For EA’s 2017 Star Wars Battlefront II, the most defensible starting point is your monitor’s native resolution, the High preset and DirectX 12 disabled. Restart after changing the API, then compare the same scene before changing one graphics control at a time. This is a baseline for making your own trade-offs, not a guaranteed universal optimum: historical testing found DX12 slower and less consistent on two mid-range GPUs, while NVIDIA’s period campaign figures varied substantially by resolution and graphics card.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
High preset with DX11 Balanced image quality and predictable frame pacing Native resolution; High; Enable DirectX 12 Off Windows PC Oct 2026
Lower preset with one-setting tuning More FPS headroom on hardware near the minimum or recommended tier Medium or Low, then adjust shadows, lighting, effects, post-process or ambient occlusion individually Windows PC Oct 2026
DX12 comparison mode Players who specifically need the DX12-only dynamic-resolution option in the documented test Enable DirectX 12 On; restart; compare average FPS and frame-time consistency against DX11 Windows PC Oct 2026

What settings should I start with?

Use the High preset at native resolution with DX12 off, then tune toward your frame-rate target. EA lists Low, Medium, High and Ultra presets, but neither the preset names nor the minimum PC specification promise a particular FPS.

  1. Launch the game and open Home → Options → Video.
  2. Set the display resolution to the monitor’s native resolution. Lower it only when the GPU cannot maintain the desired frame rate, because this changes image sharpness as well as performance.
  3. Choose High as the initial preset. It gives you a repeatable visual baseline before individual controls are changed.
  4. Set Enable DirectX 12 to Off, apply the change and restart the game.
  5. Record FPS in the same map, mission section or comparable camera position. Multiplayer matches are not perfectly repeatable because other players alter the workload.
  6. If performance misses your target, lower the preset or change one control, repeat the same scene and keep the change only if its image-quality cost is acceptable.

Keep texture quality as high as your available video memory and system stability allow. The supplied evidence does not establish a universal VRAM cutoff or a fixed FPS gain for any individual toggle, so avoid treating an online “best settings” list as a measured rule for every PC.

How do I switch between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12?

For the stability-first configuration, disable DX12 in the game’s video menu and restart. EA’s historical troubleshooting guidance specifically addresses micro-stuttering and other performance issues that some players saw with DX12.

Normal in-game switch

  1. Open Home → Options → Video.
  2. Set Enable DirectX 12 to Off.
  3. Confirm the change and restart Battlefront II.

EA community administrator EA_David wrote, “We’re aware that some players using Direct X 12 may see micro-stuttering or other performance issues.” That forum guidance is historical, so it should not be read as proof that every current driver and GPU has the same problem. The original troubleshooting post is available at EA’s forum.

If DX12 prevents the game from launching

Back up the configuration file before editing it. In DocumentsSTAR WARS Battlefront IIsettingsBootOptions, change GstRender.EnableDx12 1 to GstRender.EnableDx12 0, save the file and try launching again. This is EA’s documented recovery path; the backup lets you restore the previous value if another problem appears.

Should I use DX11 or DX12 in Battlefront II?

Start with DX11 when stable frame pacing matters more than experimenting with DX12 features. Tom’s Hardware reported lower average FPS and worse frame-time variance with DX12 than DX11 on its GTX 1060 6GB and RX 580 8GB test systems, while its documented dynamic-resolution option was available only under DX12 in that test.

API choice What the evidence supports When to choose it Trade-off
DX11 EA’s historical fallback when DX12 stutters; the safer baseline for comparing settings Stutter, hitching or inconsistent frame times are your main complaint May not expose the DX12-only dynamic-resolution option described in the historical test
DX12 Worth a local comparison if you need that option or your hardware behaves better with it Your own repeatable scene shows equal or better pacing and the game remains stable Historical GTX 1060 and RX 580 results were slower with greater frame-time variation

Do not combine those results with a different GPU, driver, map or game mode and call the outcome universal. Run both APIs in the same scene, at the same resolution and preset, and judge smoothness as well as the displayed average FPS.

Which graphics settings should I lower first?

There is no cited contemporary cross-GPU ranking that assigns a universal FPS cost to each Battlefront II toggle. Use the controls as a sequence of image-quality decisions rather than assuming that one particular setting always gives the largest gain.

Preset-first adjustment

  • High to Medium: the quickest broad reduction when you need more headroom and do not want to tune several controls.
  • Medium to Low: a larger visual compromise for a PC close to the minimum tier or a strict high-FPS target.
  • High to Ultra: reserve this for a GPU that maintains your target in the actual map or mission you play; EA’s minimum and recommended specifications do not guarantee smooth Ultra play.

