There is no single best Xbox Game Pass plan. Choose by where you play first: Essential is the low-cost console option, Premium suits players who can wait up to a year for most new Xbox-published games, Ultimate is for the broadest console-and-PC package with day-one access and partner benefits, and PC Game Pass is the focused choice for PC-only players.
The comparison below uses the U.S. plan picker viewed October 13, 2026, and Xbox announcements current through October 2026. Prices, catalogs, benefits, supported markets and cloud rules can change, so verify the local picker before subscribing.

Quick answer: match the plan to your habit
| Plan | Best fit | Advertised catalog | Day-one access | Console online multiplayer | Cloud allowance shown for November 2026 | U.S. monthly price notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Console players who mainly need online multiplayer, a smaller library and basic benefits | 50+ games | No | Yes | 5 hours per month | $9.99, published with the October 2025 plan changes; confirm locally |
| Premium | Players wanting a larger console/PC library who can wait for eligible Xbox-published releases | 200+ games | Eligible Xbox-published games within one year; Call of Duty is excluded from this timing promise | Yes | 10 hours per month | $14.99, published with the October 2025 plan changes; confirm locally |
| Ultimate | Players using console and/or PC who want the broadest advertised package, day-one games and included partner services | 500+ games | Yes, with the Call of Duty launch exception | Yes | 15 hours per month | $22.99 in the U.S. from April 21, 2026 |
| PC Game Pass | PC-only players who want day-one PC games and EA Play without a console plan | 300+ PC games | Yes, with the Call of Duty launch exception | Not applicable to PC | Not included in the plan’s listed cloud allowance | $13.99 in the U.S. from April 21, 2026 |
These game counts are Xbox’s advertised figures, not permanent inventory guarantees. Xbox says titles, game totals, features and availability vary by time, region, plan and platform. You can play an included game only while your subscription is active and while that title remains in the library.

Essential: the economical console baseline
Essential is the practical starting point for a console owner whose priority is online multiplayer rather than immediate access to every new release. Xbox lists console, PC and supported-device access, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits and rewards, with an advertised library of more than 50 games.
#1 Best Overall
- Spacious Design: Measuring 21.1" wide and 14.1" deep, our lap desk comfortably fits most laptops up to 15.6". Extra room for accessories ensures convenience.
- Enhanced Functionality: Packed with handy features, including a 5x9" precision tracking mouse pad and a built-in phone slot for seamless work or video calls. Plus, enjoy ergonomic support with the integrated cushioned wrist rest.
- Cool Comfort: Enjoy a stable surface with our lap desk's dual bolster cushion, designed for comfort and airflow, keeping your lap cool during extended use.
- Durable Surface: Work with confidence on our lap desk's solid surface, featuring a sleek black carbon color, ensuring optimal air circulation to prevent your laptop from overheating.
- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
The trade-off is deliberate: Essential does not include day-one releases. Its cloud allowance is shown as five hours per month beginning in November 2026. If you rarely stream games and mostly play installed titles, that limit may have little effect; if streaming is your main way to play, the higher tiers deserve closer attention.
Premium: more games and a waiting strategy
Premium expands the advertised library to more than 200 games and covers console, PC and supported devices. It includes online console multiplayer, in-game benefits and rewards. Xbox says new Xbox-published games arrive within one year, rather than necessarily on launch day. Call of Duty titles are specifically excluded from that one-year rule.
Premium is a fit for players who want a materially broader selection than Essential and are comfortable buying a game separately at launch or waiting for its eventual inclusion. The plan’s displayed cloud allowance is 10 hours per month from November 2026.
Ultimate: the broadest advertised package
Ultimate combines console and PC access with an advertised library of more than 500 games, day-one games, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits and rewards. It also includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. Those extras matter only if you would use them; an unused membership is not a saving.
Ultimate’s U.S. price is $22.99 per month from April 21, 2026. Xbox currently shows a 15-hour monthly cloud allowance beginning in November 2026. Future Call of Duty games are the important exception to the day-one expectation: Xbox says they will not arrive in Ultimate at launch and are planned for the following holiday season, roughly a year later.
PC Game Pass: the focused PC choice
PC Game Pass is for players who do not need an Xbox console plan. Xbox advertises more than 300 PC games, day-one games, EA Play and in-game benefits. The U.S. price is $13.99 per month from April 21, 2026.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The current plan information does not list cloud gaming as an included PC Game Pass feature and explicitly excludes it from the subscription cloud-hour allowances. Do not choose PC Game Pass expecting the same cloud entitlement shown for Essential, Premium or Ultimate. As with Ultimate, future Call of Duty games are not promised at PC launch; Xbox says they are planned for the following holiday season.
Choose by device before comparing game counts
If you play only on an Xbox console
Start by deciding whether you need online multiplayer. Essential, Premium and Ultimate include online console multiplayer. Then ask how quickly you need new releases. Essential is the lowest-cost route when day-one access is unnecessary. Premium adds a larger catalog and a one-year window for eligible Xbox-published games. Ultimate is the choice when launch-day access, the largest advertised library or the included partner benefits justify its higher price.
If you play only on PC
PC Game Pass is the direct comparison point. It includes day-one PC games and EA Play at $13.99 per month in the U.S. Ultimate costs more but adds the console catalog, console multiplayer, a larger advertised overall library, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics and a listed cloud allowance. If you will never use those additions, Ultimate’s extra cost buys capacity you may not need.
If you move between Xbox and PC
Ultimate is the straightforward all-in-one option because its listed access spans console and PC. Premium can make sense when you want both platforms but can wait for eligible Xbox-published releases and do not need Ultimate’s partner services. Essential also lists console, PC and supported-device access, but its 50-plus-game catalog and lack of day-one releases make it a narrower value proposition for a cross-platform player.
If you mainly stream to a supported device
Compare the monthly cloud hours, not just the catalog total. Xbox shows five hours for Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate beginning in November 2026. PC Game Pass has no listed subscription cloud allowance. Xbox also says hours, purchase options and cloud features can vary by market, with further details to follow before implementation, so check the local terms after the November change takes effect.
Day-one games and the Call of Duty exception
“Day one” is not the same promise on every plan. Ultimate and PC Game Pass are advertised with day-one games. Premium uses a different timetable: eligible Xbox-published releases are stated to arrive within one year. Essential has no day-one release access.

