffing enemies and controlling combat flow. The notes list Blackvenom effects that increase damage taken, along with changes to Thornwake talents.

Read this as the official design direction in that patch, not as proof that Sister of the Thorn is currently the strongest support option. Career balance has changed in later updates, so check the current patch notes before relying on any specific talent or effect.

Versions, platforms, and what changes over time
Career balance and talents have been changed across patches, so older notes should not be read as a current tier list. Fatshark’s console Quality of Life update identifies its own platform builds (PS4 Update 1.28 and Xbox Update 38). Those labels apply to those consoles, not to PC, so do not transfer them to another platform.

The official pages do not provide a current comprehensive ranking by difficulty, player skill, or team composition. Any claim that one career is best in every situation goes beyond what the official material supports.

A practical rule for choosing
- Pick the role first. Decide whether you want to deal damage at range, hold the front line, control enemies, or support. Ignore any career whose role you do not want to play, even if it is currently praised.
- Check what your team is missing. If nobody protects ranged players, be cautious with a pressure-sensitive ranged career. If nobody debuffs or controls, a support career may fill a real gap.
- Match the learning curve to your experience. Start with a forgiving career if you are new, and move to a high-ceiling pick once you are comfortable managing ability uptime and positioning.
- Verify before you buy or rely on balance claims. Confirm current availability on your platform’s storefront and check the most recent official patch notes, since both change.
- Choose weapons and talents that reinforce the role. Then play a few sessions and adjust. The career that fits on paper may still need tuning to your team’s habits.
