The most useful PS5 changes are straightforward: select the headset under Settings > Sound > Audio Output, decide whether automatic switching should be enabled, verify Output to Headphones, set a comfortable headphone volume, and configure the microphone. Headphone 3D audio, EQ, and sidetone are optional tuning choices rather than universal fixes.
Wireless does not automatically mean Bluetooth compatibility. Sony’s guidance says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported, while USB and analog headsets are generally supported but not guaranteed. Check the exact model and connection method with its manufacturer before buying or troubleshooting.

Which settings should you change first?
Start with the settings that determine where sound goes and whether your voice is sent correctly. Once those work, compare stereo with headphone 3D audio and then adjust EQ or sidetone only if you have a specific preference.
| Setting | Path | What it controls | Best first action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Output Device | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | The active audio device | Select the connected headset | Available choices depend on the connected hardware and configuration |
| Switch Output Device Automatically | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | Whether PS5 changes output when a device connects | Enable it if you regularly connect and remove the headset | It is optional; manual selection is more predictable with several audio devices |
| Output to Headphones | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | Which audio feed is sent to the headset | Check it when game or chat audio is missing | The available choices can vary by device |
| Headphone 3D Audio | Settings > Sound > Audio Output | Virtualized positional audio for headphones | Compare stereo, a personalized profile, and the five presets | Preference is personal; no universal competitive setting is established |
| Headphone volume | Settings > Sound > Volume, or Control Center > Sound | Listening level | Raise it gradually to a comfortable level | Headset hardware may also have its own volume control |
| Microphone | Control Center > Mic | Input device, level, and mute behavior | Select the headset mic and speak until the meter reaches Good | Menus and controls vary with the headset |
| EQ Presets | Settings > Sound, on supported PlayStation headsets | Overall tonal balance | Preview Standard, Bass Boost, and Shooter before choosing | Preset availability is hardware-dependent |
How do you make the PS5 use the wireless headset?
Selecting the headset as the output device is the essential routing step. Automatic switching is a convenience setting, not a requirement for wireless audio.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Connect the headset using its supported method, such as its USB wireless transmitter. Do not assume that a Bluetooth pairing screen will make an unsupported third-party Bluetooth headset work.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Choose Output Device, then select the headset from the detected devices.
- If you want the console to change outputs whenever the headset connects, enable Switch Output Device Automatically. Leave it disabled if you frequently use several USB audio devices or want the TV or receiver to remain selected until you change it manually.
- Play a menu sound or game audio and confirm that the headset is producing it. If the device is listed but silent, continue to the Output to Headphones and volume checks rather than repeatedly pairing it.
Sony notes that the settings shown can differ according to the connected devices and the system configuration. A missing menu item therefore does not necessarily indicate a console fault.
What should Output to Headphones do?
Output to Headphones determines which audio feed the console sends into the headset. Check this setting whenever game audio, chat audio, or both appear to be routed somewhere else.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output, select Output to Headphones, and review the choices presented for your headset. There is no single option that is correct for every device or listening setup, so use the choice that matches whether you want game sound, voice chat, or the combination offered by that hardware.
If menus play through the headset but a party does not, verify the output choice and then inspect the party’s own chat controls. If chat works but game sound does not, return to this setting before changing EQ or 3D audio; tonal settings cannot repair an incorrectly routed signal.
How do you enable and personalize PS5 headphone 3D audio?
PS5 can process 3D audio for headphones. You can use a personalized profile made by listening to sounds from different positions and angles, or choose one of five built-in presets. The practical way to decide is to compare the result with ordinary stereo in a game and keep the presentation you can follow comfortably.

Set up a personalized profile
- Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Find the headphone 3D-audio option and start the personalization process.
- Listen to each sound position and angle as instructed, keeping the headset positioned normally on your head.
- Save the profile, then test it with familiar game sounds such as dialogue, effects, and environmental ambience.
Use a preset instead
If you do not want to complete the listening process, select one of the five available presets. Presets are a fast way to compare different spatial presentations, but their labels do not establish that one is superior for every game, ear shape, or headset.

Stereo is a useful reference, not a failure state. Toggle between stereo and 3D audio with the same game scene and volume. Keep the setting that makes important sounds easiest for you to place and understand; Sony’s description of immersive audio is product guidance, not independent evidence that a particular profile improves competitive performance.
How should you set headphone volume and sidetone?
Headphone volume and sidetone solve different problems. Volume changes how loud the game and chat feed is; sidetone, when supported, feeds your own voice back into the headset so you can judge how loudly you are speaking.
- For volume, open Settings > Sound > Volume and adjust the headphone level, or open the Control Center, select Sound, and change it there.
- Start at a moderate level and raise it gradually. Check both a quiet menu and a loud game scene so explosions do not force you to lower the level immediately.
- For sidetone, use the microphone or headset-audio controls where the option appears and choose a level that lets you hear your voice without masking game sounds.
Sidetone is unavailable on some headsets. When the PS5 does not expose the control, check whether the headset itself has mic-monitoring hardware or software. Do not treat the absence of a sidetone slider as evidence that the microphone is defective.
How do you configure the wireless headset microphone?
Use the Control Center’s microphone panel to select the input device, set the level, and choose a default mute policy. The level meter should register speech in the console’s Good range without constantly peaking.

