Start with Outlast (2013), then play Outlast: Whistleblower, Outlast 2, and The Outlast Trials. That release-order path gives a first-time player the original Mount Massive story before its expansion, then moves to the separate Arizona investigation and finally to the historically earlier, multiplayer-focused entry. The only reason to change the order is if you care more about in-universe chronology than the way the series originally reveals its world.
The best first-time order
For most players, the correct starting point is Outlast. It is the first release, introduces journalist Miles Upshur and Mount Massive Asylum, and establishes the series’ core stealth-survival-horror language: you investigate dangerous places with a camera, hide or run instead of fighting, and use limited information to survive. Red Barrels lists its release date as September 4, 2013.

Use this sequence for a first playthrough:
- Outlast — September 4, 2013.
- Outlast: Whistleblower — May 6, 2014.
- Outlast 2 — April 25, 2017.
- The Outlast Trials — full release listed by Steam on March 5, 2024.
This is release order, not strict story chronology. It is recommended because the first game introduces the central conspiracy and setting without assuming any prior knowledge, while Whistleblower is designed to add context to that experience. Outlast 2 begins a different investigation with a different cast, and The Outlast Trials is a multiplayer-oriented historical prequel rather than a conventional sequel.
Why Outlast is the right starting point
It establishes the series’ basic premise
In Outlast, Miles Upshur follows an inside tip to Mount Massive Asylum. The abandoned or compromised institution becomes the series’ first major environment, and the game teaches the rules that define the franchise: information comes through documents and recordings, darkness makes the camera’s night vision essential, and confrontation is usually a mistake. Beginning here lets you understand those systems before later games alter the setting or add a different structure.

Its reveals work best in the original context
The first game introduces Mount Massive, its patients and the forces operating behind the outbreak in the order the series originally intended. Starting with a later prequel can give you background before you have the questions that background is meant to answer. That may be acceptable on a replay, but it is less effective for a first run because discovery and uncertainty are part of the original pacing.
It is a self-contained solo entry
Outlast is built as a solo narrative. You do not need a group, matchmaking session or knowledge of later mechanics to begin. The game gives you a clear protagonist, a contained location and a straightforward investigative objective, making it the simplest way to learn whether the series’ hide-and-evade format suits you.
Where Whistleblower belongs
Play it after Outlast on your first run
Outlast: Whistleblower is a prequel in story terms, but it is best played immediately after the base game for a first-time series run. Red Barrels describes it as starting as a prequel and places software engineer and whistleblower Waylon Park at the center. Waylon is the person whose email sends journalists, including Miles, toward the Mount Massive story at the beginning of Outlast.

That relationship creates the ordering distinction that confuses many newcomers: chronological placement does not always equal recommended placement. Whistleblower shows events behind the outbreak and adds another perspective on Mount Massive. After finishing Outlast, you already understand the facility’s broad situation, so the expansion can deepen that context without spoiling the original game’s introductory discoveries.

What it adds
- A new viewpoint: Waylon Park’s role connects the expansion directly to the information that starts Miles’ investigation.
- More Mount Massive context: The story covers events surrounding the outbreak from inside the institution.
- A compact follow-up: It is an expansion rather than a separate numbered mainline game, so it works naturally as the next stop after the original.
When to play it before Outlast
Only use the prequel-first order if you have already completed the series, are replaying the games, or deliberately want to reconstruct the timeline. For a new player, the expansion-first route risks explaining parts of Mount Massive before the base game has established why those details matter.
Where Outlast 2 fits
It is the next mainline story, not a continuation of Miles’ campaign
Released April 25, 2017, Outlast 2 follows journalists Blake and Lynn Langermann in the Arizona desert. Red Barrels’ description begins, “You are Blake Langermann, a cameraman working with your wife, Lynn.” The change in protagonists and location makes this a new investigation rather than a direct return to Mount Massive.
Play it after Whistleblower if you want the series’ narrative progression in release order. The first two Mount Massive experiences then form a natural block: the original investigation followed by Waylon’s perspective. Outlast 2 can also be played by itself because it introduces its own characters, setting and immediate conflict; you do not need to master the first game’s controls or memorize its plot to understand the second game’s basic premise.

You can start with Outlast 2 if its Arizona wilderness, investigative-duo premise or religious-cult horror is what attracts you. It is not the recommended series starting point because it does not introduce the franchise’s original setting or protagonist. Starting there gives you one branch of the anthology-like universe first, rather than the foundation on which the series was built.

