PETG is the best default filament for most rigid, functional guitar-controller accessories. It gives strum bars, mounting blocks, brackets, adapters, and replacement covers a better balance of toughness, layer adhesion, and heat tolerance than PLA, without the demanding printer conditions associated with ABS-class materials. Choose PLA for easy-to-print cosmetic parts, faceplates, or cool-running prototypes. Choose TPU or another flexible filament only when the part must bend, grip, cushion, or seal. The right choice still depends on the part’s geometry, load, temperature, and fit: wall thickness, perimeters, print orientation, and a test fit can matter as much as the polymer.

What filament is best for a 3D-printed guitar controller accessory?

For a rigid accessory that will be handled repeatedly, start with PETG. It is suited to mechanical parts, is less brittle than PLA under shock, and has a larger heat margin than PLA. Those traits make it a sensible choice for a Guitar Hero-style strum bar, a Clone Hero mounting block, an adapter, a bracket, or a replacement cover.

PETG is not automatically the strongest choice for every design. A thin, poorly oriented PETG part can fail while a thick, well-oriented PLA part survives. Treat the material recommendation as a starting point, then validate the actual model with a small test print and a test fit before committing to a full accessory.

Quick decision rule

  • Rigid, repeatedly handled part: PETG.
  • Cosmetic shell, faceplate, or low-cost prototype that stays cool: PLA.
  • Grip, sleeve, bumper, or grommet that must flex: TPU/Flex.
  • High-heat or outdoor exposure: ABS or ASA, with nylon or PC considered only when your printer and process support them.
  • Tiny switch keycap or plunger: use resin when the controller design specifies it rather than forcing the geometry into ordinary FDM filament.

How do PETG and PLA compare for controller parts?

PETG and PLA can both produce useful controller accessories, but they fail in different ways. PETG is generally the safer functional default; PLA is usually the easier cosmetic and prototyping material.

Property PETG PLA What it means for a guitar controller
Impact behavior More flexible and less brittle than PLA Easy to print but can be brittle under shock Choose PETG for repeated hits, drops, or force on a strum bar or bracket.
Heat margin Higher than PLA Lower PETG is safer near warm electronics, direct sun, or a hot room; neither should be treated as a high-temperature engineering plastic.
Print difficulty Requires tuning for stringing, retraction, bed adhesion, and fit Usually the simplest starting point PLA is useful for proving dimensions before the final PETG print.
Layer adhesion Good when printed with a suitable profile Can be adequate, but shock and brittle failure are concerns For either material, orient layers and add perimeters so the load is not concentrated along one weak seam.
Detail and finish Functional finish; may show more stringing Sharp cosmetic detail and broad color availability Use PLA when appearance matters more than impact margin.
Fit sensitivity Needs careful tolerance and cooling control Often easier for a first dimensional trial Print a small mating feature before producing the complete accessory.

FIRST Tech Challenge describes PLA as easy to print but notes its brittleness under shock. The same guide describes PETG as a common material that some users consider an upgrade to PLA because it is more flexible, less brittle, and more heat resistant. That is a practical distinction for controller hardware, where a part may be struck, squeezed, or dropped rather than loaded once in a laboratory test.

Which guitar-controller parts should be printed in PETG?

Use PETG for parts whose job is to hold position, transfer force, or survive repeated handling. Byte Arts’ StrumFix documentation explicitly lists PLA or PETG for strum bars, adapters, and mounting blocks; PETG is the more forgiving choice when those parts will see shock or flex at their joints.

Strum bars

A strum bar experiences repeated hand impacts and can transmit force into pivots, switch actuators, or mounting points. PETG’s lower brittleness makes it a strong default. Design the bar with generous perimeters and avoid a narrow feature whose only load path runs through one layer boundary. Print a short section containing the pivot or switch interface first, then check movement and clearance before printing the full bar.

Mounting blocks and brackets

Mounts need dimensional accuracy as well as toughness. PETG can handle routine handling better than a brittle PLA mount, but its fit must be tuned: measure the mating controller, print a small interface coupon, and adjust clearances before making a large block. A bracket with thin arms may still crack regardless of polymer, so increase wall thickness or add a fillet where the arm meets the body.

Adapters and replacement covers

Adapters often combine screw holes, clips, and thin edges. PETG gives those features a useful impact margin, while the higher heat tolerance helps if the controller is stored in a warm room or near sunlight. For a purely cosmetic cover that carries little load, PLA remains reasonable and may produce cleaner detail.

When is PLA the better choice?

