The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller works only with Nintendo Switch 2. The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but that does not make every game compatible with either controller: Nintendo specifically says neither Pro Controller works with Nintendo Switch Sports. In games that offer Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, those features are a separate reason to keep the Joy-Con 2 included with the console.
Which Pro Controller works with which Switch?
The names are easy to mix up, but the compatibility direction is not interchangeable. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is for Switch 2 only; Nintendo describes it as usable “Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, by contrast, can connect wirelessly to Switch 2. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Pro Controller product page identifies the newer model, while its Switch 2 accessory compatibility guidance covers the older controller.

That means an original Switch owner considering a controller for a new console should first check the label and generation on the device. If you already own the original Pro Controller, it can be a useful Switch 2 controller rather than an obsolete accessory. If you are buying the Switch 2 Pro Controller, do not expect to use it with the original Switch.
Also separate three questions that are often confused: whether the console can run a game, whether that game accepts a particular controller, and whether a specific mode or feature requires a different input method. Nintendo says compatible original Switch games can run on Switch 2, while some software may be unsupported or not fully compatible. That console-level software qualification does not establish that a game supports either Pro Controller.

Which games work with a Switch 2 Pro Controller?
Controller support depends on the game and, sometimes, its mode. Nintendo’s published guidance confirms a firm exception for Nintendo Switch Sports, and identifies Joy-Con 2 mouse controls in certain Switch 2 game features; it does not provide a universal roster of every compatible game.

What the Nintendo Switch Sports exception means
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ explicitly says that Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with that game. This is a game-specific restriction, not a statement that either controller fails to connect to Switch 2. Do not infer support from the Pro Controller’s motion controls: the game’s own controller requirements are what matter.

The FAQ lists Joy-Con, Joy-Con 2, and original Joy-Con with a Leg Strap among the supported arrangements, depending on the sport. Joy-Con 2 does not fit the original Leg Strap, so a player checking a leg-strap activity needs to distinguish the Joy-Con generation as well as the controller type.
Mouse-control features are not the same as full-game support
Nintendo describes mouse controls for added minigames in Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV and as an option in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Those mouse features use Joy-Con 2; the Pro Controller does not provide that Joy-Con 2 mouse input. This establishes a limitation on the feature, not a blanket ban on using a Pro Controller for every other mode or part of either game.

The Jamboree upgrade pack requires the original Super Mario Party Jamboree game. Selected video features also call for a compatible USB-C camera. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition games page describes these game-specific features. Check the exact edition and activity you plan to play rather than treating the title’s mouse or camera feature as a universal controller requirement.
How to check an unlisted game
- Open the game’s current Nintendo product page and look for its supported controller icons and any stated accessory requirements.
- Check whether the requirement applies to the whole game or only a named mode, minigame, or optional control feature.
- If the game is an original Switch title, confirm separately that its software is supported on Switch 2; backward compatibility does not by itself confirm controller support.
- For a game with updates or changing online modes, check its current instructions before relying on an older compatibility answer.
These checks avoid a common mismatch: a game can launch on the console while a particular activity still expects a different controller. The available Nintendo sources do not establish a complete all-games Pro Controller list, so a longer list of supposed universal approvals would be unreliable.

For the new controller, Nintendo documents two pairing routes: connect it by USB-C, or use the console’s controller-order screen and the controller’s SYNC button. The included USB-C charging cable can be used for the wired route.
- Connect by cable: Plug the supplied USB-C cable into the controller and directly into a powered-on Switch 2. If the console is docked, you can instead connect the controller to the dock.
- Pair wirelessly from the console: On Switch 2, open Controllers → Change Grip/Order.
- Start pairing: Hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second and follow the console’s on-screen pairing flow.
Nintendo’s controller pairing instructions cover the pairing process. If pairing does not complete, check that the console is powered on, return to the Change Grip/Order screen for the wireless route, and hold SYNC for the stated duration. The supplied cable is also a direct alternative to wireless pairing.

For charging, Nintendo documents charging through the Switch 2 dock with the supplied cable, or use of an appropriate cable and a compatible 5 V, 1.5 A (7.5 W) adapter approved for your country. The electrical rating is Nintendo’s specified charging requirement, not a reason to buy a particular third-party charger. The included cable means an additional cable is not a prerequisite.
What features are specific to the Switch 2 Pro Controller?
The Switch 2 model adds several functions beyond basic stick-and-button input. Nintendo lists HD Rumble 2, motion controls, amiibo functionality, a Capture button, a GameChat C button, remappable GL and GR buttons, and a four-pole CTIA-standard 3.5 mm audio jack. It ships with a USB-C charging cable. These are specifications for the Switch 2 model; do not assume the older Switch Pro Controller has the same listed hardware.

The GL and GR buttons can be remapped, which makes them useful for assigning supported inputs to the controller’s rear buttons. A wired headset should have a four-pole CTIA 3.5 mm connector for the controller’s audio jack. Connector standard alone is not a guarantee that every third-party headset microphone, headset feature, or charging stand will work, so confirm compatibility for a specific accessory before buying it.
GameChat has separate service requirements from the controller itself. Nintendo’s product information associates it with account, internet, membership, and geographic availability conditions; verify the current terms for your location and account before treating the C button as access to an unrestricted service.

Which older accessories work with Switch 2?
Some original Switch accessories remain useful, but physical fit and charging are separate from wireless controller pairing. Nintendo’s accessory compatibility guidance distinguishes the items that carry over from those that do not.
- Original Joy-Con: They can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but cannot attach to the console or charge from it.
- Original Joy-Con grip: It does not fit Joy-Con 2. Do not assume an accessory shaped for the original controllers will fit the newer pair.
- Original Switch dock: It does not work with Switch 2.
- GameCube controller adapter: It works through the Switch 2 dock in TV mode.
These are system accessory facts, not extra parts required by the Pro Controller. Pairing an older controller wirelessly is not the same as attaching it to the console, and a dock or adapter compatibility statement should not be read as a guarantee for unnamed third-party products.
Should you keep an original Pro Controller or get the Switch 2 model?
If the original Switch Pro Controller is already in your collection, its documented wireless compatibility with Switch 2 makes it a reasonable controller to keep for games that support it. The newer model is the one to choose when its specified Switch 2 features matter to you, particularly the C, GL/GR, Capture, audio-jack, and HD Rumble 2 functions. For Nintendo Switch Sports, neither Pro Controller is the answer; for supported mouse-control features, Joy-Con 2 is the relevant input.
Switch 2 includes a Joy-Con 2 pair, so a player interested only in those mouse features does not necessarily need to buy another pair. The useful decision is therefore not simply “old versus new”: keep the original Pro Controller if you have one and the game accepts it, choose the Switch 2 model for its newer specified controls, and retain Joy-Con 2 for activities that call for its distinct input method.
