Hitman: Absolution and Hitman World of Assassination are not two editions of the same game. Absolution is a 2012, story-led campaign that runs locally on both Switch generations; World of Assassination is the 2016–2021 trilogy rebuilt as a large sandbox, available natively on Switch 2 but only through cloud streaming on the original Switch. Choose World of Assassination for modern Hitman’s replayable puzzle-box levels and 100-plus hours of content. Choose Absolution for a shorter cinematic story, dependable offline portability, Joy-Con 2 mouse aiming, or a genuine game card.
The hardware changes the decision as much as the games do: original Switch owners are choosing between a local Absolution port and a streaming WoA client, while Switch 2 owners get native versions of both.

World of Assassination is the stronger recommendation for someone who wants the current Hitman formula and will replay levels for years. Absolution is the better Nintendo-specific choice when local play, a compact campaign, or a full cartridge matters more than content volume.

They represent two different eras of Agent 47 rather than a simple old-versus-new performance comparison.

Hitman: Absolution is a directed 2012 thriller
IO Interactive released Absolution worldwide on 20 November 2012. Its story begins after 47 is betrayed by the Agency, hunted by police and drawn into a conspiracy involving former colleagues. The game follows that personal journey through cinematic set pieces and relatively compact levels. IO Interactive game director Tore Blystad described it as taking 47 on “a personal journey” that explores a different part of the Hitman fantasy; the full statement appears on IO Interactive’s Absolution page.
That focus is why Nintendo Life called Absolution the series’ “black sheep”: missions generally push you through a directed sequence instead of dropping you into a giant social sandbox. Levels still offer alternate routes and optional challenges, but cover-based sneaking, scripted action and disguise detection are more prominent than blending into crowds. A secondary report from Fix Gaming Channel counts 20 missions; treat that as a reported figure rather than an IO Interactive specification.

Absolution has five difficulty levels, with Purist presented in Limited Run’s press material as extremely demanding. Its finite Instinct Mode highlights useful information and disguises, but every use consumes a limited resource. Taking out guards and completing challenges can replenish it. Point Shooting briefly stops time so you can mark several targets and execute them in one sequence.
World of Assassination is the rebuilt sandbox trilogy
World of Assassination combines the campaigns of Hitman (2016), Hitman 2 (2018) and Hitman 3 (2021) in one client. IO Interactive’s current location description lists 21 or more locations, including Paris, Sapienza, Santa Fortuna, Whittleton Creek, Dartmoor and Mendoza. The Signature Edition includes the three main campaigns, Contracts, Escalations, Elusive Target Arcades, Freelancer, Sniper Assassin and featured live content.
IO Interactive, quoted by Gematsu in 2025, says the Signature Edition contains over 100 hours of content. Shacknews counted 25 maps and noted that Freelancer’s roguelike structure can add hundreds of additional hours for players who enjoy rebuilding runs after failure. The core loop is experimentation: learn a location, unlock disguises and starting points, complete challenges, then return with new options.
World of Assassination treats each level as a large puzzle box. Mission Stories can teach a route, but they are only one solution among many. Disguises, accidents, mastery unlocks, Escalations, elusive-target variants and Freelancer create a much broader replay structure than Absolution’s authored campaign.

Absolution asks you to follow 47 through a cinematic journey while improvising within tighter spaces. World of Assassination asks you to study a self-contained ecosystem and repeatedly manipulate it.

Absolution is not a tutorial or a cut-down World of Assassination. It is a deliberate detour in tone and structure. If you prefer a directed action thriller, its “black sheep” status is a description of design, not a reason to dismiss it. If you want the series’ defining freedom, WoA is the correct game.

Which version works on each Nintendo Switch?
On the original Switch, the choice is fundamentally local game versus cloud application. On Switch 2, both games are native installations, although WoA still depends heavily on online services for its complete progression system.

The original Switch WoA application does not install the trilogy locally. It streams the game from a remote server, so image quality, latency and hitching depend on the network. Game Informer reported intact Miami crowds but loose, imprecise aiming and very small handheld text, and recommended a gun-free stealth approach. Absolution’s local campaign is the safer choice for flights, trains and areas with unreliable service.

Absolution on the original Switch
Nintendo Life’s 2025 review describes a 30 fps target with occasional hitches in dense crowds. Textures and other assets were reduced from larger-console versions, yet the review still called the port handsome and scored it 7/10. The game is locally rendered, so those compromises do not create streaming latency.
Absolution on Switch 2
Feral’s Switch 2 Edition adds higher output resolution, richer animation and visual effects, dynamic-shadow and level-of-detail improvements, and Joy-Con 2 mouse support. Its new Performance preset in handheld and TV modes targets 60 fps. Reported maximum output is up to 1620p docked and 1080p handheld, compared with 1080p and 720p on the original Switch. Those are advertised or reported ceilings, not an independent frame-rate chart; busy scenes may fall below the 60 fps target.
To use mouse aiming, slide a Joy-Con 2 on a flat surface. This is a distinctive advantage for players who prefer precise pointing. The Switch 2 release includes Contracts Mode on day one, allowing up to three marked targets, shared contracts and online leaderboards. Feral has described the mode as cross-platform, although that does not establish cross-progression for all save data.
World of Assassination on the original Switch
The cloud version can look closer to other platforms because rendering occurs remotely, but it cannot provide a fixed frame-rate promise. Game Informer reported hitching in cutscenes and loose aiming. The 66 MB download is only the streaming client, not the game’s full assets.

