Sony’s Isabelle Tomatis said the company raised PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal prices globally because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” That change is why older buying guides may show lower PS5 figures.
What you get from each platform
Nintendo Switch 2: one system for the sofa and the road
Switch 2 is the clearest choice when the same console must serve as a handheld and a TV system. Nintendo describes it as the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go, building on eight years of Switch play. That flexibility is useful for commuters, households sharing a television and local multiplayer sessions where players bring the system to another room.
The $449.99 system includes 256 GB of storage and supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Compatibility is not a promise that every older title behaves identically, so check a specific game when an older purchase is central to your decision. New Switch 2 software includes Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, while Nintendo’s established strengths remain Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, Donkey Kong and family-focused local multiplayer.
The $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle can be better value than buying the game separately, but compare the bundle’s actual contents and retailer availability. PS5 Pro costs $899.99 at Sony’s April 2, 2026 recommended price. It is the choice for buyers who place more value on enhanced graphics and performance than on minimizing the initial outlay. A Pro purchase makes less sense if you play on a basic display, mostly play older games or would rather spend the difference on several games and a multiplayer subscription.

The PS5 library is the deciding factor for many buyers: choose it when the Sony releases and ecosystem you want are not available, or are less convenient, elsewhere. PlayStation Plus adds online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts and tiered catalogs. Sony says the Extra and Premium tiers include hundreds of downloadable games, while Premium also offers classics, trials and cloud streaming where supported. Catalog contents and prices change, so evaluate the games currently listed in your region rather than treating the tier as a permanent lineup.

Xbox Series X|S is strongest for players who value access to a large subscription catalog, backward compatibility and flexibility across devices. Xbox describes Series S as the lowest-cost way to access current Xbox hits. Series X is the higher-performance option; Series S is the smaller, budget-oriented model. Game Pass is Microsoft’s subscription catalog. Switch 2 GameChat was free during Nintendo’s open-access period through the end of March 2026. After that period, Nintendo Switch Online is required, so a Switch 2 owner buying in October 2026 should budget for the service if GameChat is important.

Expansion Pack members receive Nintendo GameCube Classics on Switch 2. Nintendo’s launch examples include F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and SOULCALIBUR II. Select the Expansion Pack for that retro catalog, not merely because it is the highest tier.
PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus includes online multiplayer, monthly games and discounts, with higher tiers adding larger downloadable catalogs. Sony describes Extra and Premium as offering hundreds of games; Premium also adds classics, game trials and cloud streaming on eligible plans. Because Sony can change both prices and catalog contents, open the PlayStation Plus page for your country and compare the current annual and monthly options before calculating a first-year total.
For a buyer who plays one or two purchased online games, the least expensive tier that enables multiplayer may be sufficient. For someone who rotates through many games, a higher tier can reduce individual purchases, but only if the games you want are currently included and you can finish them before they leave.
Xbox Game Pass
Game Pass should be evaluated as a catalog and access model rather than a single fixed product. Check the current plan table for console multiplayer, day-one availability, cloud or PC access, download limits and the games included in your region. Microsoft’s official page is the source for current plan names and prices; the figures are volatile and are not stated here as a permanent amount.
A subscription is valuable when it replaces several purchases you would otherwise make. It is less attractive if you play a small number of games for years, because continued access depends on the subscription and a title remaining in the catalog. Buying a favorite game outright can be the better long-term ownership choice.
Transparent first-year cost examples
No independent study establishes one universal cheapest console. The following examples use the confirmed hardware and Nintendo service prices only; they deliberately leave PlayStation Plus, Xbox hardware and Game Pass as “verify current price” items rather than inventing comparable figures.

These totals exclude games, a second controller, a headset, storage expansion, taxes and retailer promotions. They also show why a low hardware price is not automatically the lowest cost: a player who buys several full-price games may spend more than a player who uses a subscription catalog heavily.

Exclusive games
- Choose Nintendo when Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Donkey Kong or Nintendo’s local multiplayer design is the central reason you play.
- Choose PlayStation when Sony’s PS5 ecosystem and premium single-player console releases are the priority.
- Choose Xbox when access through Game Pass and the ability to revisit supported older Xbox games matter more than a particular exclusive lineup.
Do not rank platforms by an unsupported total game count. A catalog is only useful when it contains the games you want, in your region, on a plan you can afford and during the period you intend to play.
Disc versus digital
The standard PS5 is the disc-oriented choice; PS5 Digital Edition is download-only. Physical games can be resold, lent or bought second-hand, while digital purchases are tied to an account and platform storefront. Digital editions avoid changing discs and can be convenient for households, but they require enough storage and dependable downloads.
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch games. Xbox model storage and disc behavior differ by Series X|S model, so check the exact console specification if you own a physical library. Do not assume that a disc drive, backward compatibility or a digital license transfers identically across every model.
Backward compatibility
Switch 2’s compatibility with Switch software protects an existing Nintendo library, subject to individual-game compatibility. Xbox emphasizes backward compatibility across supported older Xbox generations. PlayStation buyers should check the specific PS4 or PS5 title and edition they own rather than generalizing from the platform name. Compatibility is a practical buying criterion when you already own dozens of games; it can outweigh a modest difference in launch price.

Local multiplayer
Nintendo is the safest choice for families and groups that play together in the same room, especially with games built around shared screens and simple controls. PlayStation and Xbox also support local multiplayer in selected titles, but check the game’s player count and whether extra controllers are required. Add the cost of a second controller when comparing a family setup rather than comparing console boxes alone.
Storage and practical add-ons

Using an old price guide

Buy PS5 when Sony’s ecosystem and current PS5 library are your priority. Select the $599.99 Digital Edition only if download-only ownership suits you; select the $649.99 standard model when discs, resale or second-hand games matter. Choose the $899.99 PS5 Pro for a premium display and performance-focused setup, not as the default recommendation.
