Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres each have a different type, ability, and signature move, so the right choice depends on what your team lacks in battle. The official Pokémon pages document those differences but do not rank the three, and no official source names a strongest bird.
What these birds are
Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres are Galarian regional variants tied to the Crown Tundra story. They are distinct forms, not the same Pokémon as the original Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, and the official regional-form overview describes them that way. Any comparison should treat them as three separate picks, each with its own move set.
How the three compare on paper
The official species pages give each bird one type pairing, one ability, and one signature move. The table below lists those documented values.
| Bird | Type | Ability | Signature move | Move category and effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galarian Articuno | Psychic/Flying | Competitive | Freezing Glare | Psychic special move; may freeze the target |
| Galarian Zapdos | Fighting/Flying | Defiant | Thunderous Kick | Fighting physical move; lowers the target’s Defense |
| Galarian Moltres | Dark/Flying | Berserk | Fiery Wrath | Dark special move; may cause the target to flinch |
These values describe documented mechanics only. They do not establish which bird performs best in any matchup or format.

What each bird brings to battle
Galarian Articuno: special Psychic damage with a freeze chance
The official Galarian Articuno page describes its signature move this way: “Freezing Glare is a Psychic-type special move in which the Pokémon attacks by firing psychic power from both eyes.” Because it is a special move, its damage relies on the target’s Special Defense rather than Defense. The move’s freeze effect is the main reason to pick this bird over the other two, since neither of the others has a freeze effect on its signature move.
Galarian Zapdos: physical Fighting pressure and Defense reduction
The official Galarian Zapdos page says: “In this Fighting-type physical move, the Pokémon overwhelms the target with lightning-like movement before delivering a kick.” Thunderous Kick is physical, so it uses the attacker’s Attack stat and the target’s Defense. Its secondary effect lowers the target’s Defense, which can make later physical attacks on that target hit harder. Zapdos fits a team that needs physical pressure and a way to weaken physical walls.

Galarian Moltres: special Dark damage with a flinch chance
The official Galarian Moltres page describes Fiery Wrath as follows: “In this Dark-type special move, the Pokémon transforms its wrath into a fire-like aura to attack.” Like Freezing Glare, it is a special move. Its flinch chance can stop a target from moving on the turn it lands, which matters most when the flinch lands before the target acts. Moltres suits a team that wants special Dark damage and a disruptive effect, but a flinch is not guaranteed, so it works best as a bonus rather than a plan.

- Your team has few physical attackers: Galarian Zapdos adds physical Fighting damage and can lower the Defense of targets it hits.
- Your team needs special damage and a freeze chance: Galarian Articuno fits, since its signature move is the only one of the three with a freeze effect.
- Your team needs special damage and a flinch chance: Galarian Moltres fits, though the flinch is probabilistic.
- Your team already has several special attackers: Galarian Zapdos may add more variety than a second special attacker would.
All three are Flying types, so they share Flying’s weaknesses to Electric, Ice, and Rock. If your team already struggles against those types, factor that in before choosing.
Where to catch them in Sword and Shield
The Serebii Sword and Shield legendary guide describes a shared start and then separate routes. All three are first seen at the Dyna Tree during the story event “A Legendary Tree of A Legendary Three,” after which the birds scatter. The guide lists each encounter at level 70.

The official pages settle each bird’s type, ability, and signature move. They do not provide competitive usage, win rates, or a stat comparison among the three, and this article does not offer a ranking. A “strongest” answer depends on the generation, ruleset, team, and date you are playing under. To get a meaningful ranking, define those conditions first and then look at format-specific usage or tournament results for them.

Collecting the trio as trading cards
The official Pokémon Trading Card Game checklist for the Sword & Shield—Chilling Reign set lists Galarian Articuno V, Galarian Zapdos V, and Galarian Moltres V. These cards are a collectible reference only. They are not needed to play the birds in the games, and owning them does not change in-game performance.