What changes for the player
- Location: Mount Massive’s institutional corridors give way to rural and desert environments in Arizona.
- Cast: Blake and Lynn replace Miles Upshur as the central viewpoint.
- Story connection: It is a separate investigation and should be treated as the second mainline story, not as Outlast‘s next chapter in the same location.
Where The Outlast Trials fits
It is chronologically earliest
The Outlast Trials is set in 1959. Red Barrels summarizes its period with the line, “It’s 1959.” The premise centers on Murkoff recruiting civilians as test subjects. Because that date predates the modern-era investigations in the other games, it is the earliest entry in the in-universe timeline.
It is not the usual final chapter
The game is built around repeatable trials and cooperative play rather than a single, linear solo campaign in the style of the first two numbered games. That structure makes it a different kind of Outlast experience: players can work together as test subjects, repeat objectives and develop strategies across sessions. It can be played alone, but its design emphasis is multiplayer and replayability.
For that reason, put it last in a first-time release-order run. By then you will recognize Murkoff’s role and the series’ recurring themes, while the game’s 1959 setting offers historical context instead of interrupting the modern-era narrative flow. If you mainly want cooperative horror or a repeatable game rather than a one-time story, you can move it to the front without needing the other games’ controls.
What its placement means
- Chronology: Earliest, because its scenario is explicitly set in 1959.
- Format: Multiplayer-focused trials and experiments rather than a conventional linear sequel.
- Best use in a first run: Finish the three narrative-focused entries first, then use The Outlast Trials as a historical and replayable expansion of the universe.
Release order versus story chronology
There are two valid orders, each serving a different goal. Release order protects the series’ original reveals and gradually introduces its settings and formats. Story chronology places the 1959 experiments first and then moves through the Mount Massive outbreak before ending with the later Arizona investigation.

| Order type | Sequence | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Release order | Outlast → Whistleblower → Outlast 2 → The Outlast Trials | First-time players who want the intended reveal and gameplay progression |
| Story chronology | The Outlast Trials (1959) → Whistleblower → Outlast → Outlast 2 | Returning players who want the fictional timeline in order |
The chronological placement of Whistleblower and Outlast is close because the expansion covers events behind the Mount Massive outbreak and leads into the email that prompts Miles’ investigation. The practical recommendation remains to play the base game first, then the expansion, because release order preserves the original game’s setup.
Choose an entry by the experience you want
| If you want… | Play first | Reason |

| A new location and cast | Outlast 2 | Blake and Lynn investigate in the Arizona desert in a separate mainline story. |
| Cooperative or replayable horror | The Outlast Trials | Its 1959 Murkoff test-subject premise is built around repeatable trials and multiplayer play. |

1. Begin with Outlast
Treat the first game as your introduction to the rules of the universe. Follow Miles’ investigation through Mount Massive, read the documents that explain what you find, and let the game establish its stealth and camera mechanics before moving on.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
3. Move to Outlast 2
Expect a reset in cast and environment. Blake and Lynn’s Arizona investigation is a separate branch, so approach it as the next mainline story rather than as a continuation of Miles’ route through the asylum.
4. Finish with The Outlast Trials
Use the Trials as the final release-order stop if narrative context matters most. Invite other players if you want its cooperative design, or approach it as a repeatable horror experience if you prefer experimenting with objectives and survival tactics. Its 1959 date makes it a prequel in the setting’s history even though it was released in 2024.
Common ordering mistakes
Starting with Whistleblower because it is a prequel
A prequel label describes chronology, not the best introduction. The expansion’s connection to Waylon’s email and the Mount Massive outbreak has more impact once you have experienced Outlast.
Assuming Outlast 2 requires the first game’s controls
It follows a different cast and investigation. Playing the original first is recommended for series context, but Outlast 2 is accessible as a standalone story.
Treating The Outlast Trials as a direct sequel
Its 1959 setting and Murkoff test-subject format make it a historical prequel with a multiplayer structure. It does not occupy the same narrative role as a numbered, linear sequel.
Confusing release date with timeline date
The Outlast Trials released in full on March 5, 2024 according to Steam’s catalog, but its story is set in 1959. Outlast released on September 4, 2013; Whistleblower on May 6, 2014; and Outlast 2 on April 25, 2017. Release sequence and fictional chronology therefore produce different lists.
Final recommendation
For a first visit to the series, play Outlast → Whistleblower → Outlast 2 → The Outlast Trials. This order introduces the original premise, preserves the Mount Massive reveals, moves to the separate Arizona story, and ends with the 1959 multiplayer prequel. Choose chronological order only when reconstructing the universe matters more to you than experiencing the games in the order players first encountered them.
