For most buyers, get the PS5 Slim with a disc drive. It combines current-generation PS5 performance, a 1TB SSD, Blu-ray support and access to the huge PS4 library without paying the PS5 Pro premium. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition only if your games are, and will remain, downloads. Choose PS5 Pro if you have a high-quality 4K/120Hz display and specifically value sharper image quality, advanced ray tracing, PSSR and 2TB of storage. A used PS4 makes sense for a strict budget or a PS4-specific need, not as the normal choice for a new buyer.

At a glance: the four choices

Sony’s current U.S. recommended prices, announced April 2, 2026, are $649.99 for the disc-equipped PS5, $599.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. These are U.S. RRPs; retailers, promotions and other countries can differ. Retail listings often call the current smaller disc model “PS5 Slim,” while Sony’s product pages may simply call it PS5.

Console Storage and media Best fit Main compromise
PS5 Slim (disc) 1TB SSD; built-in Blu-ray disc drive; downloads supported Most buyers, physical collectors, PS4 disc owners Costs $50 more than the Digital Edition at Sony’s U.S. RRP
PS5 Digital Edition 825GB SSD; no drive included; compatible drive can be added Players committed to downloads who want the lowest new-console price Cannot read PS4 or PS5 discs unless you add the separate drive
PS5 Pro 2TB SSD; no drive included; separate Disc Drive accessory Enthusiasts with a suitable 4K/120Hz display $899.99 U.S. RRP before any drive or stand; benefits vary by game and display
Used PS4 Slim Up to 1TB, depending on the particular unit; disc drive on disc models Strict budgets, a child’s first console or a PS4-only requirement Used condition, price and warranty depend on the seller; no PS5 games or current-generation performance

The “PS5 Slim” name describes the smaller revision rather than a separate generation. It runs the same PS5 game ecosystem as the standard PS5 listing. The important buying decisions are the presence of a disc drive, storage capacity, graphics targets and whether you are buying new or used.

Why the PS5 Slim disc model is the default recommendation

Sony lists the disc-equipped PS5 with a 1TB internal SSD and a Blu-ray drive. It plays PS5 games, PS4 games on compatible discs and downloaded games. That flexibility matters because a disc model can use second-hand games, borrow or resell discs, play Blu-ray movies and accept eligible disc-based upgrades, while still giving you the complete digital storefront.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The $649.99 U.S. RRP is $50 above the Digital Edition’s April 2026 RRP. That difference is the price of preserving the option to use physical media; it is not a performance upgrade. If you already own PS4 discs, the disc model can be less expensive than replacing that library digitally.

Choose it when

  • You own PS4 or PS5 discs, or expect to buy used physical games.
  • You want the broadest choice of retailers, borrowing and resale.
  • You want 1TB rather than the Digital Edition’s 825GB starting capacity.
  • You are unsure whether your future library will be entirely digital.

Skip it when

If every game you own is digital, you never watch Blu-ray movies and the lower upfront price matters more than flexibility, the Digital Edition may be the better fit.

When the PS5 Digital Edition is the right buy

The PS5 Digital Edition is the least expensive new option in Sony’s current U.S. lineup at $599.99 RRP. It has an 825GB SSD and no built-in disc drive. Downloaded PS5 and PS4 games work normally, but the console cannot read a PS4 game disc, a PS5 game disc or a disc-based upgrade.

Sony supports adding a separate compatible Disc Drive later. The drive raises your total cost and requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. Treat the add-on as a future option, not as a free feature: if you already know you need discs, compare the combined cost with the disc-equipped PS5 before buying.

Digital Edition checklist

  • Your existing library is downloaded or can be replaced digitally.
  • Your internet connection and storage-management habits are suitable for large downloads.
  • You do not depend on PS4 discs, disc-only promotions or lending games.
  • You accept 825GB rather than 1TB of included storage.

Digital ownership also means you depend on your account and the PlayStation Store for purchases and redownloads. The console is not technically slower than the disc model; the trade-off is media access and capacity, not frame rate.

Who should pay for PS5 Pro?

PS5 Pro is an enthusiast model, not a required replacement for the PS5 Slim. Sony describes it as combining advanced ray tracing, high-frame-rate gameplay, very sharp image clarity and AI-driven upscaling called PSSR. The launch configuration includes a 2TB SSD. Its April 2, 2026 U.S. RRP is $899.99, and Sony’s Disc Drive is sold separately.

The display requirement

Pro’s extra rendering headroom is most useful on a good 4K display, especially one capable of 120Hz input. On a 1080p television, or on a screen where you sit too far away to resolve fine detail, the visible improvement can be modest. A 4K/120Hz display is not required for the console to function, but it is the sensible context for paying for its image-quality features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you are buying

  • Advanced ray tracing: more demanding lighting and reflections in games that support the feature.
  • PSSR: Sony’s AI-driven upscaling, intended to produce sharper output from a lower internal render resolution.
  • High-frame-rate options: more opportunities for games to combine detailed visuals with smooth performance, subject to each game’s patch and settings.
  • 2TB storage: substantially more built-in space than the 1TB disc PS5 or 825GB Digital Edition.

These are game-dependent benefits rather than a guarantee that every title receives a dramatic upgrade. Check whether the games you play have Pro enhancements before treating the premium as worthwhile. Add the cost of a separate Disc Drive if you use physical games; the $899.99 figure does not include one.