World of Assassination on Switch 2
The native Signature Edition launched with an uncapped frame rate and uneven performance. Reviews from GameSpot and Nintendo Life describe roughly 1080p docked and 720p handheld output, with docked scenes dipping into the 30s. Handheld play can feel better because the Switch 2 display supports variable refresh, while many televisions do not. There was no in-game graphics preset at launch, and HDR could make the map difficult to read until disabled in system settings.
Digital Foundry measured a large difference when changing the console’s TV-output resolution: 4K output averaged 40.45 fps, 1080p averaged 46.88 fps and 720p averaged 59.93 fps. That makes 720p output 62.5% faster than 4K and 48.2% faster than 1080p in that test. This is a system-output workaround, not an in-game performance mode. Internal rendering estimates around 1152p–1188p at the 1080p setting and any DLSS explanation remain unconfirmed.

Patch 3.230.1, released 26 August 2025, fixed auto-save crashes, dark-location lighting, mirror-related drops at 4K, over-bright advertisements and Freelancer shops, and Instinct highlighting. It also added a Frame Rate option that defaults to a 30 fps cap. Nintendo Life reported that the capped mode is generally steadier, while the unlocked option remains available if you accept visible judder.
How much content does each package contain?
WoA wins on volume by a wide margin, but its value depends on whether you enjoy repeating locations. Absolution’s shorter campaign can be an advantage if you want a complete story rather than an ongoing checklist.

The $60 Signature package does not include every historical bonus. GameSpot lists the Elusive Target Arcade contracts Replication, The Base and The Oroborous, plus the Sarajevo Six contracts, as separate $5 eShop packs. On other platforms some of those items had previously been free updates, so check the Nintendo eShop listing before assuming the package is complete.
Can you play either game offline?
Absolution’s story is genuinely portable once installed. Contracts is the online component because creating, sharing and ranking contracts requires a connection, but the campaign itself does not.
Switch 2 WoA is native rather than streamed, yet the full game retains its always-online design. GameSpot found that offline play is possible in a heavily diluted state without progression, rewards, challenges and level mastery. Nintendo Life also reported separate online and offline save progress at launch, so a commute session without data would not update the online file. IO Interactive has described a later IO Account cross-progression refresh, but Switch 2’s inclusion in that rollout was not confirmed. Do not buy WoA expecting reliable cross-save behavior with another platform.
This distinction explains why “native” does not equal “airplane friendly.” Switch 2 removes cloud latency and allows the maps to run from the console, but the progression systems that make WoA compelling still call home. For a dead-zone commute, Absolution is the more dependable choice.
What do the digital and physical editions cost?
Prices below reflect North American, UK and European figures reported for November 2026. The Absolution promotion has a firm date boundary; WoA’s $60 figure is its launch package price, not a guaranteed current sale price.

There is a date discrepancy in early Absolution announcements: an October 15 preview used “until 5 November,” while the later October 23 public-service notice and Feral PR summary specify free through 4 November and paid from 5 November. Use the later date when planning an upgrade.

Which physical cartridge is better?
Absolution has the clearer physical-media advantage. Limited Run Games’ Switch 2 Standard Edition has a full game card, case and eight-page booklet. Pre-orders run from 30 October 2026 at 12:00 p.m. ET through 6 December 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET. MSRP is $49.99, €55.95, £45.00 or CAD $70.99. The card also functions in an original Switch and plays that system’s version.
WoA’s reported retail Signature Edition uses a game-key card rather than a complete card. Gamer.org reports an approximately 61 GB download, making free storage and a broadband connection part of the physical purchase. Live stock and street prices were not established, so verify the retailer listing before ordering.

Choose Absolution if you own only an original Switch
It is the only local, full-game option of these two. You get the campaign without a network, 30 fps performance with occasional crowd hitches, and Contracts when connected. WoA’s cloud client is appropriate only if your internet is stable enough for streaming and you accept the limitations of a remote session.
Choose World of Assassination on Switch 2 for modern Hitman
Newcomers who want hundreds of hours, huge locations and systemic replay should start with Signature Edition. Set expectations correctly: the game underneath is excellent, but the Nintendo port has uneven unlocked performance, a useful 30 fps cap and an online-dependent progression model. Handheld play at 720p output is the most forgiving way to use the hardware; setting TV output to 720p can materially improve the frame-rate results reported by Digital Foundry.
Choose Absolution on Switch 2 for a focused campaign or special controls
Absolution suits players who want the 2012 interpretation of 47, finite Instinct, Point Shooting, Contracts and Joy-Con 2 mouse aiming. It is also the shorter and cheaper SKU. Claim the free upgrade before 4 November 2026 if you already own the Switch release; otherwise the post-promotion upgrade fee is $9.99 / £4.99 / €4.99.
Think twice before rebuying WoA from another platform
Shacknews and GameSpot both caution existing PS5 or PC owners against buying the Switch 2 port solely for technical quality. The purchase makes sense when portability is the decisive feature and you can live with online requirements and the 30 fps cap. It is not a visual or performance replacement for stronger hardware.

The recommendation weighs the factors that actually change the Nintendo experience:
- Design: directed cinematic campaign versus open sandbox systems.
- Content: campaign length, replay modes, maps and optional packs.
