There is no proven universal FPS winner. For current Minecraft versions, Sodium is the strongest evidence-backed starting point: the project describes it as a rendering optimization mod, and Lunar’s support guide calls it the go-to performance mod for modern versions. For legacy installations, especially Minecraft 1.8.9 and versions across 1.7–1.12, Lunar’s guidance instead focuses on OptiFine. Neither recommendation is a controlled head-to-head result proving one client is fastest on every PC.
Which Minecraft client should you try first?
Choose based on your Minecraft version and the setup you want, not a leaderboard assembled from unrelated FPS screenshots.
| Your situation | A sensible starting point | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Minecraft, modular setup | Sodium with Fabric Loader | The Sodium project documentation recommends Fabric Loader for a simple, lightweight setup and describes Sodium as a rendering optimization. Lunar’s support guide says Sodium generally gives higher, more stable FPS than OptiFine on modern versions. |
| Modern Minecraft, bundled Lunar features | Lunar Client with its Sodium add-on | Lunar Client describes a Fabric add-on that loads Sodium alongside Lunar. That does not establish that every Lunar configuration is faster than standalone Sodium. |
| Legacy Minecraft, particularly 1.8.9 | Check the OptiFine guidance for your version | Lunar’s support guide focuses its OptiFine advice on 1.8.9 and describes OptiFine as commonly used across 1.7–1.12. Do not assume modern-version Sodium guidance applies to a legacy PvP setup. |
| Considering Badlion for integrated features | Compare it on your own machine and version | Badlion Client markets more than 100 integrated mods and displays example FPS figures, but its page does not provide enough test detail to compare those figures fairly with other clients. |
Sodium’s official support is for desktop graphics cards with current OpenGL 4.5-compatible drivers, subject to exceptions and caveats for older devices and translation layers. Sodium optimizes rendering specifically; other game systems may need complementary mods. Check the project’s compatibility and setup information for your chosen version and hardware.
Why FPS claims do not settle the comparison
A client’s FPS depends on the Minecraft version, hardware, drivers, settings, scene, and background load. Sodium itself says performance varies with the exact hardware and software configuration. Lunar and Badlion publish their own examples or demonstrations, but those are vendor material—not an independent, reproducible comparison across standalone Sodium, Lunar, Badlion, and vanilla.

Badlion’s product page displays 1600+, 1145, 1090, and 520 FPS. The page does not state enough about the test systems, game settings, scenes, or methods to treat those numbers as comparable test results or as a promise of what a player will achieve. They are examples shown by the vendor.
When comparing two options, use the same PC, Minecraft version, scene, resolution, and settings. Record both average or sustained FPS and frame-time consistency: a high peak number does not show whether play is smooth or interrupted by stutter. Sodium and Lunar both discuss stutter or frame-time stability as well as FPS.

Check your PC before changing clients
A client switch will not fix every cause of low frame rates. Lunar’s support recommendations are starting points, not guarantees; the best settings vary by version and profile.
- Confirm the active GPU. On a dual-GPU computer, Minecraft may run on integrated graphics instead of the dedicated GPU. Check the graphics selection in your operating system or GPU software.
- Reduce render distance. Lunar’s Sodium advice suggests starting at 4–6 chunks. Multiplayer server constraints and your preferred view distance may affect what is practical.
- Review video settings. Test entity distance, particles, transparency, culling, fullscreen, and VSync; change one or a few settings at a time so you can tell what helps.
- Update graphics drivers. Verify that the driver supports the graphics features required by your chosen setup.
- Close overlays and background programs. These can compete for resources or interfere with rendering.
- Avoid allocating excessive RAM. Lunar warns that too much allocated memory can lengthen Java garbage-collector pauses and contribute to stutters or crashes.
When hardware is the limiting factor
First check whether Minecraft is using the right GPU and whether settings or background programs are the real constraint. Buying a new machine is not a default fix for low FPS; it is relevant when the current hardware is the bottleneck.

Minecraft’s system-requirements page states 1080p targets of 30 FPS on the Fast preset at minimum and 60 FPS on the Fancy preset as recommended. The page lists a four-core processor and 8 GB RAM with a discrete GPU, or 12 GB with integrated graphics, for its minimum target; it also specifies a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB VRAM. Its recommended target lists 16 GB RAM and a graphics card with 6 GB VRAM. These are Mojang’s stated requirements and performance targets, not guaranteed results or evidence that one client outruns another.
