For the modern story, buy Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade first and then Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Intergrade contains the first remake game and the Yuffie episode, while Rebirth is the second installment. If you want the complete 1997 adventure in one purchase, choose the original Final Fantasy VII. The third remake game, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is scheduled for April 8, 2027, so it is currently a preorder rather than a released game. Your best choice depends on whether you value the original’s complete story, the modern three-game retelling, physical ownership, portability, or waiting for the trilogy package.

Which Final Fantasy VII game should I buy first?
Choose according to the story you want, not simply the newest release. The original is a self-contained game; the remake project is a substantially expanded retelling divided across three releases.

Buy the original if you want a complete adventure now
The original Final Fantasy VII tells its full 1997 story in one game. It is not a “complete edition” of the remake project, and the remake’s first installment is not the original game in full. The upgraded PC edition keeps the original story while adding optional quality-of-life controls: 3× game speed, the ability to turn encounters off, and battle assists. Those options can make a first playthrough less demanding without changing the underlying campaign. See the current Steam listing for the edition’s feature description: Steam’s Final Fantasy VII page.
Buy Intergrade, then Rebirth, for the modern story order
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the normal entry point for the modern retelling. It bundles Remake with FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, the Yuffie-led side story. Continue with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second installment. The third game, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, has not launched; Square Enix announced an April 8, 2027 release date.

Buy Rebirth alone only when you accept a recap-first start
Rebirth is officially described as a standalone game and includes a recap for newcomers. That makes it playable without owning Remake, but first-time players seeking the intended narrative progression should still start with Intergrade. Rebirth’s standalone status means access is not locked behind a Remake save file; it does not turn the three-game retelling into a finished single purchase.
What is the difference between the original FFVII and the remake project?
The original is one complete game. The modern project retells and expands that story over three separate games, so “Remake” should not be read as the entire 1997 experience.

Original FFVII: complete story, older presentation
The original gives you the whole campaign in one purchase and remains the only option here that is complete as a single game. Square Enix reported more than 15.7 million copies sold worldwide for the original in its September 2026 announcement; that figure is for the original game, not Rebirth or the remake trilogy. The PC edition’s optional speed, encounter and battle assists are useful if you want the original narrative with less grinding.
Remake series: expanded retelling in three releases
Remake covers the first portion of the retelling, Intergrade adds the Yuffie episode, and Rebirth continues the story as the second installment. Revelation is planned as the third game but remains unreleased. Therefore, buying only Remake does not give you the full remake narrative, while buying the original does not grant access to the modern reinterpretation.
Does Intergrade include the Yuffie DLC?
Yes. Intergrade includes FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, the Yuffie episode. The older PS4 Remake listing is a different product and should not be assumed to contain INTERmission.
What Intergrade contains
- The first modern remake game, Final Fantasy VII Remake.
- FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, a separate Yuffie-focused episode.
- The Intergrade presentation and platform-specific features offered by the edition.
Square Enix lists Intergrade for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, with Xbox Play Anywhere support and Xbox-on-PC availability for the 2026 releases. The publisher’s Switch 2 announcement is available at Square Enix’s Intergrade announcement.
What a PS4 owner should not assume
A qualifying PS4 digital owner can receive the PS5 Remake upgrade under the terms shown on the PlayStation listing. A PS4 disc owner needs a PS5 with a disc drive and must insert the disc to use the upgrade. The upgrade alone should not be described as an INTERmission entitlement; PlayStation states that the episode requires the PS5 game and qualifying owners can purchase it separately. Check the account and product eligibility before buying another copy at the PlayStation Store listing.