Call of Duty requires a separate check. Xbox’s April 21, 2026 update says future Call of Duty titles will not launch in Ultimate or PC Game Pass. They are expected to be added during the following holiday season, approximately a year later. Existing Call of Duty games remain playable while they are in the library and your subscription is active. Therefore, do not select Ultimate or PC Game Pass solely on the assumption that every new Call of Duty will be included on release day.
Cloud gaming: what changes in November 2026
Xbox announced a monthly-hour structure beginning in November 2026:
| Plan | Hours shown per month | What the timing means |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 5 | Allowance begins with the November 2026 change |
| Premium | 10 | Allowance begins with the November 2026 change |
| Ultimate | 15 | Allowance begins with the November 2026 change |
| PC Game Pass | Not included | The plan page excludes PC Game Pass from these subscription cloud allowances |
Xbox says the hours, options to purchase additional time and other cloud features may vary by market. It also said further details would be provided before the change takes effect. Recheck the terms after implementation if cloud play is central to your routine. Team Xbox estimated that 4% of Game Pass subscribers would be affected by the upcoming cloud-hour change; that is a publisher-reported estimate, not an independent measurement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a player who streams occasionally, the cap may be sufficient. For someone who streams most sessions, count your typical monthly hours before choosing a tier and allow for the possibility that the displayed limits or paid extra-hour options differ in your market.
Catalog size is a starting point, not a guarantee
The advertised numbers—50-plus, 200-plus, 500-plus and 300-plus PC games—describe the scale Xbox currently promotes for each plan. They do not guarantee that a particular game is present, that it is available in every country, or that it will stay in the library. Platform versions can differ as well: a game listed for console may not have a PC version, and vice versa.
Before subscribing, search the current catalog for the games you actually intend to play. Confirm the platform version, multiplayer requirements and whether any add-ons or editions are separate purchases. A smaller plan that contains your regular games can be better value than a larger plan whose additional titles you never launch.

