Choose the drive by the discs you need, then verify Steam Frame support separately. An external USB CD/DVD drive is the practical format match for audio CDs, data CDs and DVDs. Choose a Blu-ray-capable drive only when Blu-ray media is essential. Neither a USB-C plug nor a manufacturer’s compatibility list proves that a drive works on Steam Frame: Valve publishes one rear USB-C 2.0 charging-and-data port, but not its accessory power budget, and no named drive has documented successful operation on a retail Frame.
That distinction matters because four separate gates exist: the disc format, electrical power, whether SteamOS mounts the drive, and whether suitable movie or game software runs. A source-code change adds optical-drive kernel modules in a mirrored repository, but it is not confirmation that those modules shipped in a retail update.

The table compares advertised hardware capabilities, not Frame compatibility. “USB-powered” describes the drive’s design; it does not establish that Frame can supply the current needed for spin-up.
What is the difference between a USB CD/DVD drive and a USB Blu-ray drive?
A CD/DVD drive covers CDs and DVDs but does not advertise Blu-ray reading. A Blu-ray drive adds Blu-ray support and normally retains CD/DVD capability, so it is the broader choice when your library includes more than DVDs.

CD-only use
A CD-only reader or writer is sufficient for audio CDs and CD-ROM software, but no named CD-only model is verified here. If any DVD is in your plans, a combo CD/DVD model avoids that format ceiling without requiring Blu-ray hardware.
CD and DVD use
Verbatim’s 98938 explicitly reads and writes both CD and DVD media. It draws power over USB and includes an adapter from USB-A to USB-C, which addresses connector shape but not SteamOS recognition or Frame’s available output power. The manufacturer also says DVD movie playback requires separate DVD playback software, and its bundled Nero software is for Windows.
CD, DVD and Blu-ray use
Verbatim’s 43888 is advertised as a USB-C, USB-powered Blu-ray writer with CD/DVD/Blu-ray burning software. The product disclosure says playback software is not included. Its marketed Ultra HD 4K capability is a drive feature, not evidence that Steam Frame can decode or display 4K Blu-ray video.
The ASUS BW-16D1X-U illustrates a different design: its specification lists CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and BD-ROM reading and requires a separate 12 V, 3 A adapter. That power arrangement can remove dependence on a host’s USB output, but ASUS’s cited operating-system list does not include SteamOS, so it is not a proven Frame solution.
Can Steam Frame power an external optical drive?
Power is an independent compatibility gate. Valve lists one rear USB-C 2.0 port for charging and data and a maximum charging input of 45 W; the specification does not state how much power that port can deliver to accessories. Charging input must not be treated as an accessory-output rating.
A Steam Community owner reported that a detachable drive would not spin from Frame power and later looked for a powered hub. Their first splitter did not solve the problem. This is one owner’s experience, not a measurement of every Frame or drive, but it demonstrates why a bus-powered product page cannot settle the question.

Bus-powered portable drives
Portable CD/DVD and USB-C Blu-ray drives reduce cable and adapter count, but their startup current still has to come from the host or a powered hub. If the disc never spins, software troubleshooting cannot fix the electrical shortfall.
Drives with their own adapter
A separately powered model, such as the ASUS example, uses a wall adapter specified at 12 V and 3 A. It adds bulk and another outlet, and it still requires a compatible USB data path and operating-system driver. No particular powered hub or adapter arrangement has been validated on a retail Frame.
What a powered USB-C hub can and cannot do
A powered USB-C hub with USB data ports is a reasonable troubleshooting branch when a bus-powered drive fails to spin. It is not a guaranteed fix: the hub must support data, provide suitable downstream power, and work with Frame’s USB-C mode. Treat it as an electrical experiment to check against the exact drive’s requirements, not as a certified accessory.
Does the Frame kernel support USB optical drives yet?
The strongest software evidence is a mirrored kernel-source commit, not a retail-support announcement. Commit b68e4a1 changes arch/arm64/configs/gabe_defconfig to set CONFIG_CDROM=m, CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=m and CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=m.

Valve-tagged developer Gabe Rowe replied to the owner’s discussion, “we will look into this thanks for alerting us”. That is a response to a request, not an announcement that USB DVD or Blu-ray support has shipped. Valve’s support guidance recommends installing available system updates, but the cited material does not confirm that this specific commit reached a retail release.

