Reports described a short opening with in-game footage followed by AI-animated imagery. Snail Colorado’s lead developer said the marketing department made the trailer without the development team’s knowledge, and that the team did not use AI tools to develop the DLC.
What viewers saw in the ARK: Aquatica trailer
On March 19, 2025, Snail Games USA released a trailer announcing ARK: Aquatica, an underwater expansion for ARK: Survival Evolved. Contemporary reports described a roughly one-minute to 70-second video: it opened with a brief stretch of in-game footage, then shifted to scenes that appeared AI-generated or AI-animated. That account makes “entirely AI” an overstatement; the reporting says the trailer began with gameplay footage.

The criticism focused on visual oddities in the later imagery. Reports and viewers pointed to a character whose feet seemed to turn into fins and an oddly rendered octopus. Those are descriptions of the reaction and the apparent images, not an independent technical analysis of how the video was produced. PC Gamer’s coverage quoted ARK creator Syntac reacting, “This is disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourselves.” That is one creator’s response, not evidence of a consensus among players.

Studio Wildcard, the original ARK studio, directed fans to Snail Games USA Colorado for Aquatica updates and said it was focused on ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2. That statement distinguished the project from Wildcard’s own focus; it does not, by itself, establish further details about corporate or contractual responsibility.

In a March 21, 2025 interview with Pocket Tactics, Matt Kohl, identified as Lead Developer of Snail Colorado, said: “The marketing department used still images of some of our assets to create an AI-animated trailer. That was not part of the development team; we did not know that they were doing it.” His account attributes the trailer to marketing and says the development team was unaware of it while it was being made.
Did the ARK: Aquatica expansion itself use AI?
Kohl’s interview reported Snail’s position that AI tools were not used in developing Aquatica and that the trailer did not represent the finished expansion. PC Gamer also reported that account. It should be understood as the developer’s claim: the available reporting does not independently audit the production workflow or verify the eventual game build. The trailer’s reported production and the development team’s stated process are separate claims, and the first does not prove the second.

What Snail announced about the DLC
In a July 9, 2025 announcement, Snail Games USA said ARK: Aquatica would release on July 15, 2025, exclusively for PC players of ARK: Survival Evolved. That is a historical release announcement, not a current forecast. The publisher described a submerged setting with above-water islands, new survival mechanics and hazards, 21 tameable creatures, and 74 Engrams, including seven Tek Engrams. These details are the publisher’s description, not an independent assessment of the expansion.
The sources cited here do not establish the DLC’s current availability, price, or present-day player reception.