Individual controls

The documented menu includes shadow, lighting, effects, post-process and ambient-occlusion controls, alongside texture, mesh, terrain, filtering and anti-aliasing. Lower one of those, replay the same scene, and note both the frame-rate change and the visible loss in detail. Keep textures higher than other settings when video-memory capacity and stability permit, but do not invent a specific “safe” VRAM number for every card.

Motion blur, field of view and cinematic effects are also documented controls. Change them for clarity, comfort or preference; the available evidence does not establish a guaranteed FPS boost from disabling any one of them.

How can I measure FPS and frame-time consistency fairly?

Use a repeatable workload and the same counter for each comparison. An average FPS number alone can hide hitching, so watch for uneven delivery as well as the headline average.

  1. Select a campaign section or a repeatable practice scenario when possible. Campaign results should not be presented as multiplayer guarantees.
  2. Keep resolution, preset, API, camera position and background applications unchanged for the first comparison.
  3. Record a short run with DX11, then repeat it with DX12 or after changing one setting.
  4. Use a counter available on your installation. EA documents PerfOverlay.DrawFps 1 for compatible Frostbite-game consoles and also points to Steam and Windows counter options. The command is not evidence that Battlefront II exposes every counter described for other Frostbite or Battlefield menus.
  5. Repeat a change if the result is close to the margin of normal variation. Live multiplayer matches cannot be perfectly controlled because player actions and match state change the workload.

Tom’s Hardware explicitly cautioned that other players affect the workload in multiplayer. Treat vendor and publication figures as examples from their stated methods, not as a promise for your PC.

What PC hardware does Battlefront II require?

EA’s current requirements page, verified in 2026, lists the following publisher specifications. They describe compatibility tiers, not guaranteed FPS at a particular preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Tier Operating system Memory Graphics card API and storage
Minimum 64-bit Windows 10 8GB RAM GeForce GTX 660 2GB or Radeon HD 7850 2GB Compatible DirectX 11 card; 60GB storage
Recommended Windows 10 or later 16GB RAM GeForce GTX 1060 3GB or Radeon RX 480 4GB DirectX 11.1-compatible card; 60GB storage

See the complete CPU alternatives and current wording on EA’s Battlefront II page. EA cautions that minimum specifications do not guarantee good performance at maximum settings. A system meeting the recommended tier is a more sensible starting point for High settings, but it still is not an FPS guarantee.

What those tiers mean for upgrades

  • Memory: 8GB meets the listed minimum; 16GB is EA’s recommended amount. Additional RAM cannot compensate for an unsupported or overloaded GPU.
  • Graphics memory: the named cards have 2GB at minimum and 3GB or 4GB in the recommended tier. Texture quality should be matched to the card’s available video memory and stability rather than to an assumed universal threshold.
  • Storage: reserve 60GB. An SSD can improve loading and general system responsiveness, but no cited evidence demonstrates that changing to an SSD is a Battlefront II FPS cure.
  • Compatibility: check the card’s power requirements, physical fit and driver support before buying a used or replacement component. EA’s free manufacturer-driver route should be tried before paid driver-management software.

What FPS do published Battlefront II results show?

Published numbers are useful for scale only when their publisher, game mode, resolution, settings and hardware remain attached to them. The following figures come from separate historical methods and must not be averaged together.

Source and context Hardware and settings Reported result
NVIDIA, 2017 campaign test GTX 1060 at 1920×1080, High 72 FPS average
NVIDIA, 2017 campaign test GTX 1070 at 2560×1440 Over 66 FPS average
NVIDIA, 2017 campaign test GTX 1080 Ti at 3840×2160 55 FPS average
PCGamesN historical review, updated 2021 Its stated i5/GTX 1060/8GB test machine, Ultra 116 FPS average
PCGamesN historical review, updated 2021 The same stated test machine, Medium 132 FPS average

The NVIDIA figures are period vendor tests, and the PCGamesN figures come from that publication’s own stated machine and method. Different campaign sections, drivers, CPU limits and measurement procedures explain why these numbers should illustrate variability rather than predict what every GTX 1060 or similar card will deliver today.

How should I choose settings for 1080p, 1440p or 4K?