How to value the included benefits
EA Play
EA Play is listed with Ultimate and PC Game Pass. It can improve the effective value of either plan if you already play EA titles or would otherwise pay for that membership separately. If you do not use its games or features, treat it as an unused extra rather than subtracting an assumed value from the subscription price.
Fortnite Crew
Fortnite Crew is listed with Ultimate. Its relevance depends on whether you actively play Fortnite and would otherwise maintain the Crew subscription. It does not make Ultimate automatically better for a player who never opens the game.
Ubisoft+ Classics
Ubisoft+ Classics is listed with Ultimate. Check the current included lineup and platform availability in your market before assigning it a value; the service’s usefulness depends on the titles you want and where you plan to play them.
In-game benefits and rewards
Essential, Premium and Ultimate list in-game benefits and rewards, while PC Game Pass lists in-game benefits. These can be useful for a player already engaged with participating games, but they should not determine the plan if your main need is a particular catalog or release schedule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prices, regions and recurring cost
The U.S. figures are monthly subscription prices, not worldwide prices. Xbox’s April 21, 2026 update set Ultimate at $22.99 and PC Game Pass at $13.99 in the United States. Essential at $9.99 and Premium at $14.99 were published with Xbox’s October 2025 plan changes. Xbox’s current local picker should be treated as the authority for your market, taxes and any available billing options.
Prices can change independently of catalog counts. A plan’s monthly fee also recurs until canceled under the account’s billing settings. Compare the cost with the months you expect to play, especially if you are considering Ultimate for a single launch window or one included partner benefit.

A five-step way to choose without overpaying
- List every device you will use. Write down Xbox console, PC and any supported streaming device. Remove plans that do not cover your primary platform.
- Mark your multiplayer requirement. If you need online multiplayer on an Xbox console, compare Essential, Premium and Ultimate; PC Game Pass is not a console-multiplayer plan.
- Check launch timing. Choose Essential only if day-one access is unnecessary. Choose Premium if a wait of up to one year for eligible Xbox-published games is acceptable. Choose Ultimate or PC Game Pass for advertised day-one access, while excluding future Call of Duty launches from that assumption.
- Search for your actual games. Verify each desired title, platform version, region and current availability. Do not use the headline game count as a substitute for this check.
- Calculate extras and cloud use honestly. Count EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics and cloud hours only when you will use them. Compare your estimated monthly streaming time with the allowance shown for your market.
Common player scenarios
“I own an Xbox and mostly play one competitive game online.”
Essential is the first plan to inspect. It supplies online console multiplayer and a 50-plus-game advertised catalog without charging for day-one access you may not use. Move to Premium or Ultimate only when the larger library, release timing or listed extras address a real part of your routine.
“I want new Xbox-published games but can wait.”
Premium is designed around that compromise: more than 200 advertised games and eligible Xbox-published releases within one year. Remember that Call of Duty is excluded from the stated timing rule.
“I play on both console and PC and want the fewest decisions.”
Ultimate provides the broadest advertised library, day-one games, console multiplayer, cloud hours and the listed EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics benefits in one plan. Its higher U.S. price is justified only if those features are useful to you.

“I am a keyboard-and-mouse PC player.”
PC Game Pass is the cleanest fit when you do not need console access or cloud gaming. It includes more than 300 PC games, day-one games and EA Play at the U.S. price established April 21, 2026.
“I stream games for long sessions.”
Compare Essential’s five hours, Premium’s 10 and Ultimate’s 15 hours per month beginning in November 2026. If your normal use exceeds those figures, investigate the local post-November terms before relying on cloud play as your primary access method.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Assuming every new Call of Duty is day one. Xbox has stated that future titles arrive later, during the following holiday season.
- Treating a catalog count as permanent. Games can leave, differ by region or be limited to one platform.
- Using U.S. prices as global prices. Open the local plan picker before checkout.
- Ignoring cloud caps. The November 2026 allowances are monthly and market details may differ.
- Paying for a tier because of unused extras. EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics have value only when they match your games.
- Confusing subscription access with ownership. You retain access only while subscribed and while the title remains included.
Do you need a controller?
A controller is optional, not a subscription requirement. Console-oriented players who need an additional input device can consider an Xbox Wireless Controller; Xbox identifies compatibility categories including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. PC-only players who already use keyboard and mouse, or already own a controller, have no reason to add this accessory to the plan decision. Choose the subscription first and the input device only if your setup requires one.
Final decision
Pick Essential for inexpensive console multiplayer and a modest catalog. Pick Premium when a larger library and a wait of up to one year for eligible Xbox-published releases are enough. Pick Ultimate when you genuinely use console and/or PC access, day-one games, cloud play and its partner benefits. Pick PC Game Pass when you are PC-only and want day-one PC games and EA Play without paying for console features. Check the local picker and the November cloud terms immediately before subscribing.
