For most first-time players, start with Tomb Raider I–III Remastered; if you want to continue, Tomb Raider IV–VI Remastered covers the next three games. Both collections let you switch between updated and original-style visuals and between modern and classic-style controls. Choose an original release when your priority is a particular historical version—not simply the classic look. These are two separate collections, not one six-game purchase.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key content or distinction | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomb Raider I–III Remastered | Starting the series | The first three adventures, plus expansions and secret levels | Nov 2026 |
| Tomb Raider IV–VI Remastered | Continuing the series or exploring The Angel of Darkness | The Last Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness | Nov 2026 |
| An original release | Experiencing a specific historical build | Depends on the game, platform and release; there is no single version that represents every original | Nov 2026 |
The short answer is that a newcomer usually has the clearest path through I–III Remastered, while someone who has already played those adventures—or specifically wants to explore the later trilogy—should look at IV–VI Remastered. An original copy is a more focused choice: it makes sense when the exact historical release is part of what you want to experience. These are recommendations based on each collection’s documented contents and options, not a publisher’s ranking of the games.

Use this comparison to decide what matters most before you buy. A familiar-looking image, a classic-style control setting and an original release are related ideas, but they are not interchangeable. The collection name, game and platform are all part of the decision.
What is the difference between the remasters and the original games?
The remasters package the games with selectable presentation and control options; an original release is a particular version tied to its platform and release history. A remaster’s classic-style settings can evoke the older presentation and movement, but they do not establish that its code, content or behavior is identical to an original release.

Visuals and controls
The collections offer updated visuals as well as an original-style presentation, and modern controls as well as classic-style controls. That gives players room to choose how they want the games to look and feel without having to track down an old copy just to try a classic-style setup. The options should be understood as settings within the remaster, not as a guarantee of exact historical reproduction.
These are two different kinds of choice. The graphics option changes the presentation; the control option changes how you approach movement. You can choose an original-style look without concluding that you must use classic-style controls, or try the classic-style controls while keeping the updated presentation. That flexibility is useful if you want to explore the older movement conventions but are not committed to recreating every part of an earlier release.
There is no universal best setting established by the available product information. If your aim is simply to play the adventures, select the combination that suits you. If your aim is to compare historical versions, record which specific original release and platform you mean; otherwise, “classic” can refer only to a mode in the remaster, not to a verified match with one original build.
Content is divided between two purchases
I–III Remastered brings together the first three adventures with their expansions and secret levels. IV–VI Remastered contains The Last Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness. Check the full collection title before buying: choosing one does not mean you have bought all six games.
This distinction is easy to miss when a search, store page or physical listing uses the franchise name prominently. Read the complete product title and its contents rather than relying on “Tomb Raider Remastered” alone. The first collection is the one described as containing the first three adventures with expansions and secret levels; the second names the three later games. The collections are separate choices, so a plan to play all six means checking both product listings, not assuming that one purchase includes the other half.
Which version should you choose for your first playthrough?
For a first trip through the series, choose I–III Remastered. Its visual and control options let you adjust the presentation while playing the original three adventures and their additional content, without making a specific historical release a prerequisite.

If you want to keep going
Choose IV–VI Remastered if you have finished the earlier adventures or are particularly interested in the later games. It is also the relevant collection if The Angel of Darkness is the game you want to investigate; that game’s restoration makes the comparison about more than sharper graphics.
The two collections divide the series into groups of three, but they should not be treated as one interchangeable bundle. If you are continuing after the first collection, check that the second listing names The Last Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness. If you are shopping because of one specific game, use that game’s title to confirm you have the right collection before completing a purchase.

If you are curious about classic movement
Try the remaster’s classic-style controls if part of the appeal is learning the movement conventions associated with the older games. There is no universal best control scheme: the right choice depends on whether you want a more contemporary control option or a classic-style one.
You do not have to acquire an original release just to sample classic-style controls, since the remasters offer that option. But this is a way to try a control style inside the remaster, not evidence that every interaction or behavior exactly matches a chosen original platform version. If you are comparing the feel of a historical edition, specify the release you want to compare against and keep that distinction in mind.
If preservation is your priority
Identify the exact game, platform and release you want before seeking an original. “The original game” can refer to different historical versions, so the remaster’s classic presentation is not a substitute for a specified build when version-level authenticity matters.
There is no single universal original against which all remasters can be judged. A preservation-minded buyer should first decide which game matters, then identify the platform or historical release whose behavior and presentation they want to examine. Only after that does it make sense to assess whether a particular copy or listing matches. A generic listing that says “original” does not settle those questions by itself.
Current original-game digital storefront listings, prices and compatibility are not established here. Availability may depend on region and platform, so check the store and the specific version directly rather than building a plan around an assumed current download. A historical release or a physical product also should not be confused with proof that the same original is available digitally today.

