Baldur’s Gate 3 did not prove that every role-playing game must match its scale. It did make a high-profile case for letting players shape their characters and stories, while drawing a sharp debate over whether its success should become a new industry standard. Those are different kinds of influence: attracting attention to RPGs, demonstrating appetite for consequential role-play, and changing how studios build games. The evidence is strongest for the first two—and does not establish an industry-wide production shift.
What did Baldur’s Gate 3 change?
Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is a role-playing game set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Its success made it a prominent reference point in arguments about RPGs, player choice, and the expectations audiences might bring to future games. But calling that an industry revolution can blur together cultural visibility and changes to development practice.
Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah drew that distinction in comments reported by PC Gamer: “Baldur’s Gate 3 was immensely successful—and [it] did change the landscape in terms of who was willing to look at an RPG.” He also expected the effect on development methods to be less dramatic: “But I think its impact on the way that games are actually developed is going to be more muted than people who are outside the videogame industry might be expecting.” That is one experienced developer’s assessment, not a measured industry-wide finding, but it captures the key distinction.
What do the player-choice figures show?
In a 2023 launch-period community update, Larian said that 93% of players chose a custom character for their first journey; the company included the Dark Urge in that group. Of the 7% who selected an Origin character, Gale was the most popular. These are Larian’s own figures for its players during the early launch period, not a representative survey of RPG audiences or a current preference measure. They show that players engaged with the option to define a protagonist, but they do not by themselves measure how consequential any particular choice felt.
#1 Best Overall
- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
The same Larian update reported that the game had entered Steam’s all-time top ten for concurrent players and referred to roughly 815,000 peak concurrent players in a specific anecdote. Those are launch-period reports, not current player counts. Together with the character-selection figures, they help explain why the game became a visible example in conversations about RPGs; they are not proof that the entire genre changed its design.
Why did developers resist treating it as a new standard?
A popular game can raise expectations without making its production model a sensible template for every studio. In its coverage of the debate over a “new standard,” Game Developer described conditions that helped shape Baldur’s Gate 3, including a multi-year Early Access period, a recognized intellectual property, and a clear creative vision. Those conditions are not equally available to every team.
Larian CEO and creative director Swen Vincke cautioned against assuming studios must reproduce the game’s scale: “Obviously you shouldn’t try to make a game like Baldur’s Gate 3 if you don’t have the resources to do so, but there’s other developers there who have more resources than we have.” He also rejected the idea of a single fixed bar for the medium: “I don’t think there are real standards in video games. I think there’s a lot of evolution, which is one of the fantastic things about this medium.”

The practical lesson is not that smaller RPGs should imitate the volume of a larger production, but that teams have to make choices about where to invest. Scope, resources, access to an established world, time for player feedback, and a coherent creative direction all shape what a game can deliver. A focused RPG can prioritize a different kind of agency or storytelling; scale alone does not establish whether its choices matter.

Recognition demonstrates reach and acclaim, but it is not evidence that studios changed their budgets, staffing, or methods because of one game. In an April 2024 community update, Larian recorded Baldur’s Gate 3’s BAFTA Games Awards recognition, including Best Game and the publicly voted Players’ Choice award. Larian called the BAFTA win its fifth major Game of the Year trophy since launch and said the game appeared to be the first to win at every major awards show; that “first” is Larian’s characterization.
The awards are concrete evidence of the game’s standing with voters and award bodies. They cannot establish that every RPG audience now expects similar scope, or that other developers have adopted Larian’s approach. Darrah’s distinction remains useful: a game can make more people willing to try an RPG without compelling studios to build games in the same way.

What should the next RPG take from Baldur’s Gate 3?
The clearest takeaway is an ambition to make role-playing feel worth engaging with, not an obligation to copy one production. Larian’s official Baldur’s Gate 3 site lists Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Physical Deluxe editions. The existence of multiple editions does not change the central design question raised by the game: how should a team use its own resources and creative strengths to give players meaningful ways to inhabit a role?
Baldur’s Gate 3 made that question unusually visible. The available evidence supports its importance as a cultural touchstone and a vivid example of player-centered RPG design, but not the claim that it single-handedly broke the genre or established a universal production standard.
