Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn most cases, the link fails for one of three reasons: the Switch user is already linked to a Nintendo Account, the account being used is the wrong type (most often a parent or guardian’s account where a child account is needed), or sign-in or email verification is incomplete. The link is set once per user, so check the current state before you retry the same steps.
Check whether the Switch user is already linked
If the link option does not appear, or the link fails immediately, the user may already be linked. Nintendo’s support page for the Switch user link describes the on-console check. Confirm the Switch has an internet connection first, then:

- From the HOME Menu, select the icon for the user in question to open their My Page.
- Select User Settings, then Check Account Information.
- Select Check on This Console.
This screen can show the linked account’s email address or login ID and its family group. The account may need to be signed in before the details appear. If a linked account is shown, the user does not need a new link. The problem is which account is linked, and that needs to be settled before anything else.
Run the link steps correctly
If no account is linked, use the standard flow. Nintendo’s instruction is to select Profile, then Link to a Nintendo Account, and follow the on-screen instructions. The steps are:

- Select Profile.
- Select Link to a Nintendo Account and follow the prompts.

Be deliberate at step 5. Nintendo’s Add Users page on Nintendo Switch 2 Support states the constraint plainly: “Once linked, you cannot link it to a different Nintendo Account.” Test sign-ins, or trying a second account to see what happens, can leave you with a link you cannot undo through this flow.
Common causes and how to fix them
The user is already linked to a different account
A Switch user can be linked to only one Nintendo Account, and the normal linking flow cannot swap it for another. If the wrong account is linked, the console will not offer a second link. Nintendo’s documentation does not describe a self-service swap, so the next step is Nintendo Account support, described below. Do not assume that creating a replacement account will restore purchases or link it to a user who is already linked.

The wrong account type was used for a child
This is the most common mistake for child users. Nintendo’s guide to linking a user and a child account says children aged 12 or younger should use a child account created under a parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account. Do not enter the parent’s email address to link the child user. Use the child account’s own sign-in ID and password.
A parent’s general account already linked to that user also blocks linking a different child account to the same user. Nintendo does not describe a way around this inside the linking flow.

Email and sign-in ID are confused
Child accounts do not sign in with an email address. Nintendo’s sign-in guide directs users to the account’s sign-in ID and password. Entering an email address where a sign-in ID is expected, or the reverse, produces a sign-in failure that looks like a password problem but is not one.
Verification is incomplete
Nintendo may request a verification code sent to the registered email address even when 2-Step Verification is switched off. Check that inbox, including spam or junk folders, and enter the code while the console prompt is still active.

If 2-Step Verification is enabled, the console will ask for the code from your authenticator app. Nintendo’s 2-Step Verification page identifies Google Authenticator as a supported app. Child accounts cannot use 2-Step Verification, so a child account will not show this prompt.
The registered email is inaccessible
If the email address on the account cannot be reached, and a verification code cannot be received, Nintendo states that the registered email cannot simply be updated from the console. Contact Nintendo Account support through the regional support site and request help with account information changes. Keep the console and account details available when you contact support, since they will need to confirm ownership.

What linking does not do
Linking a Nintendo Account enables Nintendo online functions, including Nintendo Switch Online, friend features, the eShop, and social posting. It does not, by itself, move save data, downloaded software or add-on data, screenshots, or video to another console. Nintendo documents separate procedures for save-data transfer or cloud saves, virtual game cards, and copying captures to a microSD card. If your real goal is to move a user’s data to a second Switch, look for those procedures rather than repeating the link.
Regional notes
The Japan support page is the primary source for how a Switch user is linked to a Nintendo Account. The Asia and Malaysia support pages add current detail on sign-in and verification. Menu labels and recovery steps can differ by region and by system software version. If the wording on your console does not match the steps above, use your regional Nintendo support site for the exact labels and recovery options.