Choose a target frame rate first, then work from the High/DX11 baseline and reduce quality only when the same-scene comparison shows that you need the headroom. Resolution changes affect both GPU load and image clarity, so a lower resolution is not interchangeable with lowering shadows or post-processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1080p

Use native 1920×1080 when that is your monitor’s resolution. NVIDIA reported 72 FPS average at 1080p High on a GTX 1060 in a 2017 campaign test, but that figure is not a current guarantee or a multiplayer result. If your card is below the recommended tier, start at Medium rather than assuming High will hold a chosen refresh rate.

1440p

At 2560×1440, NVIDIA reported over 66 FPS average on a GTX 1070 in its 2017 campaign testing. Use that as a historical reference point, then verify your own scene; lower the preset or selected controls if frame pacing misses your target.

4K

NVIDIA reported 55 FPS average at 3840×2160 on a GTX 1080 Ti in the same period campaign material. A 4K target therefore demands substantially more GPU capacity than the EA recommended card, and reducing resolution or quality may be necessary for a higher refresh target.

What should I do if FPS stays low after lowering settings?

If Low or Medium still performs poorly, the cause may be outside the preset. Work through these checks before buying software or hardware.

  1. Confirm the dedicated GPU: verify that the game is using the intended discrete graphics adapter rather than an integrated device.
  2. Install a suitable manufacturer driver: use the GPU maker’s official driver route first. EA’s PC graphics troubleshooting guidance recommends checking drivers and system conditions.
  3. Close competing processes: reduce background applications that consume CPU, memory, storage bandwidth or overlays.
  4. Recheck API mode: if DX12 is stuttering or producing inconsistent frame times, return to DX11 and restart.
  5. Compare against EA’s requirements: check 64-bit Windows, RAM, GPU model, API compatibility and the 60GB storage requirement.
  6. Separate a game problem from a Windows-wide slowdown: an optional driver-management utility may help organize driver updates, while a Windows repair utility is a narrower diagnostic choice. Neither replaces the DX11 check or proves a game-specific FPS increase; the utility vendor itself says no software automatically repairs every crashing application.

EA’s general FPS-counter guidance is available at its support page. Use it to establish whether the issue is sustained low rendering performance or intermittent frame-time spikes.

How do I avoid misleading “best settings” advice?

  • Do not treat EA’s minimum card as a promise of smooth Ultra play.
  • Do not transfer a campaign average directly to a 64-player or otherwise busy multiplayer match.
  • Do not quote a vendor’s 2017 result as a current driver benchmark.
  • Do not assume DX12 is faster because it is newer; compare it with DX11 on the same workload.
  • Do not change several controls at once if you need to know which compromise produced the result.
  • Do not claim a fixed FPS gain for shadows, ambient occlusion, motion blur or another toggle without a measurement conducted under matching conditions.

What is the practical recommendation?

Set native resolution, High and DX12 off; restart; then measure a repeatable scene. If the result is below your target, move to Medium or Low and tune shadow, lighting, effects, post-process, ambient occlusion, mesh, terrain, filtering and anti-aliasing one at a time while preserving the highest texture quality your video memory can handle. Test DX12 only as a deliberate comparison—especially if you need its documented dynamic-resolution option—and keep it only when your own frame-time and stability results justify the trade-off.

FAQ

Can an 8GB RAM PC launch Battlefront II reliably?

8GB is the amount EA lists for the minimum configuration, so it meets the published memory requirement. It does not establish a smooth Ultra experience, and background applications can reduce the memory available to the game; 16GB is EA’s recommended amount.

Does installing the game on an SSD increase FPS?

No cited result demonstrates a direct Battlefront II FPS increase from an SSD. An SSD is relevant to the 60GB installation requirement and can improve loading behavior, but graphics settings and GPU capacity remain the performance decisions documented here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can two GTX 1060 results look so different?

The published figures use different reviewers, years, test procedures, game sections, resolutions and presets. A GTX 1060 label alone does not identify the CPU limit, driver, memory configuration or scene, so those numbers cannot be combined into a single expected FPS value.

Is a DirectX 11.1 card required if the game starts in DirectX 11?

EA lists a compatible DirectX 11 card in the minimum tier and a DirectX 11.1-compatible card in the recommended tier. Starting successfully does not prove that a system meets every recommended capability, so check the exact GPU and driver support rather than relying on the API toggle alone.

What if the FPS counter looks high but the game still feels uneven?

An average can conceal frame-time spikes, which is why the DX12 comparison should include consistency as well as the displayed average. Repeat the same scene, watch for hitching, and prefer the API and settings combination that delivers steadier delivery on your PC.