PLA is the right choice when print simplicity, sharp detail, appearance, or a cheap dimensional prototype matters more than maximum impact and heat margin. It is suitable for a faceplate, decorative shell, button surround, or early fit-check model that will remain indoors and cool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use thin PLA features as a substitute for a resilient structural design. A clip that must flex repeatedly, a strum bar that is struck hard, or a mount exposed to drops can fail by brittle fracture. If a PLA prototype fits perfectly, reprint the final functional version in PETG when the part will see repeated shock or elevated temperatures.

Situations that favor PLA

  • You are validating dimensions before spending more time tuning a functional material.
  • The accessory is mostly cosmetic and has thick, uncomplicated walls.
  • You need crisp lettering, sharp edges, or a finish that is easier to achieve on your printer with PLA.
  • The part will stay away from hot cars, radiators, direct sun, and other warm locations.

Can TPU print grips, sleeves, and bumpers?

Yes. TPU or another Flex filament is appropriate when compliance is the feature: a hand grip, rubber-like sleeve, bumper, vibration pad, or grommet. Prusa’s guitar-accessories example demonstrates a flexible filament used for a rubber sleeve.

TPU is not a replacement for a rigid strum bar, mounting block, or load-bearing bracket. A soft part can deform, change the switch travel, or allow a mount to move. Use it as a contact layer around a rigid core, or as a standalone component only when the design specifically needs bending or cushioning.

TPU printing checks

  • Print slowly enough for the filament to feed consistently and for corners to remain accurate.
  • Check that the filament path does not allow the soft strand to buckle or escape the drive gears.
  • Test the actual grip or sleeve on a scrap section first; flexible materials can change how a part seats and can make a nominally correct dimension feel too tight.
  • Keep a rigid backup design for any feature that must hold a switch, screw, or controller shell in a fixed position.

Do I need ABS, ASA, nylon, or PC?

Usually not. ABS and ASA can offer greater temperature capability, and nylon or PC may be appropriate for demanding environments, but Prusa’s material guide places these materials in a more demanding category than PETG. They generally require more controlled temperature conditions, hardware, and process discipline.

Material family Use it when Trade-offs for controller accessories
ABS The part will face more heat than PLA or PETG can reasonably tolerate and your printer is set up for it. More demanding temperature control, enclosure, ventilation, and warping management.
ASA Outdoor exposure or ultraviolet resistance is important. Similar process demands to ABS; unnecessary for an ordinary indoor controller.
Nylon You need an engineering plastic and can control drying and printing conditions. More demanding moisture and process management; use only when the design justifies it.
PC A high-temperature, high-performance application warrants it and the printer supports the material. Requires capable hardware and tight process control; excessive for most guitar-controller parts.

If the accessory will live in an ordinary room and is not exposed to sustained heat, PETG normally avoids the extra complexity. Move to ABS, ASA, nylon, or PC for a specific environmental reason, not because a harder-sounding material automatically improves a small controller part.

How should filament choice change the design?

Material cannot compensate for a weak load path. Geometry, print orientation, wall thickness, and perimeter count can matter as much as the polymer.

Orient the layers for the actual load

Inspect where the strum force, screw tension, or clip flex will act. Avoid placing the critical joint so that the load tries to peel one layer from the next. Rotate the part, split it into pieces, or add a mechanical fastener when that produces a stronger load path.

Use walls and perimeters deliberately

For a bracket or mount, a thicker shell with adequate perimeters is usually more useful than relying on a large amount of infill inside a thin skin. Reinforce screw bosses and the roots of arms or hooks. On a strum bar, strengthen the pivot and switch-contact regions rather than making every dimension larger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect snap fits and clips

Snap features need controlled flex and enough clearance. PLA’s brittleness makes a repeatedly flexed clip a poor candidate; PETG is more forgiving, while TPU may be too compliant to retain the controller securely. Print one clip segment, check insertion force, and revise the clearance before producing the complete model.

What is the best print workflow for a PETG controller accessory?

A short, staged workflow reduces failed large prints and catches fit problems while they are cheap to fix.

  1. Identify the load and environment. Decide whether the part is structural, cosmetic, flexible, or exposed to heat, sunlight, impacts, or repeated clipping.
  2. Select the initial filament. Start with PETG for rigid functional parts, PLA for cool cosmetic or prototype parts, and TPU/Flex for compliant surfaces.
  3. Check the model’s material specification. Follow the controller design’s instructions. If it specifies resin for a tiny switch keycap or plunger, do not assume an FDM filament can reproduce the same small geometry reliably.
  4. Prepare the printer profile. Use the filament manufacturer’s profile as a baseline, then tune retraction, cooling, bed adhesion, and dimensional fit for your machine. PETG commonly needs stringing and travel tuning; TPU needs a controlled, slow feed.
  5. Print a fit coupon. Include the actual hole, clip, pivot, or mating edge. A small test reveals shrinkage, elephant-foot effects, over-tight clearances, and stringing without consuming a full spool of material.
  6. Adjust orientation and reinforcement. Move layer boundaries away from the highest-stress line, add perimeters or wall thickness at joints, and split the part if that creates a better load path.
  7. Print the complete accessory. Keep the same profile and orientation that passed the coupon. Inspect the first layers and critical interfaces as the print progresses.
  8. Test without force. Fit the accessory to an unplugged controller, check switch travel and cable clearance, and remove material rather than forcing a tight joint.
  9. Run a gentle functional test. Exercise the strum bar, clip, or mount gradually. Look for layer-line cracks, creep, rubbing, and loosening before normal play.

