For most new buyers, choose the Standard Edition on the platform you actually own. It includes the complete single-player game, while Digital Deluxe was removed from the PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Epic Games stores on February 21, 2023. Cosmic Deluxe is a physical collector-oriented option that may still appear at retail, but its inserts, bonus code and condition must be checked copy by copy. On Nintendo Switch, the game is a cloud-streaming product rather than a locally running cartridge release.
This guide covers Eidos-Montréal’s original 2021 game—not the films, the separate Telltale adventure or a multiplayer title. It explains what each edition historically contained, what can realistically be bought now, and which version fits PS4, PS5, Xbox, PC or Switch.

Which edition should I buy?
Buy Standard unless you have a specific reason to collect Cosmic Deluxe or already own Digital Deluxe. Standard contains the full campaign and avoids the uncertainty around old codes, missing inserts and discontinued account services.
Standard Edition: the straightforward choice
Standard is the normal recommendation for a first purchase. It is the game itself: Eidos-Montréal’s single-player, Star-Lord-led action adventure released on October 26, 2021. The campaign is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a separate cloud-streaming Switch version in selected regions.

On Sony’s current US digital listing, buying Standard provides both PS4 and PS5 downloads. That is useful if you own a standard PS5 with a disc drive or move between generations. The same listing advertises the Social-Lord outfit as an early-unlock bonus; treat that as a cosmetic convenience, not an additional story chapter or a different game.
Physical Standard copies are platform-specific. A PS5 disc does not become an Xbox licence, and an Xbox One disc should not be assumed to contain a Series X|S code unless the retailer explicitly says so. Check the exact console logo, region and new-versus-used condition before paying.

Digital Deluxe Edition: a former product, not a normal current checkout option
Digital Deluxe historically bundled the main game with the Sun-Lord and City-Lord Star-Lord outfit early unlocks, The Hits digital soundtrack and The Art of the Game digital mini artbook. A historical Xbox description separately identified the Social-Lord digital-download early unlock. These labels describe the original offer, not a guarantee that every old key will still redeem.
Eidos-Montréal says Digital Deluxe was removed from the PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Epic Games stores on February 21, 2023. Describe it as a former edition rather than a live alternative. People who purchased it before delisting retain access through their game libraries.
The Square Enix Members service change also affects the old bonus flow. Eidos documented alternate ways for previous Digital Deluxe owners to reach the soundtrack and mini artbook through a PlayStation console library or PC game files. The original email-linking instructions required linking before the service cutoff, so a new buyer should not expect to recreate that account process today.
Cosmic Deluxe: only buy after checking the actual box
Cosmic Deluxe is a physical edition, and Eidos said, “This edition will still be available for purchase after February 21, 2023.” That statement distinguishes it from the delisted Digital Deluxe edition; it does not guarantee that retailers still have stock or that a secondhand package is complete.

The former 25 Square Enix Members Reward Points stopped being granted on February 21, 2023. Because code validity, regional redemption rules and prior use vary, inspect the seller’s photographs and terms rather than paying a premium for an assumed bonus.
Do not promise a steelbook, full-size art book, soundtrack or any other insert unless the specific regional package listing names it. The official transition notice does not establish a universal inventory for every Cosmic Deluxe box. A sealed copy with an intact code is materially different from an opened copy whose code may have been redeemed years ago.

What is the difference between the game editions?
The campaign and core gameplay are not divided into separate editions. The meaningful differences are cosmetic early-unlock items, digital extras and the risks associated with buying discontinued or used packaging.

None of these edition descriptions turns the game into a multiplayer product. It is a one-player adventure. The publisher’s launch material also reports more than 40 in-game outfits and more than 30 classic 1980s hits; those figures describe the game’s broad content, not a count of Deluxe-exclusive costumes or a promise that the separate digital soundtrack contains every song heard during play.

