Start with Settings > Gameplay > Contrast Corridor, then simplify the scene in Settings > Visuals and tune Settings > Colors so note types differ by texture as well as color. Use the Andromeda stage, disable Hit Particles and Spawn Indicator, and leave Note Jump Speed at the chart’s normal value until contrast and clutter are under control. If only custom tracks remain difficult to parse, verify that the map and your game are on the same custom-content version before changing timing.
A readable baseline you can apply in a few minutes
These changes address the most common causes of unreadable Synth Riders charts without altering the intended rhythm:

- Open Settings > Gameplay and enable Contrast Corridor.
- Open Settings > Visuals and turn Hit Particles off. Turn Spawn Indicator off as well.
- Choose the Andromeda stage. Synth Riders developer Wirrel identifies it as a low-clutter option because it has no floor lights.
- Open Settings > Colors. Give every note type a texture that remains recognizable without depending only on hue, then choose colors that separate clearly from the background in your headset.
- Keep Note Jump Speed at the map’s normal value while you evaluate readability.
- If the problem occurs only in custom content, check the map’s version and folder placement before changing any visual setting.
This sequence isolates visibility from timing. Changing several variables at once can make a chart seem better while hiding the actual cause of the problem.

What Contrast Corridor changes
Contrast Corridor is the clearest single switch when notes disappear into stage scenery. The option is under Settings > Gameplay. When enabled, it displays a dark corridor along the line of play. Official patch notes describe it as a way to improve visibility on some stages.

The corridor does not change note timing, hit windows, or the chart itself. It adds a darker visual lane behind incoming objects, so the edge of a note is easier to separate from animated backgrounds and lighting effects. It is particularly useful on official stages with bright floor lighting or color shifts, and on custom maps that use busy scenery behind the note lanes.
When to leave it enabled
- Notes blend into a stage during their approach but become visible at the last moment.
- One side of the play area is harder to read because of localized lighting.
- Obstacle and note colors look similar to the environment.
When it may not solve the problem
If notes remain hard to identify inside the corridor, the issue is probably note differentiation, particles, stage lighting, or a version mismatch rather than background separation. Move to the controls below instead of increasing speed or repeatedly restarting the same map.
Use colors and textures without relying on hue alone
Settings > Colors provides separate controls for note appearance. The game supports color previews, RGB hex entry, solid note colors, and a different note texture for each note type. That texture option matters for players who cannot reliably distinguish hues in motion or whose display makes similar colors merge.

A practical color workflow
- Preview each note type in the headset, not only in a flat menu view.
- Choose a pair of colors with a clear lightness difference, such as one darker and one brighter, rather than two colors that differ only by hue.
- Assign visibly different textures to the note types. Use shape or surface detail as a second signal so recognition survives dim scenes, glare, or color-vision limitations.
- Use the RGB hex fields when a particular shade is too bright, washed out, or close to the stage palette.
- Check solid-note options if gradients or animated treatments make the note boundary difficult to see.
There is no universally correct color pair: headset brightness, display contrast, room lighting, and the chosen stage all affect perception. The reliable test is whether you can identify both note types during the approach without waiting for them to reach the hit area.

Color choices for obstacles and controllers
Wirrel’s low-clutter guidance also recommends darker controller and obstacle colors. Darker obstacles are less likely to compete with bright notes, while subdued controller colors keep hand movement from becoming a second source of visual noise. Adjust these after note textures and note colors are distinct; notes should remain the strongest visual signal.
Remove particles and indicators that mask incoming notes
Under Settings > Visuals, disable Hit Particles and Spawn Indicator. Wirrel specifically lists both as part of the developer’s “best lo-fi settings for visual comfort.”
Hit Particles
Hit effects occur where you have just interacted with a note. On dense streams, a burst can overlap the next object or create a bright patch that competes with an approaching note. Turning the effect off preserves feedback through sound, controller response, and the note’s successful-hit behavior while removing that local flash.

The spawn indicator marks where an object enters the play field. It can be useful when learning a chart, but on fast or heavily populated patterns it adds another moving element to track. Disabling it gives priority to the notes themselves.