Can I start with Rebirth?
Yes, but it is better understood as a second-game experience. Square Enix calls Rebirth “a standalone game that welcomes fans and newcomers alike” and provides an in-game recap. Starting with Intergrade remains the clearer choice if you want character introductions and story events in release order.
What you miss by skipping Intergrade
Rebirth can explain the earlier events, but a recap is not the same as playing the first installment and Yuffie’s episode. You will encounter characters, relationships and consequences whose context was developed in Intergrade. If you begin with Rebirth because it is the only version available on your device, use its recap, then consider returning to Intergrade before moving on to Revelation.
Do earlier saves unlock content?
Earlier Remake or INTERmission saves can qualify for specified Rebirth summon bonuses under Square Enix’s PS5 and PC conditions. These are bonuses, not full progression transfers: do not expect characters, equipment or campaign progress to carry over. Square Enix has also announced specified Revelation bonuses tied to earlier-game save data on the console or PC account used.
Read the publisher’s platform and save-data details on the official Rebirth page.
Is FF7 Rebirth on Xbox or Switch 2 now?
Yes. As of October 2026, both released remake games are listed for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox-on-PC and Xbox Play Anywhere support are confirmed for the 2026 releases.
| Platform | Intergrade | Rebirth | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Available | Available | Physical Twin Pack is a PS5 product |
| PC | Available | Available | Rebirth requires a 155 GB SSD according to Square Enix |
| Switch 2 | Available | Available | Nintendo lists 90.4 GB for Intergrade and 91.5 GB for Rebirth |
| Xbox Series X|S | Available | Available | Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox-on-PC support are confirmed for the 2026 releases |
Do not rely on older guides saying Rebirth is PS5-only or that Xbox and Switch 2 versions are still pending. The current platform announcements supersede those earlier availability claims.
Should I buy the physical Twin Pack or individual games?
The PS5 physical Remake Intergrade & Rebirth Twin Pack is the simplest physical route to both released remake games and INTERmission. Square Enix’s direct listing showed “from $59.99” but also marked the package as currently unavailable when checked, so that amount is not a promise of current retailer stock or price.

What the Twin Pack includes
- Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
- FF7R EPISODE INTERmission through the Intergrade package.
It is a two-game package, not the complete trilogy. Revelation is not included because it is a separate upcoming release. Verify the seller, region, stock status and edition contents before paying, using the Square Enix Twin Pack listing as the product reference.
When individual copies make more sense
Buy individual digital or physical editions when you already own one game, need a different platform, or want to wait for a sale. A physical Deluxe edition can be worthwhile for collectors, but it does not add required story chapters beyond the included game and any explicitly listed episode.
Is the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy complete?
No. Two games are released; the third is scheduled, not available. Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII Revelation for April 8, 2027, on physical and digital formats. Treat that date as an announced schedule subject to change.
What the announced trilogy preorder offers
Square Enix’s September 2026 announcement listed a digital Remake Series Trilogy Edition preorder at $84.99 with immediate access to Intergrade and Rebirth. The announcement said digital trilogy preorders were available for PS5, Xbox and PC at that time, while Switch 2 digital preorders would open later. The $84.99 figure is the announced price, not a guarantee that every store’s checkout price remains the same.

Physical and digital editions are not identical
Revelation’s announced physical editions include Standard, Deluxe and a publisher-exclusive Collector’s edition. The physical Deluxe edition is described as including a soundtrack, art book and SteelBook. Digital Premium editions instead emphasize digital benefits such as a future Story Expansion Pass. Those extras are optional; none is required to understand the story.
What storage and performance details matter by platform?
Storage requirements are most concrete on PC and Switch 2. Performance claims should be read as platform documentation, not as a guarantee for every hardware setup.

PC requirements for Rebirth
Square Enix’s product FAQ specifies a 155 GB SSD requirement for PC Rebirth. The same page documents graphics options and support for up to 120 frames per second on sufficiently capable systems, plus enhancements for PS5 Pro. “Up to 120 FPS” is a supported option, not a promise that every PC will sustain it in every scene. Consult Square Enix’s Rebirth specifications before installing.

What the future Switch 2 Revelation card means
Square Enix says the future Switch 2 physical Revelation release will use a Game-Key Card. It requires a first-launch download and at least 130 GB of free space. That disclosure applies specifically to Revelation; it should not be generalized to every Switch 2 Final Fantasy VII physical release.

