Why Can’t I Join My Friend’s Minecraft Realm? Fixes for Java and Bedrock

Start with edition and version: Java and Bedrock Realms do not cross-play, and both players should update. Then verify the invite, permissions, Realm status, and console online access.

If you can’t join a friend’s Minecraft Realm, first make sure you’re both using the same edition—Java or Bedrock—and the latest game release. Then check that the invitation was accepted on the account you’re signed into, your account allows multiplayer, and the owner’s Realm is active and open. Console players may also need that platform’s online-multiplayer service.

Check that you and your friend are using the same edition

Java and Bedrock Realms are separate. A Java player cannot join a Bedrock Realm, and a Bedrock player cannot join a Java Realm. Cross-play works among supported devices within the same edition, not between editions. Minecraft’s Realms overview describes Java Realms for Java players on Windows, Linux, and macOS, and Bedrock Realms for supported consoles, mobile devices, and Windows computers.

On a computer, “Minecraft on PC” doesn’t identify the edition. Check which game you launch before troubleshooting anything else.

Update both games to the latest release

Have both players install the latest release available for their platform. Different or unsupported versions can prevent multiplayer connections. When troubleshooting a standard Realm, use the regular release rather than a preview or snapshot build. Minecraft’s Realms connection troubleshooting guide and multiplayer troubleshooting guide recommend checking the game version.

Confirm the invitation and account

An invitation can be sent to an account other than the one currently signed in. Check the Microsoft or Minecraft account in the game, and ask the owner to confirm they invited that account.

Joining a Java Realm

  1. Launch Minecraft: Java Edition and select Minecraft Realms.
  2. Accept the invitation if prompted.
  3. Select Join Realm and enter the join code from the owner.

See Minecraft Help’s Java Realm joining steps if the invite or code isn’t working.

Joining a Bedrock Realm

Accept the invitation in the game’s inbox under Invites, or follow the owner’s invitation link. The in-game route is Play → Realms → Add/join Realm → Join an existing Realm. Minecraft Help explains both methods in its Bedrock invitation guide.

Ask the owner to check the Realm

The owner should verify that the subscription is active and the Realm is open. The owner does not have to be online for invited players to join, and guests do not need to buy their own Realms subscription. Minecraft states this in its Java joining guidance and multiplayer troubleshooting guidance.

Check multiplayer permissions on your account

Microsoft account privacy settings can block multiplayer or invitations, particularly on child and teen accounts. For Bedrock, check that online communication is allowed and that CLUBS and MULTIPLAYER are set to ALLOWED. A child account may need its family organizer to change these controls. Minecraft’s Microsoft account guidance covers the relevant settings.

Check your console’s online-play requirement

Console multiplayer access is separate from a Realms subscription. Minecraft Help lists Xbox Game Pass Core for Xbox, Nintendo Switch Online for Switch, and PlayStation Plus for PlayStation. Platform requirements can change, so confirm the current requirement and service availability for your console. A guest still does not need their own Realms subscription.

Refresh your session, then check service and network status

  1. Sign out of Minecraft, restart the game and device, then sign back in to the invited account. On Windows, Minecraft’s connection guide also suggests signing out of the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and other running Minecraft services before restarting.
  2. Check whether Minecraft Realms and your console or platform’s online services are available. A service outage can prevent a join even when the invitation and settings are correct.
  3. If services are operating, investigate network settings such as custom DNS or port configuration. Minecraft’s multiplayer troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
  4. If the error continues, use Minecraft’s error-code troubleshooting or contact Minecraft Support with the exact error and your platform, edition, and account details.
