Gang Beasts is the best choice for co-op you can play now, especially if your group wants a physics brawl on one PC or online. Party Animals is the other buy-now animal-themed fighter, although the available evidence does not verify its local-player options. RATATA is the better design match for cooperative jobs—loading trucks, choosing a crew and surviving chaotic deliveries—but it is an unreleased, PC-only Steam game with no announced date or price. The comparison is therefore not a straight three-way genre contest: Gang Beasts and Party Animals are party fighters, while RATATA is a PvE-style co-op heist adventure.

The games share a search result and a taste for uncontrolled physics, but the moment-to-moment objective is different in each one. That distinction matters more than the animal costumes when you are choosing a co-op game.
RATATA is a cooperative crime-comedy, not a released brawler
The Kingsdom announced RATATA on 27 October 2026. Its Steam page is marked “Coming soon,” with no release date, no user reviews and no price. The official pitch is for one to four players online, or solo, as an indebted crew carrying out a toad Mafia Boss’s vague orders.

A job can involve stealing an item, loading it into a vehicle, moving it through hazards and delivering it without breaking the cargo, the truck or a teammate. The crew recruits animals, buys larger vehicles, dresses in an ’80s style, upgrades a garage hideout and pays down a debt. Guards, traps and “crazy granny squirrels” are listed hazards. Payday is divided between the Boss and the crew, so progression is tied to vehicles, the hideout and the shrinking debt.
The Kingsdom says each animal has its own size, strength, speed, abilities and driver’s-license status; a character suited to one job may be a liability on the next. That is a job-selection system, not a confirmed fighting roster. Examples of a bear and fox appearing in press coverage are editorial colour, not an official list of playable animals.
RATATA’s physics are there to complicate teamwork: players have to decide what “the thing” is, agree on a plan and then deal with whoever is driving. Press descriptions compare that loop with cooperative cooking and moving games as well as Gang Beasts. Those comparisons explain the appeal, but they do not turn RATATA into a shipped arena fighter.
Gang Beasts is the established physics party brawler
Gang Beasts, developed by Boneloaf with Rocket Science also credited on Steam, released on 12 December 2017. Its gelatinous characters fight in hazardous Beef City arenas, where grabs, punches and environmental hazards produce slapstick wins and losses.
Steam lists online PvP, shared/split-screen PvP, shared/split-screen play, Remote Play on Phone/Tablet/TV and Remote Play Together. Its gang mode lets friends fight the gangs of Beef City together, while the melee mode is built around fighting local and online opponents. In other words, it is primarily competitive, with a cooperative mode layered onto the same physics system.
Party Animals occupies the same shopping set, with thinner verified detail
Party Animals appears alongside Gang Beasts in SteamRecs’ similarity results and shares Party, Fighting, 3D Fighter, Party Game, Multiplayer, Funny and Casual tags. Those tags support calling it an animal-themed party fighter, not a cooperative delivery game.

Because the counts conflict, neither should be presented as a definitive current Steam total. No official maximum-player number, local-play flag, platform list or developer/publisher detail was verified for this comparison.

Which game is best for co-op tonight?
Choose Gang Beasts when “co-op” means a physics fight you can start immediately, including couch play with extra controllers. Choose Party Animals if you specifically want an animal-mascot party fighter and are comfortable checking the current store listing for your preferred multiplayer setup. Choose RATATA only as a wishlist candidate if your group wants cooperative objectives rather than player-versus-player rounds.
- One PC, several people on the sofa: Gang Beasts has the sourced split-screen feature set and Remote Play Together.
- Online slapstick competition: Gang Beasts is the documented option, with online PvP and a co-op gang mode.
- Animal-themed fighter already sold: Party Animals fits the tags and price range, but local-versus-online details require confirmation from its current official listing.
- Four-person PvE jobs: RATATA is the conceptual match, but it has not launched and its official page does not list shared or split-screen play.
The title “best physics brawler for co-op” hides two different decisions: whether you want a brawler at all, and whether you need the game to be available today. RATATA wins the first question only if your definition of co-op is a shared job with objectives, not a team fighting another team.
How do local and online modes differ?
Gang Beasts: the clearest couch-play choice
Gang Beasts’ Steam feature list explicitly includes shared/split-screen play and Remote Play Together. That makes it the safest pick for a living-room session on one PC, provided everyone has a controller or a suitable input device. Online PvP is also listed, and the gang mode gives friends a cooperative reason to enter Beef City together.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Steam does not print one single maximum-player integer in the about text used here, so do not rely on an invented cap when planning a lobby. The documented features are enough to establish local and online support, but not to promise a particular headcount beyond the modes Steam names.
Party Animals: multiplayer is supported, local details are not established here
Party Animals is tagged as multiplayer and as a party/fighting game in the same similarity set as Gang Beasts. The available material does not verify whether a specific edition supports split-screen, Remote Play Together or a particular local-player count. Check the current official store page before buying for a couch event; do not infer those features from the genre tags alone.
RATATA: online four-player co-op is confirmed; couch play is not
RATATA’s official wording says players can “play online with up to 4 friends, or go solo if nobody picks up the phone.” Steam flags Single-player and Co-op, along with Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, full controller support, Xbox and PlayStation controller support and the Steam Input API. Shared/Split Screen is not listed.
That omission does not prove local play will never arrive, but it means local co-op should not be advertised as a launch feature. Solo partner behavior is also unsettled: a press article mentions AI companions, while the official copy only says you can go solo. Treat AI teammates as unconfirmed until The Kingsdom documents them.

