For most players on PS5, Performance is the better default. It targets up to 60 frames per second, which makes driving, aiming, and camera movement feel smoother. Choose Performance RT if ray tracing matters to you and you still want a 60 FPS target. Choose Fidelity only if a more detailed image matters more to you than the frame-rate target, because it trades frame rate for presentation quality.

What each mode is officially set to do
PlayStation’s launch announcement of March 4, 2022 describes the PS5 upgrade as offering up to 60 FPS, 4K visuals, ray tracing, and improved texture quality. Rockstar Games’ PS5 product page describes the graphics modes in similar terms: up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, and improved textures. Neither source gives a single frame-rate figure for every mode, so the table below uses the wording each source actually uses.

Choosing by priority
Performance: the default for most players
Performance is the mode to start with if you spend most of your time moving: driving at speed, chasing, shooting, or panning the camera. Its up-to-60 FPS target is the most direct route to smooth motion, and motion smoothness is the main difference between it and Fidelity. If you cannot tell which mode you are in while playing, Performance is the one most likely to feel responsive during fast action.

Performance RT: ray tracing with a 60 FPS target
PlayStation describes Performance RT as a hybrid of Fidelity and Performance. It keeps the 60 FPS target and adds ray tracing, with upscaled 4K output. It is the right pick if ray-traced lighting and reflections are a reason you want the PS5 version. It is a compromise rather than a free upgrade: the mode is built around ray tracing, so its image character differs from plain Performance, and the official material does not give a per-scene performance comparison between the two.
Fidelity: image quality over frame rate
Fidelity suits players who would rather see a more detailed image than chase the highest frame rate, for example in slower exploration, photo-style screenshots, or sessions where you are not reacting quickly. The cost is the lower frame-rate target. If you find yourself noticing choppy motion in driving or shooting, switch to Performance.

What the targets do and do not promise
The words “up to” and “target” matter. They describe what the game is designed to reach, not a measured result in every situation. Official material does not state a guaranteed frame rate, and no independently measured per-scene frame-rate figures were found in the sources reviewed for this guide. Demanding moments, such as dense traffic or heavy explosions, may fall below a target, and the official sources do not quantify how often that happens.

Rockstar’s Title Update 1.70 notes include a fix for a ray-tracing performance issue. That shows patches can change how a mode performs, but the notes do not show that any mode’s frame-rate target changed. The launch-era announcement is dated March 2022, and the official sources reviewed do not confirm any later change to the mode targets or to measured performance. If you are reading this later, check Rockstar’s update notes for the current state.

What remains unconfirmed
- The exact native render resolution for each mode. Official sources describe output resolution (such as upscaled 4K for Performance RT) but not every mode’s internal resolution.
- Measured frame rates in demanding scenes, beyond the official mode targets.
- Behavior on PS5 Pro. The official sources reviewed do not describe any PS5 Pro-specific mode behavior, so this guide does not make claims about it.
