Crystals are a deliberate link between Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY and the wider game series. Wizards of the Coast vision designer Yoni Skolnik said the team wanted to represent both the distinctive elements of individual games and motifs recurring across the franchise—and identified crystals as one of those recurring motifs. The set’s official card list names five Crystal cards.
Why crystals matter to the crossover
The set brings characters from all sixteen mainline FINAL FANTASY games into Magic, according to Square Enix’s May 12, 2025 announcement. That breadth posed a design challenge: the cards needed to evoke individual games while also feeling connected to the franchise as a whole.

Skolnik described that balance in Wizards of the Coast’s vision design account. He said crystals were one example of a recurring series element, adding: “One key example of that is the crystals, which were a staple of most of the games’ plots in the early era.” His wording is deliberately qualified: it describes most early-era plots, not every game in the series.
That makes crystals a useful connective motif for a crossover spanning many entries. It does not establish that crystals are equally important in every FINAL FANTASY game, or that their prominence can be measured against the games themselves. “As central” is an editorial comparison, not a published statistic.

Which Crystal cards are in the set?
Wizards’ official card list, dated June 4, 2025, names five Crystal cards:
- The Wind Crystal
- The Water Crystal
- The Darkness Crystal
- The Fire Crystal
- The Earth Crystal
The names identify their respective elements or forces. The official list establishes these five cards; it does not rank them or identify one as the definitive Crystal card.

How the cards fit the series—and where the comparison stops
The creative team’s stated aim was not to turn the set into a complete lore encyclopedia. Wizards says its designers sought specific references for longtime fans while making the card designs resonate with people who may not know each game’s lore. Crystals therefore work as recognizable franchise shorthand, alongside references tied to particular entries.
Square Enix announced the set on May 12, 2025, and gave June 13, 2025 as its launch date. The five card names and the designers’ explanation support the claim that crystals were intentionally included as a cross-series motif. They do not provide a count of how often crystals appear throughout the franchise or a measure of their importance relative to other recurring elements.

What to know if you’re collecting the cards
The five names are card identities, not a statement about how likely any one card is to appear in a pack. Wizards’ collecting information discusses product variants for the set, but does not establish Crystal-card pull odds or current market prices.
As one example of the set’s variant system, borderless Traveling Chocobo cards in non-foil and traditional foil can appear in both Play Boosters and Collector Boosters. The serialized golden version is numbered 1 to 77 and appears only in English-language Collector Boosters; Wizards says the non-serialized versions are mechanically identical. Those details concern Traveling Chocobo, not the availability or odds of finding a Crystal card.