What does a typical session look like in each game?
Gang Beasts: grab, throw and survive the arena
The core loop is short competitive rounds. You customize a character, enter a melee arena, grab opponents and use the stage’s hazards to knock them out. The co-op gang mode changes the target to Beef City’s gangs, preserving the same loose, physical controls while giving a group a shared enemy.
The game’s long-running reception reflects that focused party format. Steam reported 85% positive from 26,215 English-language reviews and 86% positive from 513 reviews in the previous 30 days when checked in 2026, both marked Very Positive. SteamRecs separately reported an overall Very Positive total of 67.4K reviews; that larger figure aggregates a different pool and should not be collapsed into Steam’s English-language count.
Party Animals: a similar party-fighter proposition
Party Animals’ evidence supports a casual, funny, multiplayer 3D-fighting identity. It is the natural alternative for players who want animal characters and party combat rather than mission planning. The strongest published critic figures available here are a Metacritic Metascore of 76 and Userscore of 7.7, plus an OpenCritic average of 77 with 71% of critics recommending it, all reported by GG.deals in 2026.
Those scores describe aggregated critical reception, not a direct test of local co-op. They also do not settle whether its current multiplayer implementation suits your group, so use the official listing for the final mode check.
RATATA: coordinate a crew under a vague contract
RATATA’s intended session has more moving parts than a brawl. Players draft a crew, select an animal whose attributes fit the job, acquire or upgrade vehicles and attempt a theft, delivery or other Mafia assignment. The game’s comedy comes from physics and disagreement: one person interprets the Boss’s request, another loads the truck and someone else drives it into a trap.
Successful jobs pay the crew after the Boss takes most of the money. The remainder goes toward the crew, vehicles and garage hideout, while the debt falls “very slowly.” The loop promises persistent cooperative decisions, but no independent hands-on evidence or final review record exists because the game is not released.
What are the prices, platforms and PC requirements?
Gang Beasts and Party Animals are the buy-now products in this comparison. RATATA is a wishlist-only announcement, so there is no legitimate purchase price to compare yet.

How strong is the evidence behind each recommendation?
Gang Beasts has the most complete, directly verified feature and reception record here: a 2017 release, a $19.99 Steam list price, explicit local and online modes and a Very Positive Steam history. Its Steam page also reprints praise from Eurogamer, the Guardian Online and Rock, Paper, Shotgun, while listing a 2016 SXSW Gamer’s Voice Multiplayer Award and a 2015 EGX Indie Game of the Show award.
Party Animals has substantial reported popularity and mid-70s critic aggregates, but the available sources disagree on Steam review volume and do not establish its official local-player feature set. That makes it a reasonable alternative, not a fully documented substitute for Gang Beasts’ couch-play case.
RATATA has the clearest announced concept but the least certainty about the finished product. The Kingsdom has confirmed the four-player online/solo structure, crew attributes, jobs, vehicles and hideout progression; the studio has not confirmed a date, price, local co-op, console edition or final review quality. A wishlist is the appropriate action until those details arrive.
Should you buy, play or wishlist each game?
Buy Gang Beasts if your priority is immediate shared play
Buy Gang Beasts when your group wants a proven physics party game with documented split-screen, online play and a cooperative gang mode. Its $19.99 Steam list price and established review history make the purchase decision straightforward, with the caveat that its primary design remains PvP rather than mission-based co-op.
Buy Party Animals if the animal-fighter identity matters most
Party Animals is the alternative for players drawn to a mascot-focused party fighter. The reported Steam price is also $19.99, and aggregator data places it in the same fighting and party category as Gang Beasts. Verify the current official multiplayer and platform details before purchasing for local play, because those specifics are not established by the sources available here.
Wishlist RATATA if you want cooperative objectives
Wishlist RATATA rather than trying to buy it. It is PC-only on the announced information, has no date or price and does not list split-screen. Its promise is a different kind of chaos: four-player online jobs, vehicle logistics, crew specialization and a hideout that develops as the debt is repaid.

Is RATATA the same game as Ratatan?
No. RATATA is The Kingsdom’s announced animal-mafia co-op game. Ratatan is the separate Patapon spiritual successor from Ratata Arts that released shortly before RATATA’s announcement; the similar names refer to different projects.
How we picked
The ranking uses four practical criteria: whether the game is available now, whether co-op modes are directly documented, whether local play is verified, and whether the game’s core objective matches what the reader means by co-op. Those criteria put Gang Beasts first for a playable physics brawl, Party Animals second as the available animal-themed fighter, and RATATA in the wishlist position for future PvE job-based co-op.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does RATATA support cross-play between PC and consoles?
No cross-play arrangement has been announced. The confirmed platform is PC through Steam, and console editions are not listed in the available official or press information.
Can I play Gang Beasts without an internet connection?
The Steam feature list confirms shared/split-screen play, so a local session does not depend on an online lobby. Remote Play Together is also listed for friends joining remotely through Steam.
Why do Party Animals review totals differ between websites?
SteamRecs reports 79.0K reviews, while GG.deals reports Steam as Very Positive with 56.7K. They are different aggregator snapshots, so neither number should be treated as a universal current Steam total.
Will RATATA have a campaign or story mode?
The announced structure is a sequence of Mafia jobs tied to crew, vehicle and hideout progression. The available information does not confirm a conventional scripted campaign, chapter count or story length.
