Whichever storefront you choose, the best first-playthrough configuration is the Unofficial Patch in Basic mode. Use Plus for a replay when you actively want restored cut content and additional changes.
Steam and GOG sell the same original 2004 PC role-playing game, but their installation assumptions differ. The storefront is only the first decision: the patch mode determines how closely your game follows the original release, how much restored material appears, and whether existing saves remain usable.

Steam or GOG: what actually differs?
Both versions are digital releases of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, the first-person action RPG set in modern-day Los Angeles. Steam identifies Troika Games as the developer, Activision as the publisher, and 16 November 2004 as the release date. The important difference for a 2026 buyer is not the story or engine; it is the installation and maintenance experience around that original game.

That comparison does not make one storefront universally superior. GOG reduces the number of compatibility decisions at installation, while Steam gives you a more obviously untouched starting point and a familiar launcher workflow. The same Unofficial Patch can be used with either edition.

Why the Steam system requirements should not decide your purchase
Steam still displays the original Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP requirements. Those are historical storefront metadata from the 2004 release, not a modern compatibility guarantee. They tell you what the game expected when it shipped, but they do not describe how reliably an unmodified installation behaves on current Windows builds.
GOG’s listing instead states that the distributed game contains “third-party technical fixes to ensure compatibility on modern systems,” advertises “Verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11,” and provides a fully offline installer. That wording makes GOG the safer default when you want to install and play without first researching fixes. It does not mean every future Windows update is guaranteed to behave identically, and regional listing text can change.
Does the GOG edition include the Unofficial Patch?
Do not treat the storefront’s technical fixes as proof that the full community Unofficial Patch is preinstalled. GOG advertises compatibility-oriented fixes in its game listing and also exposes a separate Unofficial Patch listing. Install the patch deliberately if you want its bug fixes, restored content, or configuration choices, regardless of which storefront supplied the base game.

The Unofficial Patch documentation describes it as a cumulative patch containing all previous releases, with the official Troika Games patch 1.2 included. It supports retail and downloadable editions of any kind, which covers both current digital storefront versions. The patch is installed in its own subfolder, so other mods can run alongside it, and its loader can start a more vanilla-style executable when you need the original presentation.

Basic or Plus: choose the experience before you start

Basic is the recommended starting point because it addresses the game’s accumulated technical problems without asking you to learn a substantially altered version at the same time. Plus is not simply a higher-quality Basic mode; it is a different editorial choice about what belongs in the game. Restored material, balance adjustments, and extra tweaks can change pacing and discovery, so a first playthrough should use Plus only when that expanded experience is your explicit goal.
How to install the Unofficial Patch on either storefront
The patch supports both Steam and GOG, but the launcher handoff is different. Download the current release from its maintained listing and read the included instructions for the installer options available in that release. Version 12.0 was listed as last updated on 15 October 2026; a community announcement dated 29 September 2026 announced that release. Labels and installer screens can change, so follow the text in the version you actually download.
- Finish or preserve any existing run. Patch-mode changes are not an in-place save migration. Copy your current save folder somewhere safe if you may want to return to it.
- Install the patch into the game’s designated subfolder. The documented layout keeps the patch separate from the base installation, allowing parallel mod setups and a vanilla-style executable.
- Select Basic or Plus in the patch installer. Pick Basic for a first run; pick Plus only when restored and expanded content is wanted.
- Launch the patched game through the method documented for your storefront. The executable and subfolder names must match the release you installed.
- Begin a new game. The readme warns that saves from another patch state are moved to
save/incompatible. If your old saves appear to have vanished, check that location before assuming they were deleted.
Steam launch option
For Steam, open the game’s library entry, choose Properties, stay on the General page, and enter -game Unofficial_Patch in Launch Options. Start the game from Steam after saving that option. Remove the option when you want to launch the unpatched or vanilla-style installation, following the patch readme’s instructions for the executable available in your install.

GOG’s offline installer and launcher do not use Steam’s Launch Options box. Install the game, install the patch into that installation, and use the patch’s documented shortcut or executable selection for the mode you chose. Keep the installer files if you want to recreate the setup without an internet connection.

Which version should you buy? A decision guide
Choose GOG for the simplest modern-Windows setup
GOG is the practical recommendation when your priority is getting an older game running on Windows 10 or 11 with minimal preliminary work. Its listing explicitly advertises modern compatibility fixes and an offline installer. Install Basic, start a new game, and keep the offline installer and patch installer together for future reinstalls.
Choose Steam if you already live in the Steam ecosystem
Steam makes sense when your games, controller settings, and launch habits are already there, or when you want to control the base installation and patch selection yourself. The clean install is useful for players who want to archive the original files, test Basic and Plus in separate folders, or manage their own mod order. Remember that the requirements shown on Steam are historical; do not interpret the Windows 98/ME/2000/XP list as evidence that an untouched install is optimized for current Windows.
Choose Plus on either storefront for a replay
Plus is the choice for a second run, a restoration-focused playthrough, or anyone who has decided that additional content and tweaks matter more than strict fidelity to the original balance. Because Plus changes more than bug behavior, document the mode in your save notes and do not switch an active Basic run to Plus expecting the same saves to load.

Use the vanilla executable only for archival fidelity
An untouched installation preserves the original release behavior, but it also gives up the cumulative bug fixes and modern compatibility work in the Unofficial Patch. It is appropriate for archival comparison or curiosity, not the safest first launch on a current PC. The original requirements shown by Steam date from 2004, and modern compatibility is consequently less assured than the GOG listing’s stated Windows 10/11 target.

What happens when you change patch modes?
The patch readme’s warning is operationally important: begin a new game after patching. Saves created under one patch state can be incompatible with another, and the loader moves them to save/incompatible. This is why changing from Basic to Plus, Plus to Basic, or a patched install to a different patch arrangement should be treated as starting a separate campaign.
- Complete the current run or make a manual backup before changing anything.
- Record which storefront, patch version, and mode created each save.
- After changing the mode, launch once and verify that a new game creates saves in the expected folder.
- If an old save is missing from the normal list, inspect
save/incompatiblerather than repeatedly reinstalling.
Common setup problems and the appropriate fix
The game starts but you expected restored content
Confirm that the patch loader is launching the patched subfolder and that the installer selected Plus. A patched installation that still starts the vanilla executable will not show Plus content. On Steam, check the exact -game Unofficial_Patch launch option; on GOG, use the shortcut or executable specified by the patch’s own readme.
Your old saves no longer appear
Look in save/incompatible. This is the documented behavior after changing patch states, not evidence that the files were erased. To continue that campaign, restore the original patch mode and file layout rather than mixing saves between modes.
You want to run another mod beside the patch
The Unofficial Patch’s separate subfolder is designed to let other mods run in parallel. Install each mod according to its documentation and keep one clearly named folder per configuration. Do not overwrite a working Basic installation before you have copied its saves and installer files.

Windows compatibility is still uncertain
Prefer the GOG listing when compatibility assurance is your main concern, or use the Unofficial Patch on Steam instead of relying on the historical requirements alone. Storefront text, launcher behavior, and regional availability can change, so check the live listing and the current patch readme at the time of purchase.
Price, availability, and version currency
Digital prices, discounts, regional availability, and launcher behavior are volatile. The available information does not establish a permanent price or a performance benchmark for either edition, so check the live Steam or GOG listing in your region before buying. The Unofficial Patch listing identified version 12.0 as last updated 15 October 2026; use the newest release shown when you install rather than assuming an older guide’s version number still applies.
