It is the clearest modern 2D starting point, is sold on a wide range of consoles and PC, and supports local play for up to four people. If you are buying after Rayman Legends Retold launches and want the newest presentation, choose Retold instead. Players seeking something specific should choose differently: Origins for the earlier 2D adventure, Rayman 2 or Rayman 3 for classic 3D platforming, and Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition for the original game plus preservation material.
You do not need to buy the games in story order. Rayman’s main entries are largely self-contained, so hardware, visual style, multiplayer, and the contents of each edition matter more than chronology.

Quick answer: choose by the experience you want
| If you want… | Start with… | What makes it the fit |

What the Rayman series is—and why purchase order is flexible
Ubisoft created Rayman at Ubisoft Montpellier in 1995. The franchise has since appeared in more than 40 games across more than 20 platforms, spanning side-scrolling adventures, 3D platformers, remakes, compilations, and other formats. That breadth can make a first purchase seem complicated, but it also means there is no single required route through the catalogue.
The main decision is whether you want a contemporary 2D game, a 3D classic, or a preservation-focused package. The 2D entries share a playful visual identity without requiring knowledge of earlier plots. The 3D games are separate experiences built around exploration in three-dimensional spaces. The anniversary release is aimed at seeing where the series began rather than serving as the most convenient modern introduction.

Rayman Legends: the safest first purchase for most players
Why it works as an entry point
Rayman Legends keeps its focus on readable 2D platforming while presenting Rayman’s colorful Glade of Dreams setting, varied stages, and boss fights. Its structure is approachable for someone who has never touched the series: you can learn the movement and rhythm without first completing another Rayman game.
Ubisoft lists the game for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. That range is useful when you are buying for a household with older hardware or choosing a version for a console you already own. Ubisoft gives the game a release date of August 29, 2013, so this is an established release rather than an upcoming product whose availability may change.
Local multiplayer
The game supports local co-op for up to four players. That makes it the most straightforward recommendation when the purchase is intended for couch play: one copy on a supported system can serve a group playing in the same room, subject to the console’s controller requirements.
Who should not make it the first choice
Choose something else if your priority is a new-generation presentation, the original 1995 game, or a 3D camera-and-exploration format. Legends is specifically the modern 2D option; its strengths do not turn it into a substitute for the classic 3D entries or the anniversary archive.
Rayman Legends Retold: the newest way to start
What Retold changes
Rayman Legends Retold is described by Ubisoft as a reimagining with new visuals and a retold story. It adds a new realm and stages while preserving the core appeal of a Rayman 2D adventure. You can play alone or with up to four people in local couch co-op.
Ubisoft’s product description also includes Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition, so the package is designed to cover both major modern 2D campaigns rather than requiring separate purchases for the predecessor. The Enhanced Edition’s changes are covered below.

Supported systems
The current Ubisoft product page lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, GeForce Now, and Blacknut. That list is materially different from the older hardware supported by the 2013 release, so check the edition name and platform carefully before paying, especially if you are buying for a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or original Nintendo Switch.

Release-date uncertainty
Ubisoft’s June 2, 2026 announcement says Retold is coming October 1, while the current product page lists December 3, 2026. Those dates conflict. Treat the product-page date as the current storefront listing, but verify the retailer’s date immediately before ordering because release timing is a volatile detail.
Is Retold worth buying instead of Legends?
It is the better first purchase when you have one of the listed newer systems and value updated presentation, additional content, and the bundled enhanced predecessor. The original Legends remains the practical choice when you need its wider legacy-platform support, want a product already released on those systems, or find it at a better price. The choice is therefore about platform and package contents, not a required story sequence.
Ubisoft’s stated aim
“Rayman Legends Retold is our way of revisiting what makes Rayman so special, and re-telling that experience for a new generation of players.”
That description comes from Loïc Gounon, Brand Producer. It explains the positioning: Retold is intended as a refreshed presentation of a known game rather than an unrelated new genre entry.
Rayman Origins and Origins: Enhanced Edition
When to choose the original 2D predecessor
Rayman Origins is the natural choice if you want to experience the earlier 2D game before moving to Legends. It is also the version to consider when you prefer a simpler two-game progression: start with Origins, then continue to Legends.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

What the Enhanced Edition adds
Ubisoft describes Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition as adding 4K output, 60 frames-per-second presentation, collectibles, rewards, haptic feedback, and quality-of-life changes. These are enhancements to the earlier game’s presentation and usability; they do not turn it into the later Legends campaign.
The Enhanced Edition is included with Rayman Legends Retold. If you are already planning to buy Retold, purchasing a separate Origins package would duplicate that campaign. If you are choosing among older releases, confirm whether the listing is the original game or the enhanced version, because the feature set differs.
Rayman 2 or Rayman 3: choosing the 3D classics
Why these games are different
Rayman 2 and Rayman 3 are the right starting points when what attracts you is three-dimensional movement, camera-based navigation, and exploration rather than side-on stages. They belong to the same broad franchise but do not require you to finish the 2D games first.
Which one should come first?
Start with Rayman 2 if you want the earlier of the two classic 3D adventures, then move to Rayman 3 as a follow-up. Choose Rayman 3 first if its particular era or presentation is what interests you; there is no purchase-order rule that blocks a newcomer from doing so.
Ubisoft currently lists both games as purchasable standard editions. The available listing confirms their purchase status, but the supplied product information does not establish one universal modern platform list for each title. Check the store page for your exact device before checkout rather than assuming that a version sold on one system is available on another.
Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition for preservation-minded buyers
What is included
Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition is aimed at players who want the original game and historical context. Ubisoft lists five versions of the original Rayman, more than 120 extra levels, and an interactive documentary.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The five-version package and documentary make this the archival choice, not simply another way to obtain the modern 2D games. The 120-plus additional levels are a specific bonus quantity stated for this edition; they should not be confused with stages from Origins or Legends.

