1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuy Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered on Steam if PC modding is your priority. It is the version with documented support from the GBTVGR Mod Manager, including Steam and Epic game-directory detection, MODS.POD and PATCH.POD asset deployment, compatibility metadata, and the gbhook framework for code-based mods. The manager also warns that some custom-level and code mods require the Steam build, making Steam the safest purchase for the widest researched mod selection.
The 2009 original remains relevant if you specifically want its multiplayer mode or prefer its look at high settings, but its current PC mod-tool compatibility was not verified to the same standard. The 2019 remaster is therefore the practical recommendation for a new modding-focused purchase, with one major trade-off: it does not include the original multiplayer mode.

Quick decision: which edition fits your goal?
| Your priority | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum compatibility with documented modern mod tools | Remastered on Steam | GBTVGR Mod Manager supports the remaster, recognizes Steam installations, manages asset packages, and integrates with gbhook. |
| Using a custom level or code mod that checks storefront | Remastered on Steam | The manager documentation warns that some of these mods require the Steam version. |
| Playing the original multiplayer mode | Original 2009 PC release | The remaster omits that mode. |
| Choosing based on graphics alone | Depends on your preference | Some Steam community users say the original can look better at high settings; that is subjective testimony, not an official technical comparison. |
| Buying an edition with a clearly documented current mod ecosystem | Remastered on Steam | The original’s present-day mod support was not confirmed by an equivalent authoritative compatibility matrix. |
What the two PC releases are
The original: 2009
Ghostbusters: The Video Game launched on PC in 2009. Terminal Reality developed that release. It is the older build with the original feature set, including the multiplayer mode that was later absent from the remaster.
The remaster: 2019
Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered launched for PC and consoles on October 4, 2019. Saber Interactive handled the remaster. It retains the single-player story, licensed likenesses and voices associated with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, and the original story credited to Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.

The remaster is not simply a storefront repackage of the 2009 executable. It is a separate release with its own executable, files and mod-management workflow. That distinction is why a mod made for one edition should not be assumed to work in the other.
Why Remastered is the stronger modding platform
GBTVGR Mod Manager covers the files modders actually change
The GBTVGR Mod Manager documentation describes the utility as assistance for managing mods for Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered. It is designed around the remaster’s package workflow, including MODS.POD and PATCH.POD files. Those packages can contain replacement or added game assets, so the manager gives you a controlled way to deploy and remove them instead of manually overwriting the installation.
The manager supports common Steam and Epic installation directories. That matters when you install the game through a launcher: you can point the utility at the directory containing the game files, verify that it recognizes the installation, and then let it handle the package changes. Support for both launchers does not mean every mod supports both launchers; compatibility is determined by each mod’s requirements.

Asset replacement and package edits are only one category of mod. The same documentation describes gbhook as a framework with an API for interacting with the game engine, enabling mods written as code. This gives the remaster a documented route for behavior changes that cannot be achieved by swapping textures, audio or other packaged assets.

gbhook has its own mods directory. By default, that directory is in the main game directory, the same folder that contains ghost.exe. A code mod that uses gbhook therefore has a different placement rule from a MODS.POD or PATCH.POD package. Read the individual mod’s instructions before copying files, and do not put a gbhook mod inside a package unless its author specifically tells you to.
Compatibility metadata makes failures easier to diagnose
The manager records compatibility metadata and can identify whether a mod is intended for the Steam build. Its documentation specifically warns when a detected custom-level or code mod is not running on Steam. That check is valuable because a mod can appear installed yet fail at launch, fail to load a level, or produce missing assets when the storefront does not match the author’s target.
Steam versus Epic for Remastered mods
Both Steam and Epic installation directories are supported by the GBTVGR Mod Manager, so Epic is a viable way to run the remaster for mods that explicitly support it. The safer purchase for modding, however, is Steam. Some custom-level and code mods require the Steam version, and the manager’s compatibility warning is built around detecting that condition.
Use this rule when choosing your storefront:
- Steam: choose it when you want the fewest storefront-related exclusions, especially for custom levels and code mods.
- Epic: choose it only when the mods you intend to use state that Epic is supported, or when storefront price and ownership considerations matter more than maximum compatibility.
- Do not infer support from installation detection: the manager recognizing an Epic directory means it can manage that location; it does not certify that every mod works there.
How to install and manage Remastered mods
The exact files supplied by a mod author vary, but the documented workflow can be organized into a repeatable sequence. Keep a clean, unmodified installation available so you can recover without guessing which file caused a problem.

