A digital Xbox game that will not launch is not necessarily a damaged install. Start by checking whether the problem affects one game or several, then verify your account, access rights, connection, compatibility, and console updates before trying more disruptive fixes. Record the exact error code and wording first; the right remedy can depend on your Xbox model and whether you bought the game or access it through a subscription.
First, narrow down what is failing
Before changing settings, note the console model, game title, exact error code or message, and whether you own the game or play it through a subscription. Then check whether other digital games launch.

- One game fails: Check that title’s availability on your console, its library or purchase record, and any game-specific error guidance.
- Several digital games fail: Check whether the console is online and signed into the account associated with your purchases or subscription. A connection or account-access issue may affect more than one title.
- The problem occurs only offline: Reconnect to the internet and retry before concluding that the game or license is broken. Offline access can depend on the product and account setup; purchase and subscription access should not be assumed to work identically.
These clues help focus troubleshooting but do not establish the cause by themselves.

Make sure you are signed into the Microsoft/Xbox account that bought the game or provides the relevant subscription access. Look for the game in your library or purchase record and confirm that it is available for the console you are using. Microsoft notes that compatibility can affect whether a game or app is available on a particular device: Microsoft’s guidance on pushing an app or game to a device.

If the Store asks you to buy a game you believe you already own, check the account and purchase record before paying again. If the entitlement is still unclear, contact Xbox Support with the order details rather than buying a second copy. A subscription title is access through that subscription, not necessarily a permanent purchase.
Check the connection and console update
Reconnect the console to the internet, then check for a system update. Microsoft’s instructions for Xbox One say to open the guide and go to Profile & system > Settings to check for an update. If No console update available is grayed out, the console is already current according to those instructions. Menu names can differ by console family and software version, so use the equivalent update screen on Series X|S if the Xbox One path does not match. See Microsoft’s Xbox One system-update guidance.

Try low-impact recovery steps
- Quit the game and reopen it. Use the console’s guide or home screen to close the game, then launch it again.
- Restart the console normally. Use the console’s power menu, allow it to restart, and try the game again.
- Retry while online. If the failure happened offline, reconnect and launch the title again so the console can reach Xbox services if needed.
These are basic checks, not guaranteed fixes. If they do not help, avoid jumping straight to a factory reset or deleting saved data. Confirm save synchronization and review the error-specific support guidance before any step that could remove data or settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the support page for your console and error
If the game still will not start, use the exact error code and console generation to find the relevant Xbox Support instructions, or contact Xbox Support. The appropriate page may differ for Xbox 360 and Xbox One or Series X|S; support pages also cover license-unavailable and startup errors. Start with the page that matches the message on screen:

Do not apply PC app instructions to an Xbox console. For a Windows app or game, Microsoft recommends signing in, closing and reopening the app, and checking for updates. For an Xbox console installation problem, its Store guidance directs users to Xbox Support: Microsoft Store app troubleshooting.
