There is no announced slate of Magic: The Gathering unbans outside Commander. The latest cited Wizards announcement, dated August 10, 2026, made no changes in Pioneer or Modern, and recorded format-specific actions in Standard, Legacy, and Vintage. It did not name prospective unban candidates. So the useful question is not which cards Wizards has promised to restore, but what would make a credible case for unbanning a card in a particular format.
What changed in the latest announcement?
Wizards’ August 10, 2026 announcement is the current status point cited here. It listed Badgermole Cub, Stormchaser’s Talent, and Gran-Gran as banned in Standard; made no changes in Pioneer or Modern; banned The Fantasticar in Legacy; and restricted The Fantasticar in Vintage. Pauper also had no changes. These are separate format decisions, not one all-format banned list. Wizards’ announcement is the place to check the exact lists; the next announcement was scheduled for October 12, 2026, a date after the announcement itself.
That announcement does not identify cards that might be unbanned next. Any prediction about a specific card would need to be treated as analysis, not as a Wizards plan.
What makes an unban plausible?
A card being old, memorable, or fun is not evidence that it is safe to restore. The stronger case is format-specific: establish why the card was banned or restricted there, identify a durable change in that format since then, and assess whether that change reduces the original gameplay risk.

Mark Rosewater described the principle in the official Making Magic column “Banned on the Run,” February 17, 2003: “Sometimes cards that were problematic years ago are no longer a problem due to the shift in the metagame.” He said that if Wizards believes such a shift is permanent, it may unban or unrestrict a card, consistent with its philosophy of letting players play with as many cards as possible.
- Format and status: Name the format and verify the card’s current legality there.
- Original problem: Explain the specific gameplay or metagame issue that prompted the ban or restriction.
- What changed: Point to a lasting change in the card pool or metagame, rather than relying on the card’s age.
- Risk of return: Describe what could happen if the original problem reappeared.
Why a single all-format unban list would mislead
A card’s status and its case for restoration can differ across Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, and Pauper. A change in one format does not establish a change in another, and an action in Vintage may be a restriction rather than a ban or unban. Evaluate each format on its own terms and check the relevant official list before treating a card as legal.

The August 2026 announcement illustrates this distinction: it reported no changes in Pioneer and Modern while making different decisions in Standard, Legacy, and Vintage. It gives no basis for inferring a candidate list for a future announcement.

Wizards’ stated approach leaves room for a formerly problematic card to return if the metagame has changed durably, but it does not guarantee that any particular card will. Without a named candidate and dated format evidence, ranking possible unbans would be speculation. The next cited announcement was scheduled for October 12, 2026; consult Wizards’ official announcements for subsequent decisions and current legality.