- Install the Steam edition. Install Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered through Steam and run it once. This creates the normal game directory and confirms that the base installation launches before any modifications.
- Locate the game directory. Find the folder containing the remaster’s executable, including
ghost.exe. The GBTVGR Mod Manager needs this directory rather than a parent folder such as your general Steam library. - Install the GBTVGR Mod Manager. Follow the manager’s own installation instructions, then select or browse to the Remastered directory. Confirm that it identifies the installation as the remaster and not another Ghostbusters title or the 2009 release.
- Check each mod’s compatibility entry. Before enabling a download, read whether it targets Steam, Epic or both, and whether it is an asset package, a custom level or a gbhook code mod. Pay attention to warnings shown by the manager; a storefront mismatch is a reason to stop, not a warning to ignore.
- Deploy asset packages through the manager. Use the manager’s package workflow for mods supplied as
MODS.POD,PATCH.PODor another format the utility recognizes. This keeps the original files recoverable and lets you disable the mod without manually reconstructing the installation. - Install gbhook when a code mod requires it. Follow the code mod’s stated gbhook version and place its files in the gbhook mods directory. By default, that directory is in the main game folder beside
ghost.exe; do not assume the location is inside the package directory. - Enable one substantial change at a time. Launch the game after each major mod or group from the same author. If a level fails to load or the game closes, you will know which change to disable first.
- Keep backups and a load-order record. Save copies of original package files and note which mods are active. If two mods change the same asset or script, the last deployment can determine which version the game reads.
What the remaster gives up
No original multiplayer mode
The remaster is single-player. Saber Interactive recovered six versions of the source code while working on the project but could not identify the correct version needed to restore the original multiplayer mode. As a result, buying Remastered for its mod support means giving up that feature; no modding recommendation can turn the remaster into the officially included 2009 multiplayer experience.
Visual differences are a personal choice
A Steam community comparison argues that the original PC release can look better at high settings and that some remaster changes are limited in particular scenes. This is user testimony, not an official specification or controlled benchmark. If your decision is based on lighting, texture treatment or scene-by-scene presentation, watch comparisons and decide which rendering style you prefer rather than treating “better graphics” as an established fact.
The original has less verified current mod guidance
The absence of a comparable current compatibility matrix for the 2009 PC release does not prove that the original is unmoddable. It means only that its present-day tools, package conventions and storefront requirements were not verified to the same documented standard as Remastered’s GBTVGR Mod Manager and gbhook workflow. Buy the original for its distinct features, not on the assumption that every Remastered mod can be transferred.
PC requirements and launcher caveats

| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows; Windows 7 SP2 listed | Windows 10 listed |
| Processor | Intel i3 | Intel i5-4690 |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 6 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GT 630 | GTX 670 |
| Storage | 24 GB | 24 GB |
These are Steam’s published requirements, not a guarantee that a heavily modded setup will perform identically. Steam also states that its client requires Windows 10 or later from January 1, 2024. That client requirement can matter even though the game’s listed minimum operating system still mentions Windows 7 SP2. In practice, a current Steam installation should be planned around a supported Windows 10-or-newer environment.

The manager cannot find the game
- Browse to the directory containing
ghost.exe, not merely the Steam or Epic library root. - Confirm that you installed Remastered, because the 2009 executable is a different release.
- Launch the unmodified game once, then rescan the directory in the manager.
A custom level or code mod is rejected
Read the compatibility warning first. If the mod requires Steam and you installed the Epic edition, the reliable fix is to use the Steam build rather than forcing files into place. If you already own Steam, remove the incompatible deployment and point the manager to the Steam directory.
A package mod loads but a code mod does nothing
- Check whether the code mod requires gbhook.
- Verify that gbhook is installed in the game directory and that the mod is in gbhook’s own mods folder.
- Confirm that the mod targets the same Remastered version and storefront.
- Disable other code mods temporarily to identify conflicts.
The game breaks after several mods are enabled
Disable the newest change first, then test. Restore the clean package backup if necessary, verify the game files through the launcher, and reinstall mods one at a time. Keeping package deployment in the manager makes this rollback safer than replacing original files by hand.

Bottom line for a new purchase
For PC modding, buy Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered on Steam. It has the clearest documented toolchain: GBTVGR Mod Manager for package-based assets, gbhook for code mods, and compatibility checks that explicitly flag Steam-only custom-level and code mods. Choose the 2009 original only when its multiplayer mode or its subjective visual presentation matters more to you than access to that documented Remastered ecosystem.
