Your choices are unsold new copies and used discs; there is no single Sony catalog showing every title, region and seller still carrying one. Availability, condition and price change constantly.
Sony’s July 2026 announcement says production of physical discs for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028, but explicitly says the change does not affect games released, or scheduled for release before that date, in disc format. A disc preserves access to the game data on it, not necessarily every patch, downloadable expansion, voucher or online feature.

The practical rule: a retail disc creates a second buying route
Digital storefronts and physical distribution are separate channels. If a PS4 or PS5 title shipped on a genuine retail disc, you can look for that disc from a retailer, specialist shop, marketplace or second-hand seller even when the relevant digital Store no longer accepts new purchases. The disc is an independently sold product rather than a license that has to be issued by the Store at the moment you buy it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis does not mean every game is still easy to find. Stock differs by country, language edition, platform, packaging and seller. A game may have had a disc release in one region but only a digital release in another. Some boxes contain a download code instead of a disc, and a used copy may have a missing or already-redeemed code. Treat “physical” as a claim to verify, not as a guarantee that every listing includes the same content.

What Sony’s January 2028 disc-production cutoff changes
In July 2026, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, wrote that the transition “has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.” The policy concerns manufacturing new discs for games from January 2028 onward. It does not recall existing copies, invalidate discs already sold or stop those copies circulating between owners.
For a buyer, the timeline has three separate parts:
- Before January 2028: a game may launch in both disc and digital form. Any manufactured discs can continue to be sold after the digital channel changes.
- From January 2028 for new releases: Sony’s announcement ends new physical-disc production for new PlayStation games. A future title may therefore be digital-only unless another arrangement is announced.
- After a storefront restriction or closure: remaining new stock and used copies are the physical supply. They are not replenished indefinitely, so scarcity can vary by title and region.
Sony has not published a title-by-title, region-by-region inventory of every disc that remains in shops. No authoritative total counts all PlayStation games currently purchasable in physical form. Any list claiming to be complete would become stale as stock changes and would risk confusing regional editions with worldwide availability.

Which PlayStation generations have a physical buying path?
| Platform or service | What to look for | Hardware requirement | Store or network caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 games on disc | A case and disc explicitly labeled for PS4 | A PS4 with a working optical drive, or a compatible PS5 with a disc drive for supported use | Patches, DLC, vouchers and some online functions can still need network services |
| PS5 games on disc | A retail case and disc labeled for PS5 | A PS5 model with a disc drive | Some editions include bonus content delivered through a Store code |
| PS3 and PS Vita digital purchasing | The console’s Store and an accepted funding method | The original PS3 or PS Vita hardware | Since October 27, 2021, those consoles cannot take a credit card, debit card or PayPal directly for digital content or wallet funding |
The last row is important because “the Store closes” can describe different events. Sony’s 2021 notice changed how PS3 and PS Vita owners fund purchases on the consoles; it did not erase already purchased content. Existing PlayStation Plus subscriptions and previously purchased content remain accessible under Sony’s stated conditions. A payment restriction, a storefront shutdown and loss of redownload access are different situations, so identify the platform, service and region before assuming a disc is the only route.
A documented example: Horizon Forbidden West physical editions
Sony’s Games Support information refers to the “physical editions” of Horizon Forbidden West. Those editions include the base game on retail media and a voucher for bonus content that must be redeemed through PlayStation Store. That makes it a clear example of a game with a physical purchase route while also showing the limitation of discs: the base game and Store-dependent extras are separate parts of the package.
When you see a listing for a physical edition of this or another game, check whether the seller is promising only the disc, an unused voucher, or both. A used copy can contain a code that was redeemed by the first owner. The disc may still install and play the base game even when the bonus is no longer transferable, but the listing should not imply that an expired or used code is included value.

Can a PS4 disc be used on a PS5?
Compatibility depends on the console’s drive and the particular upgrade or license flow. Sony’s support wording is explicit: “PS4® game discs can’t be used with the PS5 Digital Edition.” A PS4 disc can be used for an eligible PS5 upgrade only on a PS5 with a disc drive, and Sony says to keep the disc inserted when the upgrade or license check requires it.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