Does classic graphics mode make a remaster identical to an original?
No. It changes the visual presentation, but that setting alone cannot prove that the remaster uses the same binaries, content, behavior or platform-specific details as a given original release.
Aspyr’s developer account says the team set out to use the original source code and engine. That is useful context about the remasters’ foundations, but it does not mean that every part of the finished collections is untouched or identical to every original platform release. The practical distinction is between selecting a classic-style look inside a remaster and playing a particular historical release.
For a casual playthrough, that distinction may not change your choice: the remaster offers both original-style and updated visuals, so you can decide which presentation you prefer. For a historical comparison, it matters. A setting can reproduce an intended style without answering every question about the exact build, platform-specific behavior, content or code. Ask “Which version do I want?” rather than treating “classic graphics” as a complete answer.
The same caution applies to the word “original” in a product description. A particular original release has a date, platform and version history; it is not simply a visual filter. If you are buying for preservation or comparison, verify those details where possible. If you are buying to play the games with a choice of visual style, the remaster’s mode is a practical option without making a claim of exact historical identity.

What should you know about saves and difficulty?
Do not assume that an older-feeling presentation also gives you modern save conveniences. The official classic-play guidance says the classic Tomb Raider games have no autosave or checkpoint system, so players should be prepared to save manually when the game allows it.
That guidance describes the classic games; it is not sufficient to claim that saving works identically across all six remasters, every individual game and every platform. If save behavior is central to your choice, check the instructions for the specific remastered game and platform you plan to play rather than inferring it from the graphics or control setting.
In practical terms, a player accustomed to checkpoints should not assume that a classic presentation setting will preserve progress automatically. Read the game’s instructions and make manual saves when the game allows them. The official guidance is specifically about classic Tomb Raider play; it should not be stretched into a blanket promise about how every remastered title saves on every platform.
This is one reason to separate “I want the old visual or movement style” from “I want all the old practical behavior.” The remasters provide selectable visual and control styles, but the setting names do not tell you everything about saving. Check the title and platform you intend to play, particularly if you are deciding between versions because you prefer a particular save system.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What changes in The Angel of Darkness remaster?
The Angel of Darkness deserves a separate comparison because its remaster includes restoration work, making the choice less straightforward than simply preferring a sharper image. The official restoration account supports discussion of specific restored or altered elements; avoid treating every perceived difference as a confirmed restoration detail unless that account documents it.
If your interest is the game as it appeared in a particular historical release, identify that release and compare it on those terms. If you want to explore the remastered collection and its restoration, IV–VI Remastered is the relevant package. The existence of restoration does not, by itself, establish that every original feature was restored or that every platform’s version is identical.
That makes the choice different from a simple “new graphics or old graphics?” decision. A player drawn to the remaster can investigate the documented restoration in the collection, while a player interested in a specific historical build should seek that release and avoid assuming that the remaster is an untouched copy. The restoration account is the appropriate basis for naming particular changes; where it does not document a detail, do not present an impression as a confirmed feature.
If The Angel of Darkness is your main reason for shopping, check that the product listing is IV–VI Remastered, the collection that includes it. Do not assume that a listing for the first collection contains the game simply because both products carry the Tomb Raider name.

Do updates change what an older review describes?
Yes. A review written for an earlier build may not describe the collection as it stands on a later platform update. The official Tomb Raider announcement for October 2026 says Challenge Mode was added to I–III Remastered; it lists 10 outfits, 25 unlockable abilities and 15 new achievements. Those figures apply to that announcement and collection, not to the 2024 launch build or to IV–VI Remastered.

