Hypixel’s official version guide lists Minecraft 1.8 and 1.21 as its currently supported releases, and recommends 1.8.9 or the latest release for the most optimized experience on its network. That guide was last updated October 4, 2025, so treat the list as a snapshot from that date and confirm it against the live article before you install anything.
What Hypixel lists as supported
Hypixel Support’s article How to Change Your Game Version for Hypixel, updated October 4, 2025, names two supported release lines: 1.8 and 1.21. The same article is careful to separate two ideas. The first is which versions can connect. The second is which version Hypixel recommends for the best performance. The article states: “The best Minecraft versions for Hypixel are 1.8.9 and the latest release.”

In practice, that means 1.8.9 and the current latest release are the two choices Hypixel explicitly points players toward. Being inside the 1.8 or 1.21 families is a compatibility statement, not a promise that every intermediate build will behave the same way.
Which version you should pick
Hypixel presents 1.8.9 and the latest release as equally recommended for optimization. The choice therefore depends on your own situation rather than on a ranking.

The guide does not publish performance measurements, frame-rate comparisons or a gameplay breakdown between these two options, so any choice between them should rest on which Minecraft version you actually want to play.
Edition and platform requirements
Hypixel’s join guide, How to Join the Hypixel Server (updated March 20, 2025), states: “To play on the Hypixel Server, you must own a Minecraft account for PC/Mac (sometimes known as the Java version).” The server address is mc.hypixel.net.

Hypixel says Windows 10 Edition, Pocket Edition and console versions will not work. If you only own a Bedrock-based version, you will need a Java Edition account to join.
Official releases only
Hypixel advises using official releases. Snapshots may not be able to connect, so do not rely on a snapshot to test a new feature on the server. The guide also says Hypixel may consider dropping less-used versions in the future, which means the supported list can shrink as well as grow.

How to switch to a supported version
Hypixel’s version guide explains how to select a release in the Minecraft Launcher. The general process is:
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and sign in with the Java Edition account you intend to use.
- Create a new installation for the release you want (1.8.9 or the latest release, for example) rather than changing an existing one.
- Before pressing Play, confirm in the launcher that the installation you selected is the one with the version you intended.
- Launch the game, then connect to mc.hypixel.net.
Launcher menus change over time, so follow the labels in Hypixel’s guide if they differ from what you see on screen.

Checking whether the list has changed
The support list is dated, and the guide was last updated on October 4, 2025. Because Hypixel has said it may drop less-used versions, check the live article before assuming 1.8 and 1.21 are still the supported lines. If the page now lists different versions, the live page is the authoritative source.
- Confirm the release you want appears in the current “Currently Supported Releases” section of the version guide.
- Use an official release, not a snapshot.
- Make sure your account is Java Edition on PC or Mac.
If you experience lag or disconnects after switching versions, Hypixel’s Solving Lag and Connection Issues on Hypixel guide (updated March 7, 2024) covers general troubleshooting. It notes that wired connections are generally more stable than Wi-Fi. That is a general stability suggestion, not a requirement and not a way to change version compatibility.
