There is no single strongest Fire-type starter across every Pokémon game and format. In a historical singles comparison of early Fire starters, Smogon favored Infernape for consistency, while giving Blaziken the stronger peak-threat case when it has Speed Boost. Current VGC usage and Pokémon GO raids point to different contenders because they are different competitions.
Which Fire starter has the strongest competitive case?
The answer depends on whether you value reliable performance or a high ceiling, and on the game’s rules. For the historical comparison of early Fire starters published by Smogon, Infernape had the consistency argument. The same retrospective considered Blaziken more threatening when it could use Speed Boost. That is a scoped historical judgment, not a current ranking of every Fire starter.
Infernape for consistency
In that retrospective, Infernape was the pick for consistency among the early Fire starters assessed. This makes it the clearest answer if the question is specifically about that comparison and that criterion.
Blaziken for peak threat
Speed Boost changes the comparison: Smogon’s retrospective noted that Blaziken was more threatening with the ability available. That supports a peak-potential case for Blaziken, not a claim that it is always stronger or more dependable.

How do special forms change the answer?
Allowing special forms can change a matchup or a Pokémon’s role, so a ranking needs to say whether they are permitted. For example, Smogon’s Generation VII Charizard analysis describes Mega Charizard X as a setup attacker with Dragon Dance and Swords Dance options. That analysis is specific to Generation VII and Mega Charizard X; it does not establish Charizard as the strongest starter overall.
What does current VGC usage suggest?
A third-party Regulation M-B usage snapshot, displayed for June–September 2026, lists Incineroar and Charizard prominently among Fire-type entries. This tells you which Pokémon appeared often in that ruleset and period; usage is not a universal measure of strength, and it does not settle the singles comparison.

Who is strongest in Pokémon GO raids?
Pokémon GO has different battle mechanics from the main-series games. In a raid-focused comparison, Pokémon GO Hub identifies Mega Charizard Y as a strong Fire attacker and compares it with Mega Blaziken. That makes Mega Charizard Y a relevant answer for this raid context, not a winner across Pokémon games.

- Game and ruleset: Main-series singles, VGC doubles, and Pokémon GO raids reward different things.
- Forms and abilities: Specify whether Mega Evolution is allowed and whether an ability such as Speed Boost is available.
- What “strongest” means: Separate consistency, peak threat, team utility, and raid damage rather than treating them as interchangeable.
These distinctions are why a historical singles verdict, a VGC usage snapshot, and a Pokémon GO raid comparison can name different contenders without contradicting one another.