What should you check before buying a drive for Steam Frame?
Confirm the format, power design, software task and installed Frame build in that order. The following sequence prevents a connector or product-page assumption from becoming an expensive incompatibility.
- Identify every disc format. Separate CD, DVD and Blu-ray needs. For Blu-ray, verify the exact model’s supported disc list; do not infer that every Blu-ray mechanism handles every specialty format.
- Record the drive’s power arrangement. Note whether it is bus-powered, uses two USB connections, or requires a dedicated adapter. A USB-C label only describes the connector.
- Check the installed Frame software. Install available system updates through Valve’s normal support path, then look for release notes or device documentation that explicitly mentions optical drives. Do not assume a kernel-source mirror reflects your build.
- Plan a data-disc test before a movie test. A drive that mounts a data disc has passed a narrower test than one that plays a commercial movie. Keep those outcomes separate.
- Verify the application requirement. Determine whether your task is file copying, audio playback, DVD video, Blu-ray video, disc burning or installing a legacy PC game. Each can require different software and codecs.
- Keep a return path. Because no named drive has documented retail-Frame success, buy only where the power arrangement and return terms fit your risk.
How do you troubleshoot “Why can’t I use my detachable disc drive?”
Start with physical symptoms, then separate mounting from playback. A missing spin, an unmounted disc and an unsupported application are different failures.
1. The drive does not spin
- Disconnect other USB accessories and reconnect the drive directly to Frame.
- Check whether the drive requires a second USB lead or its own adapter.
- If it is bus-powered, try a data-capable powered USB-C hub whose electrical ratings meet the drive’s requirements. No specific hub is established as a solution here.
- Try a known-good disc of the format the drive advertises. A damaged or unsupported disc can resemble a power fault.
2. The disc spins but no volume appears
- Confirm that the inserted medium matches the drive’s advertised formats.
- Check whether the current SteamOS build contains and loads the relevant optical-drive modules; the mirrored configuration change alone cannot answer that.
- Test a data disc before drawing conclusions from a movie disc, which may need additional playback components.
3. Files appear but the intended program will not run
File access does not guarantee that a Windows installer, copy-protection system or legacy executable works on Steam Frame’s ARM64 SteamOS environment. The drive can be functioning while the application remains incompatible.
4. A splitter does not help
A passive splitter may provide connectors without providing the regulated power or USB data behavior a drive needs. The owner report specifically says a first splitter attempt did not suffice; that experience should prompt a check of the hub’s power design rather than a claim that every splitter fails.
Can a USB drive play DVD or Blu-ray movies on Steam Frame?
Not automatically. Reading the disc, mounting its files and decoding a commercial movie are separate capabilities.
Verbatim states that DVD movie playback for the 98938 requires separate DVD playback software. The 43888 disclosure says playback software is not included. Bundled Windows applications therefore cannot be treated as SteamOS applications, and a drive’s advertised 4K playback capability cannot be transferred to Frame without compatible software and hardware decoding.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Commercial Blu-ray discs may also involve menus, codecs and content protection that a basic data-disc mount does not address. No cited evidence establishes successful commercial-movie playback on a retail Frame with either named Verbatim drive or the ASUS model.
Will an optical drive install or run an old physical PC game?
Disc detection is only the first step. The installer must support the operating system and CPU architecture, any protection mechanism must function, and the installed game must have a compatible runtime.
Valve describes different PC-streamed and standalone execution models for Frame. A physical disc can supply files while the game itself still requires a supported build or a compatible translation layer. An installer that expects a conventional x86 Windows environment is not proven to run merely because the optical drive mounts its contents.
For a legacy title, check whether a digital Linux/ARM build, a documented compatibility method or a stream-from-PC option exists before buying hardware specifically for the disc.

How this comparison was built
The comparison uses five decision criteria: the manufacturer’s supported disc formats, the drive’s power arrangement, connector and cable requirements, software disclosures, and the strength of Frame-specific evidence. Manufacturer format specifications are stronger evidence for what a mechanism can read than a connector label. Valve’s port specification establishes the available interface but not an accessory power budget. The mirrored kernel change indicates source-level capability, while confirmed retail inclusion and an actual drive-and-disc demonstration would be stronger evidence that is not established here.
That hierarchy is why a CD/DVD model is the sensible format choice for CD and DVD tasks, a Blu-ray model is necessary for Blu-ray media, and neither category can be called Frame-compatible on the current evidence.

What is the safest buying decision?
If your discs are CDs or DVDs, start with an external USB CD/DVD drive such as the 98938 class and treat Frame power and software as unresolved gates. If Blu-ray is mandatory, select a drive whose manufacturer explicitly lists Blu-ray plus the CD/DVD formats you need; the 43888 is an example of that advertised coverage. If a portable drive cannot spin, consider a separately powered design or a powered hub only after checking the electrical requirements.
Before spending, confirm the installed Frame build, the exact media list, the drive’s power method and the software needed for your real task. Until Valve documents retail support or a named setup is demonstrated, regard optical-drive use on Frame as conditional rather than guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a USB-C optical drive work on Steam Frame automatically?
No. USB-C identifies the connector and sometimes the signaling mode, but it does not establish that SteamOS has the required modules or that Frame can supply the drive’s startup current. The drive still needs the right disc format and application support.
Is the Frame’s 45 W charging figure enough to power a DVD drive?
That figure is Valve’s maximum charging input, not an accessory-output specification. It cannot be used to calculate how much current the rear USB-C port can deliver to an optical drive.
Can a USB recovery drive prove that optical discs are supported?
No. Booting or recovering from a USB storage device exercises a different path from optical-drive modules, media mounting and disc playback. Recovery-media behavior should not be treated as evidence for CD, DVD or Blu-ray support.
Why can a drive read files but fail to play a movie?
Movie playback needs software, codecs and, for commercial media, protection handling beyond basic filesystem access. A manufacturer’s Windows playback bundle does not guarantee an equivalent SteamOS application on Frame.
