Hearts mean your villagers are willing to breed. They do not guarantee that a baby will appear. A baby spawns only if the village has room for it, which in practice means a valid bed that is available, enough open space above that bed, and villagers who have the food they need. If the hearts are showing and nothing happens, check those conditions in order before assuming the game is broken.
What the hearts actually tell you
The heart particles are a sign of willingness or an active breeding attempt. They appear once the pair is ready to breed, and they say nothing about whether the game has space to create the baby. Villagers can show hearts repeatedly while no child appears, which is why the symptom is confusing. The hearts show the first step worked; the baby still depends on the village’s population limit and the layout around the beds.

The angry-face particles that some players see alongside hearts are not documented as a separate breeding diagnostic in the community wiki pages consulted for this guide. Treat them as a sign that the interaction did not complete, and run the same checklist below.
Work through the checklist in order
Run these checks in the sequence below. Each one removes a common cause, and the first failure you find is usually the real problem.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.

- Confirm there is a valid, available bed for the baby. Beds count toward population capacity only when they are usable. A bed that looks close to the villagers but is not claimed or accessible does not add capacity. The Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial describes breeding as depending on population being below available bed capacity.
- Clear the space above the beds. The tutorial specifies two blocks of open space above each bed so a baby can bounce onto it. Remove low ceilings, slabs, or other obstructions, then retry.
- Check that the villagers have qualifying food. The tutorial lists bread, carrots, potatoes, and beetroot, and reports a 12-food-point willingness threshold. Throw the food to the villagers so they can collect it.
- Allow for the breeding cooldown. A Minecraft Wiki Villager page reports a cooldown of 6000 ticks, or five minutes, after a successful breeding attempt. During that time a second baby will not appear even if hearts show.
- Confirm your edition and version before applying a detailed design. The sources consulted do not settle every difference between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, so a breeder design built for one may not behave the same way in the other.
Bed capacity and clearance in more detail
Most failures in a village come from the beds rather than the villagers. Use the table below to compare what each check looks like when it passes and when it fails.
| Check | What passes | What fails | Source status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed availability | Villager population is below the number of usable beds | Beds exist but are unclaimed, unusable, or already full | Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial |
| Overhead clearance | Two blocks of open space above each bed | A ceiling, slab, or block one or two spaces above the bed | Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial |
| Food | Bread, carrots, potatoes, or beetroot delivered to the villagers | Other foods, or food the villagers do not collect | Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial, 12-food-point threshold |
| Cooldown | Five minutes (6000 ticks) have passed since the last successful attempt | A recent success is still within the cooldown window | Minecraft Wiki Villager page; applicability by version not confirmed |
The beds check and the clearance check are the two most often overlooked. A village can have plenty of beds on paper and still fail if a single block above one bed is solid. Walk to each bed and look upward before you assume the layout is correct.

Food, willingness, and timing
The food check is the one most players skip because the hearts make it look like everything is in order. The tutorial’s 12-food-point figure is the reported threshold for willingness, so food delivered once may not keep a villager willing for long. Feed the villagers, then give them time to collect the food before deciding the setup has failed.
Timing matters too. After a successful breeding, the cooldown can hold back the next baby even when hearts show. If you just saw a baby appear, wait the full five minutes reported by the wiki before changing anything else.

Edition and version differences
The mechanics above come from community-maintained wiki pages, and those pages were indexed at different times. The farming tutorial was crawled well before the mechanics pages, so the figures may not match the release you are playing. Confirm the following before treating any number as final:
- Which edition you are running, Java Edition or Bedrock Edition
- The exact game version shown on your title screen or launcher
- Whether the cooldown and food threshold figures on the wiki page apply to that version
If a design works in one edition but not the other, the edition difference is the likely explanation, and you should test the specific design rather than assume it transfers.

If the checklist passes and nothing happens
When every item above checks out and the hearts still do not produce a baby, work through these branches:
- Beds are valid but the village is at capacity: Add usable beds or reduce the villager count, then retry.
- Clearance looks correct but a baby still does not appear: Check the bed the villagers are actually using, not just the nearest bed, since a different bed may be the one that is blocked.
- Food was delivered but the villagers keep hearts without results: Deliver food again, wait for the villagers to collect it, and watch whether the hearts repeat.
- A baby appeared recently: Wait out the five-minute cooldown reported by the wiki before judging the setup.
- Behavior differs from the wiki in your version: Record your edition and version, then compare against the current version’s notes rather than an older wiki revision.
The sources consulted do not give a full troubleshooting procedure for every edge case, so if none of these branches explains the problem, the most reliable next step is to check the exact version you are playing against the wiki page’s version notes.

Source and date notes: the tutorial figures (food threshold, bed clearance, and bed capacity) come from the Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial. The 6000-tick cooldown comes from a Minecraft Wiki Villager page, which is a community mirror and was not confirmed for current editions. No independently verified test results are cited here.
Use this guide as a checklist, not a final rulebook. Wiki pages are edited continuously, so the numbers above reflect what those community sources reported when consulted and may change with later updates.
Do not treat the hearts as proof of a broken village. In most cases the hearts are working correctly, and the baby is being blocked by beds, clearance, food, or the cooldown.