Which platform should I choose?
Choose the platform that matches your hardware, storage and tolerance for physical media or cloud dependence. The same campaign is sold under different entitlement rules on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Switch.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Sony’s current US Standard listing advertises both PS4 and PS5 downloads. It also lists offline play and one player. A PS5 owner who buys digitally therefore receives the generation-appropriate download under that listing’s terms.
A PS4 disc is different. To download or play the PS5 version using a PS4 disc entitlement, you must insert the PS4 disc. A disc-free PS5 cannot use that disc-based upgrade because it has no way to verify the physical licence. If you own a PS5 Digital Edition, buy a digital copy or a PS5-compatible digital entitlement instead of assuming a used PS4 disc will work.
The US PlayStation listing currently mentions PlayStation Plus Extra catalogue access. Catalogue availability is a changeable subscription benefit, not permanent ownership; verify the live listing before relying on it. A subscription can be sensible for a short playthrough, while Standard ownership is the less conditional option if you want the game to remain in your library after a catalogue change.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
Xbox launch guidance describes Smart Delivery for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. This is intended to provide the appropriate version for the console associated with the licence, but a physical listing still needs careful inspection. Confirm the seller’s disc format and console compatibility, especially for used stock or an older preorder listing.
Do not treat a historical preorder description as proof that a present-day box includes every promotional insert. Smart Delivery addresses the game version delivered by Xbox; it does not restore expired promotions or guarantee an unused code inside a secondhand package.

PC: Steam and Epic
Steam’s current listing requires Windows 10 64-bit, at least 8 GB of RAM and 80 GB of available storage. The recommended memory figure is 16 GB. Steam also names supported graphics processors in its live requirement table; compare that complete table with your own machine instead of inferring performance from the RAM number alone.
Leave more free space than the stated minimum when possible. The 80 GB figure is a storefront requirement checked in 2026, not a promise of a particular frame rate or loading time. Driver support, processor performance, resolution and graphics settings still affect how the game behaves, and no universal performance result for unspecified PCs is published.

Digital Deluxe was removed from both Steam and Epic on February 21, 2023. A listing or key described as Deluxe may therefore be old inventory, a marketplace transfer or an error. Check which launcher receives the entitlement and whether the seller offers a refund if activation fails.
Nintendo Switch Cloud Version
Nintendo’s product listing identifies this as a digital Cloud Version. It uses cloud streaming and is not a locally running cartridge edition. Nintendo explicitly warns, “THIS GAME USES CLOUD STREAMING. PLEASE TRY OUT THE FREE DEMO BEFORE PURCHASE.”
The free demo is the most important Switch-specific precaution. Streaming quality depends on the network path and service availability, so a small client download does not mean the full campaign is stored on the console. The listing’s 83 MB client size should not be read as the game’s complete local installation size.
Nintendo marks the existing listing as compatible with Switch 2 in a way consistent with Switch behavior. That is not evidence of a separately purchasable native Switch 2 edition. Treat any retailer language suggesting a new local Switch 2 release as unverified unless Nintendo announces one.
Is the Nintendo Switch version on a cartridge?
No. The documented Switch product is a digital cloud-streaming version, so Nintendo’s product listing does not establish a locally running cartridge edition. Download the free demo and test the connection at the place where you expect to play before committing to the purchase.
Cloud access also means that storage capacity is not the only consideration. A console can have plenty of free space and still deliver a poor session if the network is unstable. Conversely, the 83 MB client listing does not make this equivalent to a small native game.

Does a PS4 disc upgrade on PS5 Digital Edition?
No. Sony’s guidance requires the PS4 disc to be inserted when downloading or playing the PS5 version, so a disc-free PS5 cannot use that disc entitlement. Choose a digital licence or a PS5 package if your console has no disc drive.
This limitation is about licence verification rather than campaign content. The PS4 and PS5 versions are still the same Star-Lord-led single-player adventure, but the hardware must be able to read the ownership token.