Extras are collector decisions, not access requirements. Choose a standard edition unless you specifically want physical memorabilia or announced digital add-ons.
Rebirth physical Deluxe and Collector’s editions
The PS5 physical Rebirth Deluxe edition includes an art book, mini soundtrack and SteelBook. The Square Enix Store-exclusive Collector’s edition adds a Sephiroth collectible and specified digital items. These products do not replace the need to own the game itself, and availability can change.
Revelation physical Deluxe and digital Premium editions
Revelation’s announced physical Deluxe package likewise includes a soundtrack, art book and SteelBook. Digital Premium editions focus on benefits such as a future Story Expansion Pass. Read each store’s exact contents because physical and digital bundles are not interchangeable.

The January 2026 Intergrade digital early-purchase offer for the original game ended January 31, 2026. On Square Enix’s Switch 2 physical store page, the booster-containing Day One Edition is sold out; the regular Standard Edition does not include that booster pack. Do not assume an unspecified current listing includes either bonus.

Do I need Crisis Core before playing Final Fantasy VII?
No. Crisis Core –Final Fantasy VII– Reunion is an HD-remastered prequel and an optional follow-up, not part one of the remake, not part three, and not a substitute for the original game.
If you buy it on Switch, identify the exact version. Nintendo says the Switch version has no planned Switch-to-Switch 2 upgrade pack and that Switch and Switch 2 saves are incompatible. Treat it as extra background after choosing your main Final Fantasy VII route, not as a prerequisite.

How do I choose the right purchase route?
Use this sequence to avoid buying an edition that does not match your story goal or platform.
- Decide whether one complete game matters most. Choose the original if you want the entire 1997 narrative in one purchase. Choose the remake route if you want the modern, expanded retelling and accept that its third game is still forthcoming.
- Pick your starting point. Start with Intergrade for story order and Yuffie’s episode. Start with Rebirth only if you accept its recap-first structure or cannot access Intergrade on your chosen device.
- Match the platform. Both released remake games now have PS5, PC, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Check the exact storefront edition rather than relying on older platform lists.
- Choose physical or digital ownership. The PS5 Twin Pack is the named two-game physical option, but Square Enix’s listing was unavailable when checked. Digital buyers should compare current store prices and preorder terms.
- Check storage before checkout. Leave room for the documented 155 GB PC SSD requirement for Rebirth, Nintendo’s 90.4 GB and 91.5 GB Switch 2 listings, or the future 130 GB Revelation Game-Key Card download.
- Verify upgrade and save eligibility. PS4 owners should check whether their digital or disc copy qualifies for the PS5 upgrade and remember that INTERmission may require a separate purchase. Earlier saves can unlock specified summons or bonuses, not full progression.
- Pay for extras only if you want them. Art books, soundtracks, SteelBooks, collectibles and future digital passes add merchandise or bonus content; they are not required story access.
How we picked these recommendations
The ranking follows the distinctions that matter to a buyer: whether the story is complete, the intended narrative order, the contents of each named edition, current platform availability, physical-versus-digital ownership, storage requirements, upgrade and save conditions, and whether a release is available or merely announced. Prices and stock are treated as date-sensitive; the announced $84.99 trilogy preorder and the Twin Pack’s “from $59.99” listing should be rechecked at checkout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Revelation be included if I buy the original Final Fantasy VII?
No. The original is a separate, complete 1997 game, while Revelation belongs to the modern three-game remake project. Owning the original does not grant a Revelation license or a purchase credit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does the PS5 Twin Pack include the Yuffie episode?
Yes. The named physical Twin Pack includes Intergrade, and Intergrade includes FF7R EPISODE INTERmission. It is still a two-game package and does not include the unreleased third game.
Can I move my Remake character progress into Rebirth?
No full campaign or character-progression transfer is described. Eligible Remake or INTERmission saves can unlock specified Rebirth summon bonuses, so keep the save on the same qualifying console or PC account.
What happens if my Switch 2 has less than 130 GB free for Revelation?
The announced Switch 2 physical Revelation release uses a Game-Key Card and requires a first-launch download. You would need to free space or use compatible expanded storage before the download can complete.