- Press the PS button to open the Control Center and select Mic.
- Confirm that Input Device is the headset microphone, not a controller or another connected input.
- Speak at your normal distance and adjust the microphone level until the indicator reaches Good. Ask a party member to confirm clarity if possible, because a meter cannot reveal every background-noise problem.
- For privacy, set microphone status at login to Mute if you do not want the mic live when you sign in.
- Enable Switch to Mute When Voice Chat or Broadcasting Starts when you want to opt in deliberately rather than transmit as soon as a chat or broadcast begins.
These console choices are separate from a physical mute button. If the headset’s LED or button indicates mute, check both states before troubleshooting the input level.
Which EQ preset should you choose?
EQ is a sound-profile choice, not a required PS5 correction. On supported PlayStation headsets, the console offers Standard, Bass Boost, and Shooter presets, plus adjustable sliders for custom Audio Mode 1, Audio Mode 2, or Audio Mode 3.
Standard
Use Standard as the neutral reference when you are unsure what changed or when dialogue and effects already sound balanced.
Bass Boost
Choose Bass Boost only if you prefer a heavier low end. More bass can make impacts and music feel fuller, but it may also mask quieter details or speech in a dense mix.

Are wireless and Bluetooth the same on PS5?
No. A headset can communicate wirelessly through a dedicated USB transmitter without being a Bluetooth audio device. PlayStation’s 2020 PS5 FAQ says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported, while most USB and analog headsets are supported; the same guidance directs users to the device manufacturer because compatibility is not universal.
Use that FAQ as broad official guidance rather than a guarantee for every product or later firmware revision. Before buying, verify all of the following with the headset maker:

- The exact model is listed as PS5-compatible, not merely PC- or phone-compatible.
- The connection method is supported by the console, such as the supplied USB transmitter or an analog connection.
- Important features, including microphone input, chat/game balance, 3D-audio processing, and firmware updates, are available on PS5 rather than only on another platform.
- The manufacturer’s instructions identify which USB port, adapter, or console mode is required.
PlayStation’s support guidance states, “Not all devices work with your console.” Treat a manufacturer’s compatibility list as a prerequisite, not an optional check. A generic USB adapter is not automatically compatible with every wireless headset.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do headset hardware controls interact with PS5 settings?
Some headsets duplicate console controls with physical buttons or wheels. The PULSE 3D manual, for example, describes dedicated controls for microphone mute, mic monitoring, and chat/game balance. Those are model-specific controls, not settings that every wireless headset exposes.

The same manual notes that some games may not support its CHAT/GAME function. If a balance wheel appears to do nothing in one title, use the PS5’s audio and chat controls where available and check the game’s own audio menu. Avoid assuming that a control works identically across games or headset models.
What should you check when the headset is not working?
Follow the symptom rather than changing every setting at once. That preserves a known-good baseline and identifies whether the problem is routing, compatibility, or the microphone.
Recommended Free Tools
No sound at all
- Confirm the headset is powered and its transmitter or cable is fully connected.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the headset under Output Device.
- Check Output to Headphones and raise the headphone volume in Settings > Sound > Volume or Control Center > Sound.
- If the headset never appears, verify the exact model and connection method with its manufacturer; do not infer compatibility from the word wireless.
The PS5 keeps using the TV or another device
- Enable Switch Output Device Automatically if you want connection-based switching.
- If automatic switching is enabled but unreliable with multiple devices, disable it and select the headset manually under Output Device.
- Reconnect the approved transmitter, then recheck the device list.
Game or chat audio is missing
- Review Output to Headphones and make sure the selected feed matches what you want to hear.
- Check the game’s own audio and voice-chat mixer.
- Remember that a headset’s physical chat/game control may not be supported by every game.
Other players cannot hear you
- In Control Center > Mic, select the headset under Input Device.
- Speak until the level reaches Good, then check the headset’s physical mute switch or button.
- Review login and voice-chat mute policies if the mic starts muted unexpectedly.
3D audio, EQ, or sidetone is missing
Some controls appear only with supported hardware or particular configurations. Confirm that the headset is recognized, then check its documentation; a missing option can be a compatibility limitation rather than a damaged console.
Which setup fits your listening goal?
| Your priority | Recommended approach | What to avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Reliable plug-and-play use | Select the headset manually or enable automatic switching if you connect it frequently; verify Output to Headphones and volume | That every wireless or Bluetooth model will be detected |
| Immersive single-player audio | Compare stereo with a personalized 3D profile and the five presets, then keep the version you prefer | That Sony’s immersive-audio description proves a universal performance gain |
| Clear voice chat | Select the headset mic, target the Good meter range, and choose a deliberate mute policy | That a physical mute button and PS5 mute status are always synchronized |
| More tonal control | Preview Standard, Bass Boost, Shooter, and custom Audio Modes 1–3 on supported headsets | That one EQ works best for every game or listener |
| Using several audio devices | Leave automatic switching off and select Output Device when needed | That automatic switching will always choose the device you intended |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a third-party Bluetooth headset directly with PS5?
PlayStation’s 2020 FAQ says third-party Bluetooth wireless headsets are not supported. A wireless headset with a dedicated USB transmitter is a different connection type, but you still need confirmation from the manufacturer that the exact model works with PS5.
Why does the PS5 show my headset but not its EQ or sidetone controls?
The console exposes some controls only for supported headset hardware and configurations. Use the headset’s own app, firmware instructions, or physical controls when the PS5 menu does not provide a setting; sidetone may simply be unavailable on that model.
Should automatic output switching stay on when I use a TV, receiver, and headset?
It depends on how often you change devices. Automatic switching is convenient for a single regular headset, while manual selection avoids unexpected changes when several audio devices are connected.
How can I tell whether a headset’s chat/game wheel will work in a particular game?
Check the headset manual and the game’s audio documentation. The PULSE 3D manual, for instance, warns that some games do not support its CHAT/GAME function, so the wheel’s behavior can vary by title.