Choose the anniversary edition when seeing the series’ starting point and its development history matters more than having the newest visual treatment. It is also a sensible first purchase for a collector who wants a concentrated package of original-era material. For a player primarily seeking contemporary controls, local co-op, or the later 2D structure, one of the newer entries is a better fit.
2D versus 3D: the most important style decision
| Characteristic | 2D route | 3D route |
|---|---|---|
| First games to consider | Rayman Legends, Rayman Legends Retold, or Rayman Origins | Rayman 2 or Rayman 3 |
| How levels are presented | Side-on platforming stages in colorful worlds | Three-dimensional spaces built for navigation and exploration |
| Modern local co-op information | Legends and Retold support up to four local players | The supplied product information does not establish a comparable co-op mode for the standard 3D editions |
| Best reason to choose it | You want the most accessible contemporary format or a shared couch game | You specifically want Rayman’s classic 3D style |
If you are unsure, choose the 2D route. It offers the clearest modern starting point and the most explicit local-multiplayer support in the current product descriptions. Move to the 3D games when camera-driven exploration is the feature you actually want.
Local co-op: which purchase fits a group?
Both Rayman Legends and Rayman Legends Retold advertise local couch co-op for up to four players. That is the decisive information for a family or group choosing a first Rayman game for the same screen. Confirm that every player has a compatible controller and that the selected platform supports the local setup you intend to use.
The product information supplied for Rayman Origins, Rayman 2, Rayman 3, and the anniversary edition does not establish a matching four-player local mode. Do not buy those versions expecting the co-op arrangement explicitly offered by Legends and Retold.
Which edition should you buy?
Digital purchase
Ubisoft maintains official pages for digital versions of Rayman Legends, Rayman Origins, Rayman 2, Rayman 3, Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition, and Rayman Legends Retold. Use the page for the exact game and platform you own, and read the edition name rather than relying on a store thumbnail.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Retold Launch Edition
The boxed Rayman Legends Retold Launch Edition contains the base game, Origins: Enhanced Edition, a printed map, three lithographs, and a slipcase. It suits buyers who want physical presentation and collectibles as well as the software. Confirm that the listing specifically says “Launch Edition”; a standard digital or physical listing may not include those extras.
Cloud options
Ubisoft lists GeForce Now and Blacknut among the platforms for Retold. Cloud availability can depend on the service’s current catalogue, region, and account requirements, so check the service listing immediately before subscribing or buying for streaming.
A practical buying checklist
- Choose the format. Decide between modern 2D, classic 3D, or original-game preservation before comparing editions.
- Match the platform. For Legends, the listed systems are PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. For Retold, the current product page lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, GeForce Now, and Blacknut.
- Check multiplayer needs. Select Legends or Retold when four-player local co-op is a requirement.
- Read the contents line. Verify whether the listing includes Origins: Enhanced Edition, the Launch Edition physical extras, or the anniversary package’s original-game material.
- Confirm the date for Retold. Ubisoft’s June 2, 2026 announcement and current product page show different dates, so verify the retailer’s shipping or release information before placing a preorder.
- Check the exact edition and region. Store catalogues can separate standard, launch, enhanced, and anniversary products; buy the listing that names the features you expect.
Suggested first-play routes
One modern game, no commitment
Buy Rayman Legends and play it as a standalone 2D introduction. This is the simplest route when you want a proven release on older or current hardware and do not need the newest package.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Two-game 2D progression
Start with Rayman Origins, preferably the Enhanced Edition when that is the version available to you, then play Rayman Legends. This route follows the 2D predecessor into its successor without requiring any knowledge of the 1995 original or the 3D games.
Newest package
Choose Rayman Legends Retold once its availability and date are confirmed for your system. Its package is designed to provide the refreshed Legends experience together with Origins: Enhanced Edition.
Historical route
Begin with Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition if preservation, multiple original versions, bonus levels, and documentary material are your main interests. Move to a modern 2D or classic 3D game afterward according to the style you prefer.
3D-first route
Start with Rayman 2 and then try Rayman 3 if three-dimensional exploration is the feature that attracted you. The 2D games can be played later without disrupting that route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFinal recommendation
Buy Rayman Legends first unless you have a clear reason to choose another package. It is the broadest modern 2D entry, has explicit four-player couch co-op, and is listed for the widest range of platforms in the current information. Choose Rayman Legends Retold for the newer presentation and bundled enhanced predecessor after confirming its retailer date and your system’s compatibility. Pick Origins, Rayman 2, Rayman 3, or the 30th Anniversary Edition only when their specific style or preservation extras match what you want to play.