Immersive Mode and Rails Counter
Try Immersive Mode if interface elements or peripheral overlays pull your eyes away from the lanes. If the Rails Counter distracts you, turn it off. These controls do not alter chart data; they reduce information competing for attention.
Why the Andromeda stage helps
Stage lighting can make an otherwise well-designed chart difficult to parse. Wirrel specifically recommends Andromeda because it has no floor lights. Removing moving light sources lowers background motion and reduces the chance that a note’s silhouette will be lost as it crosses the floor or lower edge of the play area.
Use a darker, simpler stage when diagnosing a map. Once the chart is readable, you can switch back to a more elaborate stage if you prefer its atmosphere. If readability collapses only after that change, the stage—not the chart’s difficulty—is the variable to adjust.

Note Jump Speed controls how quickly notes travel toward you. A faster setting compresses the visible approach: more objects can appear in a shorter interval, leaving less time to identify patterns. That can make a dense custom chart feel visually overwhelming even when every note has adequate color contrast.

Official notes list a 3× Note Jump Speed modifier and explain that custom-difficulty Note Jump Speed interacts with score eligibility. Because speed can affect scoring conditions, do not use it as the first fix for poor visibility.
A safe order for speed adjustments
- Restore the map’s normal Note Jump Speed.
- Enable Contrast Corridor and simplify visuals.
- Confirm that note types are distinguishable by texture and contrast.
- Play a short section and identify whether the remaining problem is recognition or reaction time.
- Only then experiment with speed, recording the original value so you can restore it.
If the notes are clearly visible but arrive too quickly to process, that is a timing-density issue. If they are still blending into the background, changing speed will not create contrast and may make the chart harder to read.

A custom chart can look like a visual-settings failure when it is actually incompatible with the game version. Version 3 guidance states that custom content must be placed under the SynthRidersUC folder and that only custom stages updated for Version 3 work with Version 3. Steam also provides a legacy beta channel for Version 2.
Compatibility checks
- Confirm whether the game is running Version 3 or the Version 2 legacy beta.
- Check that the custom stage was updated for that same version.
- Verify that the content is under the exact
SynthRidersUCfolder expected by Version 3. - Test the map with the default stage and normal Note Jump Speed before making further visual changes.
A mismatch can produce missing elements, unexpected effects, or behavior that resembles unreadable note placement. Fixing the version and folder first prevents you from compensating for broken content with increasingly aggressive visual settings.

Troubleshoot by symptom
“I can see the notes, but I cannot tell the types apart.”
Return to Settings > Colors. Increase lightness separation, select different textures, and test solid colors. Do not depend on red-versus-green or another hue-only distinction.
“The notes vanish against one particular stage.”
Enable Contrast Corridor and switch temporarily to Andromeda. If the chart becomes readable, the stage lighting is the cause. Keep the corridor or use the simpler stage for that track.
“Effects flash over the next note.”
Disable Hit Particles first, then Spawn Indicator. If the remaining distraction is an overlay rather than a note effect, test Immersive Mode and disable Rails Counter.

“The chart feels impossible after I changed speed.”
Restore the map’s normal Note Jump Speed. Faster travel reduces parsing time and may interact with custom-difficulty score eligibility; it is not a general visibility enhancement.
“Only custom maps have broken or confusing visuals.”
Check the Version 3 folder requirement, the map’s update status, and whether Steam is using the Version 2 legacy beta. Test a compatible map before judging your color or contrast settings.
How to test changes without guessing
- Pick a short, familiar section of the difficult track.
- Change one category at a time: corridor, colors/textures, visual effects, stage, then speed.
- Replay the same section from the same starting point.
- Judge whether you can identify the next note earlier, not merely whether the scene looks prettier.
- Keep the change only if it improves recognition without creating a new distraction.
No controlled numeric measurement has been published for how much each option improves readability, so treat these settings as practical adjustments rather than guaranteed percentage gains. The strongest evidence is the developer’s explicit low-clutter recommendation and the official descriptions of Contrast Corridor and per-note textures; your headset and the individual map still determine the final result.
