Battlefield 6 opened with more than 7 million copies sold in its first three days, according to Electronic Arts, setting a franchise record. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) generated more than $800 million in worldwide consumer sell-through in the same three-day window, according to Activision. Those are not directly interchangeable results: one is units and the other is revenue. Without matching currencies, territories, products and time windows, there is no defensible all-franchise launch-sales ranking. The comparisons below label each figure so you can see what the publishers actually disclosed—and what they did not.

How much did Battlefield 6 sell at launch?
Electronic Arts said Battlefield 6 sold more than 7 million copies during its first three days in 2025. EA described that result as the biggest launch in Battlefield history. The announcement reports copies, not a matching three-day revenue total, so multiplying 7 million by a retail price would create an estimate that the publisher did not provide.
The figure is a launch-window result, not a lifetime sales total. It also should not be read as a physical-only count: the announcement does not split digital and boxed copies. Edition, platform and regional mix can all affect revenue even when two games sell the same number of units.

Did Battlefield 6 outsell Call of Duty?
There is no like-for-like evidence that it outsold Modern Warfare II worldwide. Battlefield 6 has a unit figure—over 7 million copies in three days—while Modern Warfare II has a revenue figure—over $800 million in worldwide consumer sell-through over three days. A copy count cannot be ranked against dollars without prices, editions, discounts, add-on inclusion and a disclosed unit total for the Call of Duty game.
Activision separately announced that Modern Warfare II passed $1 billion in worldwide consumer sell-through by day 10. That is a longer observation window than the three-day Battlefield 6 figure. Both announcements concern consumer sell-through, but they still use different measurement types.

For an apples-to-apples comparison, look for either worldwide copies over the same number of days or worldwide consumer revenue over the same number of days, with the same product inclusions. No such paired disclosure has been established for these two launches.
What Call of Duty launch-sales numbers are actually available?
Call of Duty announcements provide several useful benchmarks, but they mix units, revenue, territories and product bundles. The table keeps those qualifications attached to every number.

The often-cited 6.5 million figure for Modern Warfare 3 is therefore not a worldwide day-one total. Calling it “global” changes the claim. Likewise, the 2009 Modern Warfare 2 result is a North America-and-UK estimate, while the 2019, 2015 and 2018 results include forms of additional content that make game-only comparisons less precise.

Which Call of Duty had the biggest launch?
If “biggest” means the largest publisher-reported three-day worldwide consumer-revenue figure in this set, Modern Warfare II (2022) leads with more than $800 million. If it means copies, the available records do not supply a complete, standardized all-time Call of Duty ranking. Modern Warfare 3’s 6.5 million units are limited to North America and the UK, and the global unit totals for Modern Warfare II and several newer entries are not disclosed in the cited announcements.

Battlefield 3 sold 5 million units in its first week, according to Electronic Arts’ 2011 announcement. Battlefield 6’s more than 7 million copies arrived in three days, so the newer number is higher even before considering that its measurement window is shorter. That supports EA’s franchise-record description, but it is not a controlled comparison of identical launch periods, pricing or platform distribution.
Do not infer a Battlefield 6 revenue total from the Battlefield 3 unit result, either. Battlefield 3’s announcement gives an estimated global consumer sell-through unit figure, while the Battlefield 6 announcement gives a three-day copy count without a corresponding dollar figure.
Why are Halo, Destiny and Apex figures easy to misread?
Other shooter franchises show why launch headlines need definitions. A large number can represent software revenue, hardware bundles, retailer inventory, consumer purchases or player accounts—each answers a different question.
Halo 4
Microsoft reported more than $220 million in worldwide sales revenue during Halo 4’s first 24 hours. A separate $300 million week-one statement was a projection, not the actual first-day result. The $220 million figure is therefore the relevant reported opening number in this comparison.

