The Uncensored Library is best for guided, country-focused learning about press freedom—not for exhaustive web searches. It presents selected censored journalism inside a Minecraft map or server. The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine is better for checking older versions of known websites; Tor Browser and onion services are access and privacy tools rather than archives; and Library of Congress web archives provide carefully selected institutional collections whose access rules vary. The Uncensored Library is a press-freedom project created by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) with BlockWorks. It turns a Minecraft building into a curated reading room for journalism and information that has been censored or restricted in the authors’ countries. The architecture is deliberately educational: visitors move through country-focused spaces, read books reproduced in the game and see how censorship affects reporters.
BlockWorks describes material connected to all 180 countries in the RSF Press Freedom Index, while the official Minecraft description says the build contains around 300 books arranged across 12 wings. Those figures describe the documented layout, not equal coverage of every country, language or event. A small selection can illustrate a censorship pattern without representing the complete record of a publication.

Because editors select and republish items, the library is not an automated crawl. It is strong at orientation: a reader can discover writers, understand a country’s press environment and follow a narrative path through an unfamiliar subject. It is weaker for exhaustive URL lookup, full-text search, date-by-date reconstruction or proving that a page looked a particular way at a particular time.
The project also has an advocacy purpose. Its message is that sharing suppressed reporting helps defend press freedom. Hatice Cengiz, fiancée of Jamal Khashoggi, expressed that purpose as: “We need to defend press freedom every day.” Yulia Berezovskaia, editor in chief of grani.ru, similarly said: “The only real way of fighting censorship is sharing and spreading what has been censored.” Treat those statements as attributed viewpoints, not as a claim that the collection is politically neutral.

How can you access The Uncensored Library?
You need compatible Minecraft software, a reliable copy of the project and a connection or local installation that your network permits. The documented routes are a live server and a downloadable map; current server address, uptime, supported edition and telemetry practices can change, so verify them from the project’s official instructions immediately before use.
- Choose the route. Use the live server for immediate, shared exploration. Use the downloadable map when you want a local copy, less dependence on one server and the possibility of offline browsing after installation.
- Confirm your Minecraft edition and version. The project’s instructions should identify whether the current map or server targets Java, Bedrock or a specific release. Do not assume a map built for one edition will load correctly in another.
- Obtain the map or server details from the project’s official channel. Check that the download has not been altered and keep the original file so you can verify it later if the publisher posts an update.
- For a map, import it through Minecraft’s world-management screen. Follow the edition-specific installation path, load the world locally and allow its assets to finish processing before exploring.
- For a server, add the supplied address in Multiplayer. Connection success depends on server availability, your edition, local network filtering and applicable law. A failed connection does not prove that the project has closed.
- Record what you read. Note the in-game wing, book title, author, publication date and any original outlet named in the text. A screenshot alone may not preserve enough bibliographic context for later citation.
Minecraft access can be strategically useful where conventional news or social platforms are blocked, because a game environment may remain reachable through a different technical path. Reachability is not a guarantee that every censorship regime will permit it, and it is not a promise of anonymity.
Is The Uncensored Library a real archive or only a Minecraft project?

Its Minecraft format changes what “search” means. You can browse rooms and books and follow the curators’ country-based organization, yet you should not expect a complete index of every censored article or a machine-readable catalogue of all original URLs. For a research paper, capture the book’s metadata and then locate an independent copy or catalogue record when possible.

Use the Wayback Machine when you know a website, page or URL and need to inspect earlier versions, vanished wording or changes in site structure. Its date-based browsing is designed for historical comparison rather than guided political education.
The Internet Archive warns that it does not collect every site. Gaps arise when pages were never crawled, access was blocked, a publisher requested removal, robots exclusions limited capture, or interactive elements depended on scripts and external services. A saved page may also lose images, stylesheets, search functions or embedded media. Treat a capture as evidence of what the archive received, not proof that the entire original site existed exactly as rendered.
For a defensible citation, save the capture URL, capture date, page URL and the date you accessed it. Quote the archived text with enough surrounding context to show whether it is an article, homepage, profile or navigation page. If a page is missing, try the site’s parent path, linked assets and nearby capture dates rather than assuming the content never existed.
What does Tor add—and what does it not add?
Tor Browser is an access layer. It routes traffic through the Tor network to reduce the visibility of your location and local observer, and onion services let a site operate within Tor so visitors do not have to leave the network to reach it. Neither function preserves pages, supplies historical versions or verifies that a source is accurate.

Tor’s published privacy principles describe no tracking, no telemetry and no identity linkage as design goals. Tor Browser does not collect IP addresses, browsing history, device identifiers or location by default, but privacy still depends on the operating system, downloads, account logins, browser settings and behavior. Opening a personal account, reusing identifying details or saving files to a shared device can connect activity to you even when the network path is protected.
Onion access can reduce exposure associated with reaching a conventional site, and RSF identifies Tor onion services alongside the Internet Archive as anti-censorship tools. That does not make an onion publication trustworthy, remove endpoint malware risks or ensure that every connection is anonymous. Check authorship, corroborate important claims and keep downloaded documents in a controlled environment.
When should you use Library of Congress web archives?
Choose Library of Congress web archives when expert selection, collection notes and institutional context matter more than universal public access. Subject specialists assemble collections around events, organizations or themes, which can make the provenance and scope clearer than an undifferentiated web crawl.
Access is collection-specific. Some material is openly viewable online; other collections may deny off-site access or require on-site research or a special arrangement. Read the collection’s rights and access statement before planning a project around it, and record the collection title and description with each item so another researcher can understand the selection context.
Which option is best for censored news?
There is no single winner because the systems solve different problems. Match the tool to the task and use more than one when your project requires both discovery and verification.

- Cite precisely. Record the archive or collection name, original publisher, item title, capture or publication date, access route and any limits such as missing media or restricted viewing.
What privacy risks remain across these archives?
Privacy has two sides: the trail created while you access material and the information contained in the material itself. A Minecraft session can expose account, device, network and behavioral metadata through the surrounding platform and local network; the project does not publish a separate guarantee of anonymity.
The Wayback Machine is publicly searchable, and its documentation notes that archived pages can contain personal information. Researchers should avoid redistributing sensitive data merely because it is preserved, and should distinguish a public capture from permission to republish its contents.

Can I read the library without buying Minecraft?
The documented experience runs inside Minecraft or through a downloadable Minecraft map, so a compatible Minecraft installation is normally required.
