Raditz is Goku’s older brother and a Saiyan warrior whose arrival begins Dragon Ball’s Saiyan conflict. Calling Goku by his Saiyan name, Kakarot, Raditz reveals that Goku is not an Earthling, kidnaps Gohan, and demands that Goku return to the Saiyans’ campaign of conquest.
Raditz is powerful enough to overwhelm Goku and Piccolo together, but he is also described as one of the weaker Saiyan fighters. His defeat costs Goku his life and, through Raditz’s final transmission, leads directly to the arrival of Vegeta and Nappa.

Who is Raditz in Dragon Ball?
Raditz is one of the last surviving Saiyans, Goku’s older brother, and the first major antagonist of the Saiyan Saga. The Dragon Ball Official Site’s September 28, 2021 character feature introduces him as “Goku’s evil older brother, Raditz!” That description captures both his family connection and his role as an immediate threat.

His appearance is brief, but his actions establish the central stakes of the next stage of Dragon Ball. He wants Goku to abandon Earth and rejoin the Saiyans’ campaign. When Goku refuses, Raditz takes Gohan hostage, forcing Goku into an alliance with Piccolo, his former enemy.
Is Raditz Goku’s brother?
Yes. Raditz is Goku’s older biological brother. He calls Goku “Kakarot,” the Saiyan name Goku no longer uses, and supplies the information that Goku was sent to Earth as a Saiyan child. Until Raditz arrives, Goku’s identity is understood almost entirely through his life on Earth; Raditz adds a second identity and a hostile family connection.
The relationship is deliberately uncomfortable. Raditz treats Goku less like a brother he wants to know and more like a missing soldier who has abandoned his assignment. His demand is that Goku return to the Saiyans’ work of conquering planets. The threat to Gohan shows that Raditz is willing to use family as leverage rather than offer genuine affection or reconciliation.

The Scouter and the identity reveal
Raditz’s Scouter lets him track Goku and assess the people around him. The device also gives the scene an important storytelling function: Raditz arrives with knowledge that Goku and the other Earth defenders do not possess. By identifying Goku as Kakarot, he turns a familiar hero into part of a larger alien history.
The Dragon Ball Official Site’s 2025 retrospective places Raditz’s revelation in volume 17 and describes it as the beginning of a new stage in the story. Raditz is therefore a bridge between the earlier Earth-centered adventures and the wider Saiyan conflict.

Gohan becomes the immediate target
Raditz abducts Gohan and uses the child to force Goku’s compliance. This gives Goku a personal reason to act immediately: he is not defending an abstract principle or waiting for a tournament challenge; he is trying to rescue his son from his own brother.
Gohan’s capture also creates the unusual partnership that defines the confrontation. Piccolo has been Goku’s enemy, yet both understand that Raditz is too dangerous to face separately. Their temporary cooperation is one of the most important character consequences of Raditz’s arrival.

How strong is Raditz?
Raditz is an overwhelming opponent by the standards of the Earth defenders at this point in the story. The Dragon Ball Official Site feature depicts him catching and returning a bullet, shrugging off Piccolo’s Explosive Waves, and overpowering Goku and Piccolo when they attack together. He initially withstands Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon as well.
That threat should not be confused with being the strongest Saiyan. The same feature says Raditz is regarded as one of the weaker fighters among the Saiyan warrior race and reports Nappa calling him a “weakling.” His ranking is relative: he is far beyond the heroes’ current ability, while still standing below the stronger Saiyans who are on their way.

What are Raditz’s powers and techniques?
Physical strength and durability
Raditz’s physical ability is immediately apparent. He catches a bullet and returns it, an action that establishes his speed and reflexes before the main battle begins. Piccolo’s Explosive Waves do not stop him, and he can overpower Goku and Piccolo together. These demonstrations explain why the heroes need a plan rather than a straightforward exchange of attacks.

Scouter use
His Scouter is both a tracking device and a tactical advantage. It helps Raditz find Goku and monitor the power of people around him. The technology reinforces the contrast between Raditz’s off-world military background and the Earth defenders’ less organized response.
Double Kikoha / Double Ki Blast
Raditz’s named attack is Double Kikoha, also translated as Double Ki Blast. He releases ki from both hands to strike two opponents simultaneously. In the confrontation, the technique allows him to attack Goku and Piccolo at the same time, showing that he can control the battlefield rather than focus on a single target.
Why the technique list is short
Raditz is designed as a story catalyst as much as a fighter. The official feature records his physical demonstrations and Double Kikoha, but it does not present a long catalogue of named techniques or a numeric statistic. His importance comes from what his abilities force the heroes to do.
How Goku and Piccolo defeat Raditz
The battle is won through cooperation, a discovered weakness, and sacrifice rather than superior strength. The sequence matters because each step produces a later consequence.

- Goku and Piccolo cooperate. Goku agrees to work with Piccolo because Raditz has taken Gohan and cannot be defeated by either fighter alone.
- Raditz withstands their direct attacks. His durability and combat ability make a normal two-on-one exchange ineffective.
- Gohan lashes out. Gohan’s unexpected attack creates an opening and damages Raditz, briefly changing the balance of the fight.
- Raditz’s tail becomes the tactical weakness. Goku seizes Raditz by the tail and holds him in place. Raditz’s tail is a vulnerability that the heroes can exploit, although Goku’s decision to maintain the hold leaves him exposed.
- Piccolo fires the Special Beam Cannon. Piccolo’s Makankosappo, known in English as the Special Beam Cannon, pierces Raditz. The shot also passes through Goku, who is holding Raditz in position.
Goku’s choice turns the attack into a fatal exchange. Raditz dies, and Goku dies from the same shot. The victory therefore does not establish that Goku and Piccolo have simply become stronger than Raditz; it shows how planning, Gohan’s intervention, and Goku’s willingness to sacrifice himself overcome an opponent who had dominated them directly.
What happened to Raditz?
Raditz is killed when Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon pierces both him and Goku. There is no later Raditz fight in the Vegeta and Nappa conflict. His continuing influence comes from information he transmits before dying.
Raditz tells Vegeta and Nappa about the Dragon Balls. He also warns that two Saiyans stronger than himself will reach Earth in one year. The official story retrospective identifies this one-year warning as the setup for the next conflict. Raditz’s death ends his personal story, but his final message gives the surviving Saiyans a reason to target Earth.

He reveals Goku’s Saiyan identity
Without Raditz, the audience and Goku’s allies would not receive the decisive explanation that Goku is Kakarot, a Saiyan sent to Earth. The revelation reframes Goku’s origins and makes his past relevant to the present danger.
He forces Goku and Piccolo to cooperate
Raditz creates the circumstances for Goku and Piccolo to fight on the same side. Their alliance is practical and temporary, but it changes the relationship between the two central fighters and demonstrates that the new threat is greater than their old rivalry.

He introduces the scale of the Saiyan threat
Raditz is already too strong for Goku and Piccolo to defeat conventionally, yet he is considered weak by other Saiyans. That contrast gives the audience a clear escalation: if Raditz is only a lower-ranked warrior, the two Saiyans he names are a much greater danger.
He starts the next story stage
The official retrospective describes Raditz’s arrival as the start of a new phase in the story. His recruitment demand, Gohan’s kidnapping, Goku’s death, and the warning about Vegeta and Nappa all happen in one chain of events. The Saiyan Saga grows directly out of Raditz’s short visit rather than appearing as a separate, unrelated adventure.