Separate three categories: permanent game content, cosmetic early unlocks and account- or code-dependent extras.
- Permanent game content: Standard already provides the complete campaign and its in-game systems.
- Cosmetic early unlocks: Social-Lord, Sun-Lord and City-Lord are outfit offers. Early unlock means access sooner, not exclusive narrative content.
- Digital extras: The historical Deluxe bundle described a digital soundtrack and mini artbook. Existing owners may access them through the documented console-library or PC-file routes, but a new buyer should not assume the old account workflow remains.
- Account-linked War-Lord offer: The Square Enix Members-linked early unlock stopped with the service change. Eidos says players can still find that outfit in Chapter 13, so the discontinued account offer is not the same as permanently missing story content.
- Social-Lord versus War-Lord: These are separate offers. Do not combine the Social-Lord digital-download bonus with the account-linked War-Lord chronology.
- Throwback Guardians: The historical preorder pack was another separate promotion, not proof that a current Standard or used Cosmic Deluxe copy includes it.
The launch announcement’s figures—more than 40 outfits and more than 30 classic 1980s hits—also help set expectations. The game has substantial in-game cosmetic and music content without requiring a Deluxe purchase, while the separately described digital soundtrack was an edition extra.
How do I check a physical or marketplace listing before buying?
Use this checklist before paying, especially for Cosmic Deluxe or an older Deluxe-labelled listing.
- Match the platform logo. Confirm PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC. A similarly named box for another platform is not interchangeable.
- Identify the edition precisely. Standard, Digital Deluxe and Cosmic Deluxe are different labels. Treat a seller’s generic “deluxe” wording as insufficient until the package photos confirm it.
- Check new, used or resealed status. Used and resealed boxes may have opened or redeemed codes even when the disc appears present.
- Ask which inserts are physically included. Do not infer a steelbook, art book, soundtrack or points from the edition name alone. Require a contents list or clear photographs.
- Verify code terms and region. Ask whether the bonus code is unused, where it redeems and whether it has an expiry or account restriction. Eidos’s notice does not guarantee every secondhand code today.
- Check the hardware requirement. A PS4 disc upgrade needs a disc-capable PS5; a Switch purchase needs a reliable connection; a PC purchase needs the current Windows, RAM, storage and GPU requirements.
- Compare ownership with subscription access. A catalogue listing can disappear or change. If long-term access matters, compare the cost and conditions of buying Standard with the current subscription offer.
- Keep the receipt and listing screenshots. They help if the platform, region, package contents or activation result differs from the seller’s description.
What are the most common buying mistakes?
Confusing the game with a film tie-in
This is Eidos-Montréal’s original story and gameplay structure. It is not a playable version of a Marvel film, not the separate Telltale title and not a multiplayer service. Search results that omit the developer or platform can point to the wrong product.
Assuming Deluxe means more campaign
The historical Deluxe benefits are outfits and digital extras. They do not establish extra chapters, a different ending or an exclusive campaign route. Standard remains the sensible choice when the goal is simply to play the story.
Paying a premium for an unverified code
A code printed in a Cosmic Deluxe box may have been used, may be region-limited or may not match the seller’s description. Eidos documented the post-delisting redemption position, but that is not a live guarantee for every old or secondhand copy.

Buying a PS4 disc for a disc-free PS5
The disc is required for the PS5 upgrade entitlement. If your PS5 has no drive, select digital Standard or another digital package instead.
Treating Switch Cloud as a cartridge release
The Switch listing’s small client size and digital delivery do not mean local execution. Use the demo and evaluate your network before purchase.
Using old preorder copy as current availability evidence
Promotional descriptions from launch can mention bonuses that are no longer granted. Check the current store or package, not only an archived advertisement.
Should I buy, subscribe or wait?
Buy Standard when you want dependable library ownership and a clean platform match. Consider a current subscription catalogue only if its availability, region and terms are visible at the time you intend to play; catalogue access is not the same as owning a perpetual licence.
Waiting makes sense only for a specific reason, such as finding a complete Cosmic Deluxe box at a fair price or confirming a retailer’s code policy. There is no verified future edition announcement in the available evidence, so do not pay for a speculative Switch 2 native release or an assumed reissue.

Is Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy multiplayer or co-op?
No. The product described here is a single-player action-adventure built around Star-Lord’s campaign. Edition upgrades do not add online co-op or a separate multiplayer mode.
Can a new buyer still get the Digital Deluxe soundtrack and artbook?
There is no normal Digital Deluxe checkout on the four storefront groups Eidos named after February 21, 2023. No. The Nintendo listing identifies cloud streaming and recommends a free demo before purchase, so an internet connection is fundamental to play. The small client download is not a locally installed copy of the full game.