How do heat, storage, and surface finish affect the choice?

Heat exposure is one of the clearest reasons to prefer PETG over PLA, but neither should be treated as a universal heat-proof solution. A controller left in a hot car or in direct sun can exceed the conditions under which a simple indoor accessory was designed. For sustained high heat or outdoor exposure, consider ABS or ASA only if your printer, enclosure, ventilation, and profile control are suitable.

Surface finish can hide a structural problem. Prusa’s February 4, 2022 guitar-accessories article reports that a shiny Silk PLA wall mount failed along a layer line, while the article’s other tested filaments did not show that failure. The explanation given is that the additives that create the shiny appearance also reduce layer adhesion. For a load-bearing mount, choose a formulation with dependable adhesion over a decorative effect, and inspect the layer direction rather than judging strength by the surface alone.

What common failures should you troubleshoot first?

Symptom Likely cause First corrective action
Strings between posts or around the strum interface Retraction, travel, temperature, or profile is not tuned for PETG. Calibrate retraction and travel behavior with a small test, then clean strings before evaluating fit.
Mount does not seat Clearance, first-layer expansion, or dimensional scaling is wrong. Measure the mating feature, print a coupon, and revise the clearance instead of forcing the part.
Clip snaps during installation Thin geometry, poor layer orientation, or a brittle material such as PLA. Use PETG, thicken the root, round the transition, and orient layers to support the flex.
Soft grip slips or changes switch travel TPU is being used where a rigid locating feature is required. Keep TPU on the contact surface and add a rigid core or stop.
Wall mount cracks along one line Stress is concentrated at a layer boundary; shiny additives may also reduce adhesion. Change orientation, add perimeters or a fillet, and avoid decorative Silk PLA for the structural version.
Large ABS, ASA, nylon, or PC print warps The printer lacks the required temperature control, enclosure, drying, or profile. Return to PETG for an indoor part or upgrade the process before selecting the higher-demand material.

What should you use for tiny fret buttons and switch plungers?

Small switch keycaps and plungers are a special case. Byte Arts’ StrumFix documentation specifies resin parts for those tiny components rather than ordinary FDM filament. That specification reflects the difficulty of reproducing very small, precise geometry with a standard filament process.

Do not generalize that recommendation to every accessory. A resin requirement for a tiny actuator does not mean the entire controller mount or strum bar should be resin; select the material for each part’s size, load, and required flexibility.

Which filament should you buy for a first project?

For a first functional accessory, buy PETG in the diameter your printer uses, commonly 1.75 mm, and use a profile intended for that specific machine. Keep a small amount of PLA available for dimension checks and cosmetic prototypes. Add TPU 95A only if the design includes a grip, sleeve, bumper, or grommet that must flex.

Material diameter alone does not guarantee a successful part. Confirm the printer’s supported diameter, nozzle and build-surface compatibility, and the model’s material instructions. If you use a customer-directed print service instead of printing at home, verify its available material menu, geography, current pricing, and the model’s licensing terms before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I reduce PETG stringing on a guitar-controller part?

Start with the filament maker’s PETG profile, then tune retraction and travel moves on a small test piece. Keep the profile that gives clean switch openings and mating edges, not merely the one with the fewest visible hairs.

Should the layer lines run along the length of a strum bar?

Orient the bar so the main hand force does not try to separate layers at the pivot or switch interface. Because the best direction depends on the model, print a short section containing the loaded joint and inspect it before committing to the full part.

Is shiny Silk PLA suitable for a controller wall mount?

It is a risky choice for a structural mount. A Prusa guitar-accessories example documented failure along a layer line and attributed it to shiny additives reducing layer adhesion; use a dependable structural filament and validate the orientation instead.

Can a PLA-only printer make a usable controller accessory?

Yes, especially for a cosmetic cover, faceplate, or cool-running prototype with thick, simple walls. For a repeatedly struck or flexed part, redesign the geometry and consider having the final version printed in PETG rather than relying on brittle PLA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I choose a resin print instead of filament?

Use resin when the controller design specifically calls for very small, high-resolution pieces such as a switch keycap or plunger. Keep larger structural accessories in a filament process unless the design and service explicitly require resin.
