Start with sign-in protection: set up a passkey if your devices and sign-in method support it; otherwise enable 2-step verification (2SV) and save the backup codes. Then use a unique password, secure the email address tied to your account, review privacy and communication controls, protect shared-console access, and remove unfamiliar authorized apps. This order prioritizes preventing account takeover before reducing unwanted exposure or access through devices and connected services.
What should you change first on a PlayStation account?
Work down this list in order. The first three steps protect the account’s sign-in and recovery path; the next steps limit what other people can see or do, and reduce exposure from shared hardware and third-party services.

- Set up a passkey if your devices and browser support it. PlayStation calls passkeys a password replacement for signing in.
- If a passkey is not available, enable 2SV with an authenticator app or text message. Save the backup codes as soon as setup provides them.
- Use a unique password and secure the email address associated with the account. Do not reuse a password from another service.
- Adjust privacy and communication controls to match who you want to find you, view your information, or contact you.
- Set a console login passcode and sign out on shared or public consoles.
- Review authorized apps and unlink any third-party service you do not recognize or no longer use.
These controls solve different problems. A strong sign-in method protects account access; privacy settings control visibility and contact; a console passcode helps protect an account session on hardware; and an authorized-app review checks access that may remain through a connected service.
Should you use a passkey or 2-step verification?
Use a passkey when it works with the devices and sign-in route you use. If it does not, 2SV is the fallback: PlayStation supports verification codes by authenticator app or SMS. Either way, plan for recovery before relying on the protection.

PlayStation does not present these options as identical setup flows: passkey setup is available through Account Management or PS5 settings, while 2SV can be configured to send codes by SMS or an authenticator app. Choose based on compatibility and recovery readiness, rather than enabling a feature you cannot reliably use when signing in.
How do you set up a passkey or turn on 2SV?
Use the web account settings when that is the easiest route, or configure a passkey directly on a PS5. The available paths differ by feature.
Set up a passkey
- On the web, open Account Management > Security. On PS5, go to Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey.
- Follow the on-screen setup and use a device and browser that PlayStation supports.
- Before you depend on it, confirm that you can use the passkey on the devices and sign-in routes you actually need. Compatibility can differ, including for Remote Play on Mac and some Android/Windows combinations.
If your device or browser cannot use the passkey reliably, do not treat setup as complete protection for every sign-in situation. Use 2SV instead when passkeys are unavailable to you.
Enable 2-step verification
- Open Account Management > Security.
- Choose an available 2SV method: SMS or an authenticator app.
- Complete activation and save the backup codes somewhere you can retrieve them if your phone or SIM is unavailable.
PlayStation describes 2SV as a way to receive verification codes through either SMS or an authenticator app. Its support guidance specifically advises recording backup codes after activation; leaving that task until a device is lost makes the recovery plan less useful.

How should you handle your password and sign-in email?
If you use password sign-in, choose a unique password and protect the email address tied to the PlayStation account. A reused password can expose the account if another service is compromised, while access to the sign-in email matters for account communications and recovery.
On PS5, change the password at Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Security > Password. On the web, use Account Management > Security. PlayStation also provides the option to switch to passkey authentication. These settings are about the PlayStation sign-in credential; make sure the email account itself is also protected with a password you do not reuse.

Which privacy and communication settings should you tighten?
Review both who can see your account information and who can initiate contact. Restrict each audience to the people you want rather than leaving visibility or communication broader than necessary.
Review what other players can see
PlayStation privacy controls cover your real name, profile, friends, connections, online status, current game, gaming history, and shared media. Consider each category separately: information that helps friends recognize you may not need to be visible to every player who can find your profile.

Limit unsolicited contact
Check who can send friend requests, messages, party invitations, and game invitations. If strangers are contacting you, restrict the relevant communication control rather than changing unrelated sign-in settings. Account-level privacy changes apply across devices.
Find the privacy controls on each platform
- Web: Account Management > Privacy settings.
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings.
For a child account, account privacy is also shaped by family management: the family manager may control settings. Review the account’s management context instead of assuming every privacy option is independently available to the child.

How do you protect an account on a shared PS5 or PS4?
Set a console login passcode and sign out when you use public or shared hardware. Account-level sign-in protection does not replace securing a session on a console that other people can access.
PlayStation recommends a login passcode to prevent someone who does not know it from signing in. Treat signing out as a separate habit: do not leave your account active on a console used by other people, especially a public device. PlayStation also advises users never to share account details.

Why should you review authorized apps?
Check which third-party services have access to account data and unlink anything unfamiliar. This is a separate check from changing your password: an app or service with authorized access may remain connected until you remove it.
Open Account Management and inspect the authorized apps or connected services shown for your account. If you do not recognize an entry, or no longer want it connected, unlink it. Do not assume that a password change alone has removed third-party authorization.

The web Security page includes sign-in ID, passkey, password, mobile number, and 2SV controls. On PS5, the passkey option appears under Security as Sign in with Passkey. Privacy controls are account-level and apply across devices.

What should you do if you suspect an unfamiliar login?
Prioritize regaining control of the sign-in path, then check for access that is not limited to the password. Use Account Management security settings to review or update sign-in credentials and 2SV, inspect authorized apps for unfamiliar services, and secure the email account associated with PlayStation.
- If you already use 2SV, retrieve your saved backup codes if the verification device is unavailable.
- If the suspicious activity followed use of a shared console, sign out there and set a login passcode.
- If unexpected messages or invitations are the problem rather than account access, adjust privacy and communication controls separately.
These steps address different possible exposures; a single password change may not resolve an active session on shared hardware or an app that still has authorization.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a passkey for PlayStation Remote Play on a Mac?
PlayStation documents a compatibility caveat for Remote Play on Mac, so do not assume a passkey will work in every Mac Remote Play sign-in flow. Check the supported sign-in route for your setup and keep an alternative protection method available if needed.
What happens if I lose the phone used for PlayStation 2-step verification?
If you saved the backup codes when you enabled 2SV, those codes are the recovery resource to use when the phone or SIM is unavailable. Without prepared backup access, recovery may be more difficult; do not wait for a device problem to save them.
Can a child change PlayStation privacy settings without a parent?
Not necessarily. A child account may be managed by a family manager, who can control its settings, so the available choices can differ from those on an independently managed account.
Does changing my PlayStation password remove access from connected apps?
A password change alone may not remove third-party services that were separately authorized to access account data. Review connected or authorized apps in Account Management and unlink any access you do not want to keep.