|---|---|---|
| PS4 with disc drive | Use the disc as a PS4 game | Disc condition, region and any required update |
| PS5 with a disc drive | Play supported PS4 titles; an eligible title may offer a PS5 upgrade | Whether that title’s upgrade is supported, whether the disc must remain inserted, and whether the upgrade has separate Store terms |
| PS5 Digital Edition | Cannot use a PS4 game disc | Buy a digital license instead, or use a PlayStation console with a compatible disc drive |
Do not infer backward compatibility from the appearance of the box. Read the platform label and the exact console model before paying. A PS5-branded disc is not interchangeable with a PS4 disc, and a PS4 disc is not a substitute for a digital license on a disc-less console.
How to verify a specific physical game before buying
- Locate a verifiable disc listing. Use a publisher page, a retailer SKU or a reputable used listing that clearly identifies a PS4 or PS5 disc. Product photographs should show the disc or an unambiguous disc edition, not only a generic box.
- Match the platform to your hardware. Confirm the case says PS4 or PS5 and that your console has a compatible disc drive. If you are planning a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade, check that the title supports that path and that the disc remains required for the license check.
- Check region and language information. Compare the listing’s country, age rating, included languages and edition name with your console and account. Regional packaging can contain different codes or bonus terms.
- Identify the actual contents. Ask whether the package contains a game disc, a download-only code, or a disc that requires a separate online entitlement. “Physical copy” is not enough if the important part of the product is a code.
- Separate the base game from extras. Record whether DLC, a soundtrack, costumes, a season pass or a bonus voucher is promised. For a used copy, ask whether each code is unused; do not assign value to a code that may already be redeemed.
- Inspect a used disc. Look for deep scratches, cracks, a damaged center ring or a missing case. Request the seller’s return terms where possible, because a disc that cannot be read is not rescued by its original packaging.
- Check current stock and price. Availability, seller quality and prices are volatile. Capture the listing details at the time you buy rather than relying on an old catalog entry or a search result that no longer reflects stock.
What a physical disc does not guarantee
A disc generally supplies the data for the base game, but it is not a promise that every part of the original product will work forever without a network connection.

- Patches: bug fixes, performance updates and accessibility changes may be delivered online. The unpatched launch build is what remains on the disc when no update service is available.
- Downloadable content: expansions and other add-ons may be separate purchases and may disappear from a Store even though the base disc still installs.
- Voucher content: a code can require PlayStation Store redemption, can be region-locked and can be single-use. The Horizon Forbidden West physical edition’s bonus voucher demonstrates this split.
- Online multiplayer and servers: a disc cannot keep a publisher’s servers running. Modes that require account authentication or live servers can stop working independently of the disc.
- Account and licensing checks: a console may need to verify an upgrade or entitlement online. Keep the disc available when Sony’s upgrade or license flow requires it.
Before buying for preservation, decide whether you need the original playable software, current patches, a complete edition with its extras, or an online service. Those are different goals and may require different evidence from the seller.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are used PlayStation games still worth buying?
Often, yes, when your priority is owning a playable base game and the disc is compatible with your console. Used copies can be the only supply after new stock sells through, but their value depends on what is physically present and what still depends on a Store or server.
| Buying situation | Potential advantage | Risk to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sealed new disc | Best chance of receiving an unused voucher and complete packaging | Higher price, regional mismatch or a code that has an expiration or account restriction |
| Complete used copy | Usually cheaper and may include the original case and inserts | Voucher may already be redeemed; disc condition and seller returns matter |
| Loose disc | Lowest-cost route to the base game | No proof of region, missing artwork, uncertain condition and no included codes |
For a used purchase, ask the seller to identify the disc’s platform, region and condition in writing. If the listing advertises DLC or a bonus, treat that as a separate entitlement and request confirmation that the code is unused. A low price is not a bargain if the disc cannot be read or the advertised content has already been claimed.

How to interpret a PS3 or PS Vita “Store closure”
Sony’s important-notice guidance says that from October 27, 2021, PS3 and PS Vita consoles could no longer use a credit card, debit card or PayPal directly to buy digital content or add wallet funds. Owners instead had to add wallet funds through another device, a gift card or another supported method. Sony also says existing PlayStation Plus subscriptions and already purchased content remain accessible.
That history is why a headline about a Store closing needs a scope check. Ask four questions: Which console is affected? Is the change about payment, new purchases, downloads or all account access? Does it apply in your region? Are already purchased licenses still redownloadable? Only after those answers should you decide that a physical copy is necessary. PS3 and PS Vita payment rules do not, by themselves, create a definitive list of disc games that remain in shops.
A simple decision framework for buying after a digital shutdown
- Define the goal. If you only need the base game, a readable disc may be enough. If you need DLC, patches or multiplayer, investigate those services separately.
- Choose the correct generation. Match the PS4 or PS5 label to a console with a drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot accept PS4 discs.
- Prefer documented editions. Use a publisher or retailer description that names the disc edition and region rather than a generic “PlayStation game” listing.
- Price the missing pieces. Include the cost of any Store-only expansion, replacement code or required upgrade when comparing a sealed copy with a used one.
- Buy while supply is healthy. Sony’s January 2028 policy ends new disc production for new games, and older stock is finite. Do not treat today’s availability or price as permanent.
Bottom line for PS4 and PS5 buyers
The games you can still buy physically are the games that had official PS4 or PS5 disc editions and still have new or used stock in your region. Sony’s January 2028 manufacturing change does not remove those existing discs. There is no official complete catalog, so verify the exact edition, console drive, region, disc condition and Store-dependent extras for every title. A physical copy is strongest as a way to preserve the base game; it is not a guarantee of future patches, downloadable content, voucher redemption or online multiplayer.