Halo 5: Guardians
Microsoft reported more than $400 million in the first week for Halo 5: Guardians, explicitly covering games plus hardware. It cannot be placed beside a game-only software total as though every dollar came from copies of Halo 5.
Destiny
Activision reported more than $325 million in worldwide consumer sell-through during Destiny’s first five days. It also publicized more than $500 million on day one, but that separate figure counted sell-in to retailers and first parties. Sell-in is inventory supplied to commercial partners; it is not the same as consumers buying $500 million of software on launch day.
Apex Legends
Electronic Arts and Respawn said the free-to-play Apex Legends reached more than 10 million players in its first 72 hours. Players are an audience-reach measure, not paid game copies or launch revenue. A free-to-play launch can have enormous player numbers without producing a comparable premium-game sales figure.
Did Battlefield beat Call of Duty in 2025?
In a distinct market measure, yes: reporting attributed to Circana placed Battlefield 6 first in US calendar-year 2025 tracked full-game dollar sales, while Black Ops 7 ranked fifth. That is evidence of Battlefield leading that particular US annual chart, not proof that its three-day global copy count exceeded Black Ops 7’s.

Black Ops 7 was available through Game Pass, and Battlefield 6 launched earlier; those facts provide context for the annual ranking but do not establish a causal sales effect. A separate Circana report said Battlefield 6 had the highest US first-month full-game dollar sales since Modern Warfare II (2022). “First month,” “calendar year” and “launch weekend” are different periods and should not be merged.

The annual-ranking report is discussed by Video Games Chronicle. Its scope is the United States and tracked full-game dollar sales, not worldwide units.
What is known about Modern Warfare 4’s launch?
As of October 2026, the cited reporting does not establish a comparable Modern Warfare 4 opening total. Activision had not provided hard launch-sales figures in the account covering that game. A reported $40 billion figure refers to lifetime revenue for the Call of Duty franchise, attributed to Xbox leadership; it is not Modern Warfare 4’s opening weekend.
For the same reason, Guinness’ record of more than 500 million cumulative Call of Duty copies, based on an Activision Blizzard statement recorded in 2024, cannot identify the launch of any individual title. Lifetime franchise totals answer a different question from first-day or first-three-day sales.

- Name the exact game and year. Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Modern Warfare II (2022) are different releases.
- Identify the metric. Copies, consumer sell-through dollars, sell-in, hardware revenue and players are not interchangeable.
- Match the observation window. Twenty-four hours, three days, five days, one week, one month and a calendar year produce different rankings.
- State the territory. North America and the UK is not the same as worldwide, and a US Circana chart is not a global launch result.
- Check product inclusions. DLC packs, season passes and hardware can be included in a publisher’s total.
- Keep subscription access in context. A game offered through a subscription can have a different purchase pattern from a premium-only release.

Applying those rules leaves a precise conclusion: Battlefield 6 owns the clearest modern Battlefield unit benchmark, while Modern Warfare II owns the largest disclosed three-day worldwide Call of Duty revenue figure in the set above. The evidence does not support one universal shooter-launch leaderboard.

The comparisons prioritize publisher-confirmed figures, then preserve the original title, year, territory, metric and time window. Entries were included when they illuminate a real comparison—units versus dollars, consumer sell-through versus sell-in, software versus hardware, or paid purchases versus free-to-play reach—rather than because a large number could be made to look comparable.

Are Battlefield 6’s 7 million launch copies all physical discs?
No split between physical and digital copies is provided in EA’s launch announcement. The safest reading is total copies reported by the publisher, without assigning a format or regional breakdown.
Why can’t a game’s revenue figure be converted into launch copies?
The necessary inputs are missing: average selling price, regional pricing, deluxe-edition mix, discounts and any included add-ons. Even a correct list price would not represent what every buyer paid or reveal how much of the total came from bundled content.
Does a Game Pass launch count as a sale in annual rankings?
Subscription access can change how many people purchase a title directly, while chart methodologies may track full-game dollar sales rather than access or playtime. That is why Black Ops 7’s Game Pass availability is context for the 2025 US ranking, not a unit-sales adjustment.