Those numbers are useful if Challenge Mode is part of your decision, but keep their scope clear: the announcement associates them with I–III Remastered. They are not a description of the original 2024 launch build, a count for IV–VI Remastered, or a guarantee about another collection. In particular, do not use the figures as a reason to assume that the same mode or additions appear in both products.
Aspyr has also documented later changes to both collections. The available information does not establish that every platform has received every update, so check the current build for your platform if a particular change matters to your purchase or playthrough.
Build dates can explain why two reviews seem to describe different products. A review written before an update may accurately describe the version it played, yet omit features added later. Conversely, an announcement of an update does not establish that a particular platform has installed it. Check the current platform-specific version when the presence of a change is important, and read older impressions with their publication date in mind.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAre there physical editions, and what do they include?
An official physical-edition announcement supports the existence of a physical edition of Tomb Raider I–III Remastered. It does not establish current stock or price, so confirm the platform and listing details with the seller before buying.
If you prefer owning a physical copy, the clearest candidate described here is the I–III Remastered physical edition. Match the listed platform to your hardware, check the exact collection title, and confirm the seller’s current availability and price. An announcement establishes that a physical edition exists; it does not tell you that a particular retailer has stock today or that every listing is for the platform you own.
The official announcement for the Evercade Tomb Raider Collection 1 describes a cartridge containing two games. It is a limited original-style option, not a six-game collection; check that you have compatible hardware before considering it. Do not assume that an IV–VI Remastered listing is a physical release without verifying the platform-specific product and what is on its media.
The Evercade cartridge is therefore a narrower alternative rather than a substitute for either remastered collection. Its announcement says it contains two games, and it requires compatible Evercade hardware; it should not be presented as a complete series package or presumed to work on unrelated systems. If a physical copy of IV–VI Remastered is what you want, verify the exact SKU and media contents for the platform before describing a listing as physical.

- Starting the series: begin with I–III Remastered.
- Continuing through the later games: choose IV–VI Remastered.
- Wanting classic-style movement or visuals: try those options inside the relevant remaster.
- Seeking a historical version: specify the game, platform and release, then look for that original rather than assuming classic-style remaster settings are identical.
- Buying a physical copy: verify the platform, contents and current availability of the exact listing.
A quick decision sequence can make the choice less confusing. First, decide whether you want the first three games or the later three; that identifies the relevant remastered collection. Next, decide whether your priority is a flexible way to play or a particular historical version. If flexibility is enough, the remaster’s selectable visuals and controls give you options. If historical specificity is the point, name the platform and release before searching. Finally, check the product’s full title and current platform details so the listing matches your plan.

Do not let the phrase “classic mode” answer a different question from the one you are asking. It tells you that a classic-style presentation or control option is available, not that all aspects of a historical release have been reproduced. Likewise, an original release is not a single universal thing: its platform and version matter. Keeping those decisions separate is the simplest way to choose without expecting one edition to satisfy every goal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I play the original Tomb Raider games or the remasters?
For most first-time players, start with I–III Remastered, then choose IV–VI Remastered if you want to continue through the six games. Choose an original release when experiencing a particular historical build is your priority, and identify its game, platform and release.
Can I use tank controls in Tomb Raider Remastered?
The collections offer classic-style controls as well as modern controls. Try the classic-style option if you want to explore the older movement conventions; the option is a mode within the remaster, not proof that every behavior matches a specific original release.
Does classic graphics mode make the remaster the original game?
No. The remasters provide an original-style visual presentation, but that does not establish identical code, content, behavior or platform details. For a historical comparison, specify the original game, platform and release.
Are Tomb Raider I–III Remastered and IV–VI Remastered one purchase?
No. They are separate collections. The first contains the first three adventures with expansions and secret levels; the second contains The Last Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness. Check the full product title before buying.
What did the October 2026 Challenge Mode announcement say was added?
The official Tomb Raider announcement lists 10 outfits, 25 unlockable abilities and 15 new achievements. Those figures refer to Challenge Mode for I–III Remastered in that announcement, not to the 2024 launch build or IV–VI Remastered.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do the classic Tomb Raider games have autosaves or checkpoints?
The official classic-play guidance says the classic games have no autosave or checkpoint system, so be prepared to save manually when allowed. That guidance does not establish identical saving behavior across every remastered game and platform; check the instructions for the specific version you plan to play.
Can I buy the original Tomb Raider games digitally right now?
Current original-game storefront listings, prices and compatibility are not established here, and availability can differ by region and platform. Confirm the exact game and platform in the storefront you use before planning a purchase.
Which original Tomb Raider release should a preservation-minded player look for?
Start by naming the game and the platform or historical release you want to preserve; “original” is not one universal build. Then verify that a listing or copy matches those details, rather than relying on a generic original-game label.
Is the Evercade Tomb Raider cartridge compatible with any console?
It is an Evercade cartridge, so you need compatible Evercade hardware. The product announcement describes two games on the cartridge; it does not establish compatibility with other systems or provide a complete hardware-compatibility list.
Is there a physical edition of IV–VI Remastered?
Do not assume a listing is a physical release without verifying its platform-specific product details and what is on its media. Confirm the exact SKU and contents with the seller before buying.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with Tomb Raider I–III Remastered if you are new to the series, and choose IV–VI Remastered to continue or explore The Angel of Darkness. Use the remasters’ visual and control options to find your preferred presentation. Choose an original only when a specific historical release matters to you, and verify the platform, contents, current build and availability of any listing before you buy.