Pro is worth considering when

  • You already own, or plan to buy, a high-quality 4K/120Hz display.
  • You care about image quality, ray-traced effects and stable high frame rates more than purchase price.
  • You want 2TB built in and prefer not to manage storage as often.
  • You are comfortable paying for the console and any required drive separately.

For ordinary 4K television owners who mainly want to play the same PS5 games, the PS5 Slim supplies the better value. Pro is a luxury performance tier.

Is a used PS4 still worth buying?

A used PS4 can be sensible when the purchase price is the decisive factor, a child needs an inexpensive first console, or you need a PS4-specific title or peripheral. Sony describes the PS4 Slim as a slimmer, lighter PS4 with up to 1TB of storage. Official information does not establish a single current used-market price or a standardized warranty, so the deal depends on the individual seller and unit.

The trade-off is substantial: you give up PS5 performance, PS5-only releases and the convenience of one console for both generations. Sony reported that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were playable on PS5 at launch in 2020; its current support information describes the compatible catalog as the overwhelming majority of PS4 games and thousands of titles. That makes a PS4 a poor default purchase if a PS5 is within reach.

Inspect a used PS4 before paying

  1. Confirm the exact model and storage. Check whether it is a PS4 Slim and whether the drive is the advertised capacity; “up to 1TB” is not a guarantee for every listing.
  2. Test power and video. Start the console from cold, connect it to a display and verify that it reaches the home screen without repeated shutdowns or error messages.
  3. Check the disc drive. Insert and eject a known-good game if the model has a drive. Listen for abnormal grinding and confirm that the game appears on the home screen.
  4. Test the controller and ports. Check both analog sticks, every button, charging, HDMI output and USB ports. A cheap console becomes less cheap when a controller or cable must be replaced immediately.
  5. Verify account status. The seller should remove their account and deactivate the machine as their primary PS4. Do not buy a console that remains locked to someone else’s account.
  6. Get the return and warranty terms in writing. Used protection varies by seller; do not assume a manufacturer warranty transfers or remains active.

Buy a used PS4 for a defined reason, not because an apparently low listing price hides the cost of missing PS5 features. If you need to play new PS5 releases, the PS4 cannot substitute for a PS5.

Can a PS5 play PS4 discs?

Yes, but only a PS5 with a disc drive can read a PS4 game disc. Insert the disc, install the game and leave the disc in the console whenever you play; the disc serves as the license. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs. The same drive requirement applies to eligible upgrades that begin with a PS4 disc.

Digital PS4 purchases associated with your PlayStation account can be downloaded on a PS5 when the title is supported. Compatibility is broad but not universal: Sony’s launch statement covered more than 99% of 4,000-plus PS4 games, while current support language says the overwhelming majority. Check an individual game’s listing when it is important to you.

Disc versus digital: calculate the real cost

Compare the complete setup, not just the sticker price. For a disc buyer, that means the console and any stand or other accessory you actually need. For a Digital Edition buyer, include a separate compatible Disc Drive if there is any realistic chance you will want physical games. For PS5 Pro, the drive is an additional purchase from the start if you own discs.

Physical games can sometimes be found used or discounted at retail, while digital purchases are tied to your account and cannot be resold. Digital is simpler and avoids swapping discs; physical is more flexible for lending, collecting and buying second-hand. Choose based on how you actually acquire games, not on a theoretical future library.

Storage, downloads and future releases

The included capacities are 1TB for the disc PS5, 825GB for the Digital Edition and 2TB for PS5 Pro. Actual free space is lower than the advertised capacity because system software occupies part of the drive. A digital-heavy library makes storage management more important, particularly on the 825GB model; Pro’s 2TB capacity is a convenience advantage as well as a performance-model feature.

Sony’s current PS5 product page states: “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only.” This is a statement about newly released games and purchase format from that date; it does not turn existing PS4 discs into digital licenses or make a Digital Edition able to read discs. If physical ownership matters to you, buy the disc-equipped console for the current library and understand that Sony’s stated 2028 policy may reduce physical releases for new games.

A practical decision process

  1. List your existing games. Mark every PS4 or PS5 game you own on disc. One disc is enough to rule out a Digital Edition unless you are willing to repurchase it or add a drive.
  2. Set the complete budget. Use the April 2026 U.S. RRPs as reference points, then add a separate drive for a Digital Edition or Pro when needed. Retail prices and regional pricing can differ.
  3. Check your display. If you have a 4K/120Hz screen and care about advanced rendering, evaluate Pro-enhanced games. Otherwise, start with the PS5 Slim comparison.
  4. Choose capacity based on habits. Heavy downloads favor 2TB Pro; mixed disc-and-download use makes the 1TB disc PS5 a balanced middle ground; the Digital Edition’s 825GB is adequate when you routinely delete and redownload games.
  5. Decide whether used risk is acceptable. Pick a used PS4 only after confirming the seller’s testing, return policy and warranty terms, and only when PS4 software meets your needs.
  6. Buy the model that preserves your likely options. When you are uncertain about discs or future purchases, the PS5 Slim with a drive avoids the most expensive regret: replacing a digital console or repurchasing a physical library.

Bottom line by buyer type

  • Most people: PS5 Slim with a disc drive.
  • All-digital household: PS5 Digital Edition, provided 825GB and the lack of a drive suit you.
  • Image-quality enthusiast: PS5 Pro with a suitable 4K/120Hz display; budget separately for the Disc Drive if needed.
  • Strict budget or PS4-only requirement: a carefully tested used PS4, with seller and warranty checks.
