For most beginners, the original 2001 Xbox is the easiest Xbox to mod for homebrew. The current ENDGAME software exploit works across retail revisions, does not require a particular game, and can be started with an Xbox-to-USB-female adapter plus a compatible small USB drive or an Android device running DriveDroid.
Xbox 360 can provide deeper hardware-level access, but only on the right motherboard and exploit combination. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S belong in a different category: Microsoft offers an official Developer Mode for testing applications, while the available material does not establish an unrestricted custom-firmware exploit for those consoles.

Which Xbox should you choose?
| Console | Software-only path | Revision coverage | Soldering or modchip | What you get | Method category |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Xbox | Yes: ENDGAME, with game-save and hotswap alternatives also documented | ENDGAME is documented for all retail kernel and dashboard versions | No for the ENDGAME softmod | Broad homebrew platform with the most predictable beginner route | Unofficial software exploit |
| Xbox 360 | Revision-dependent; Bad Update is documented for hardware-incompatible systems | Depends on Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon/Opus, Jasper, Tonasket, Trinity, Corona or Barracuda/Winchester hardware | Usually, for JTAG or Reset Glitch Hack installations | Full homebrew, emulator and Linux capability on compatible systems | Unofficial hardware exploit, with limited software alternatives |
| Xbox One | Official Developer Mode, not an unrestricted softmod | Retail consoles can be activated as development kits under Microsoft’s program | No exploit hardware for the official mode | Application development and testing, with platform restrictions | Sanctioned developer feature |
| Xbox Series X|S | No broad homebrew route established here | Backward compatibility supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games | Not established | Official game playback, not custom firmware access | Retail feature |
If your goal is a custom homebrew environment rather than app development, buy an original Xbox and use ENDGAME. Choose a pre-1.6 original Xbox only if TSOP flashing or another hardmod is part of your plan; revision 1.6 remains a good softmod target.

ConsoleMods describes ENDGAME as “the easiest and safest method” when used with the Xbox Softmodding Tool. Its entry point is software-based and is documented as compatible with every retail kernel and dashboard version. XboxDev describes the exploit as able to softmod any original Xbox revision without requiring a specific game.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That combination removes the two problems that make older-console modding intimidating: identifying a narrow hardware window and finding a particular exploitable game. You still need compatible transfer hardware, but you do not need to open the console, solder a chip or flash the motherboard to begin.
The starter kit
- A retail original Xbox in working condition. ENDGAME is intended to cover all retail revisions.
- An Xbox-to-USB-female adapter. This is the interface that lets the console use a USB storage device; it is not a mod by itself.
- Either a compatible USB flash drive of 4GB or smaller, as specified by the ENDGAME documentation, or an Android device configured with DriveDroid.
- The current ENDGAME files and instructions from a maintained Xbox modding guide.
USB compatibility is not universal. Many modern flash drives are too large, use controllers the console does not recognize, or otherwise fail to appear. Check a maintained compatibility list before buying several drives or assuming a failed transfer means the console is broken.
ENDGAME softmod procedure
- Identify your target. Confirm that you are working with an original Xbox, not an Xbox 360. ENDGAME is the original-Xbox route.
- Prepare the transfer device. Connect the Xbox-to-USB-female adapter and use a USB flash drive no larger than 4GB, or use an Android phone with DriveDroid. Select a device known to work on the maintained compatibility list.
- Prepare the ENDGAME package. Follow the current Xbox Softmodding Tool instructions for putting the required exploit files on the storage device. Do not substitute files from an unrelated Xbox 360 or Xbox One guide.
- Run the software entry point. Use the documented console-side sequence to launch ENDGAME. The method is designed to work without a particular game and without soldering.
- Install only the homebrew environment you need. After the exploit has completed, follow the tool’s instructions for the dashboard and applications you intend to use. Keep the original instructions with the console so future maintenance matches its revision and software state.
The exact file package and menu wording can change as the tools are maintained, so use the current guide rather than an old video that assumes a particular dashboard release.
Original Xbox revisions: softmod versus TSOP flash
All original Xbox revisions can be softmodded through ENDGAME according to the documented compatibility claims. The revision matters mainly when you want a hardmod or a TSOP flash.

| Revision | ENDGAME softmod | TSOP flashing | Practical buying implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0–1.5 | Supported | Supported | Most flexible choice for an advanced owner who may later flash the TSOP |
| 1.6 | Supported | Not supported | Still a sound beginner softmod; choose another revision only if TSOP work is important |
Revision 1.6 cannot be TSOP flashed because its BIOS is integrated into the Xyclops ROM. That limitation does not make it a poor homebrew machine: it affects one hardmod technique, not the ENDGAME software route.
When a pre-1.6 console is worth seeking
Buy a confirmed 1.0–1.5 unit when you specifically want the option of TSOP flashing, experimentation with advanced firmware arrangements or other hardmod projects. Do not pay a premium merely because a seller calls a console “moddable”; every retail revision is already a candidate for the ENDGAME softmod.
Xbox 360: powerful, but harder to shop for
The Xbox 360 has a capable homebrew scene, but the easy part is not the installation. The difficult part is finding a motherboard and dashboard combination that still supports a known exploit. The documented routes that fully unlock compatible machines are JTAG and Reset Glitch Hack (RGH), both of which normally involve hardware work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems360 motherboard families
| Family named in the modding guide | How to interpret it when buying |
|---|---|
| Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon/Opus, Jasper, Tonasket | Potential JTAG or RGH targets, but the exact method depends on board details and software state |
| Trinity and Corona | Common RGH-era families; compatibility still has to be verified against the specific board and exploit instructions |
| Barracuda/Winchester | The cited guide reports no known hardware exploit for this family |
Do not identify a 360 solely by its shell color, storage size or retail name. Sellers can mislabel motherboard families, and two consoles from the same product generation may have different exploit prospects. A serious purchase requires board identification and confirmation against a current compatibility guide before money changes hands.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Why JTAG and RGH are less beginner-friendly
- The exploit is tied to hardware revision, not simply the Xbox 360 name.
- Installation commonly requires opening the console and performing soldering or other hardware work.
- A mistake can leave the console unable to boot, creating a more expensive recovery than an unsuccessful USB softmod.
- Later hardware, especially Barracuda/Winchester, may not have the hardware exploit you expected.
For Barracuda/Winchester, the cited guide leaves Bad Update as the documented software alternative when a hardware route is unavailable. That does not make every Winchester an equally straightforward homebrew machine; it means the buying decision and achievable feature set differ from a JTAG or RGH system.
Xbox One Developer Mode is not the same as a softmod
Microsoft’s Xbox One Developer Mode agreement allows a retail console to be activated as a development kit for testing applications. Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform FAQ explains that users can switch between Developer Mode and Retail Mode; leaving Developer Mode returns the console to normal retail play.
What Developer Mode is useful for
- Testing applications you are developing for the Xbox platform.
- Running within Microsoft’s supported development and sandbox rules.
- Returning to ordinary retail gaming by switching back to Retail Mode.
What it does not establish
Developer Mode is not presented by Microsoft as unrestricted custom firmware, a replacement dashboard or arbitrary filesystem access. It should not be described as the Xbox One equivalent of an original Xbox softmod. The UWP FAQ also states that UWP apps are no longer accepted in the Xbox Store, so store distribution and local development are separate concerns.
Xbox Series X|S: backward compatibility is not homebrew
Xbox Series X and Series S can play selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games through Microsoft’s official backward-compatibility program. That feature confirms supported retail playback, not an exploit, custom firmware or a path to install arbitrary homebrew software.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If your priority is playing older games with current-console convenience, Series backward compatibility may be the right retail feature. If your priority is modifying the console itself, the evidence here does not establish a broad Series homebrew method, so do not buy one expecting an ENDGAME-style process.

Choose an original Xbox when you want the least risky first project
Look for a functioning retail console, then budget for the Xbox-to-USB-female adapter and a compatible small USB device. The adapter recommendation belongs next to the ENDGAME method because it is the practical transfer interface. A 4GB-or-smaller drive is the documented ceiling, but compatibility still varies by model.
Choose a pre-1.6 original Xbox for advanced hardmod flexibility
Confirm the revision before buying if TSOP flashing is central to your plan. Revisions 1.0 through 1.5 support that technique; 1.6 consoles do not. For a normal software softmod, this distinction is secondary.
Choose an Xbox 360 only if you are comfortable screening hardware
Ask for motherboard evidence, verify the family against a maintained JTAG/RGH guide and understand that soldering may be required. Avoid treating a low price as proof of exploitability. Barracuda/Winchester deserves particular caution because the cited guide reports no known hardware exploit.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose Xbox One Developer Mode for sanctioned app testing
This is the appropriate route when your project is application development inside Microsoft’s rules. It is not the appropriate route when you want a custom dashboard or unrestricted firmware control.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying any USB drive and assuming it will work
The ENDGAME documentation specifies a drive of 4GB or smaller, but size alone does not guarantee recognition. Check a maintained compatibility list and test one known-compatible device before diagnosing the exploit.
Assuming revision 1.6 cannot be modded
It can be softmodded. The limitation is TSOP flashing, caused by the Xyclops ROM. Keep the softmod and hardmod decisions separate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Confusing an adapter with a modchip
The Xbox-to-USB-female adapter only provides the physical connection for transferring files. It does not unlock the console on its own.
Buying a 360 without identifying the board
JTAG and RGH availability follows motherboard and software conditions. Obtain reliable revision information before choosing a console, and treat Barracuda/Winchester as a separate case.
Calling Developer Mode “custom firmware”
Developer Mode is an official testing environment that can be exited to Retail Mode. Describing it as unrestricted homebrew overstates what Microsoft documents.
Expecting a guaranteed success rate or installation time
No authoritative, comparable success percentages, average installation times or failure-rate figures are established for these methods. The reliable basis for choosing is documented revision coverage, required hardware and whether the path is official or an exploit.
