In Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Luca Marinelli’s character Neil wears a bandana that recalls Solid Snake. The look also revives a remark Hideo Kojima reportedly made about Marinelli in 2020: with a bandana, he would be the “spitting image of Solid Snake.” Kojima later clarified that Neil is not Snake; the resemblance is visual, not a confirmed Metal Gear crossover.
Who plays Neil in Death Stranding 2?
Italian actor Luca Marinelli plays Neil, a character in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Marinelli’s bandana-wearing appearance in the game’s trailer prompted renewed attention to Kojima’s earlier comparison. Insider Gaming and GamesRadar+ connected the trailer image to the reported 2020 comment.

What did Kojima mean by “spitting image of Solid Snake”?
GamesRadar+ reported that Kojima wrote on Instagram in 2020: “Also, I think if he donned a bandana, he’d be the spitting image of Solid Snake!” The remark was conditional on the bandana, the accessory that later appeared on Marinelli as Neil in the trailer. The original Instagram post was not directly verified by the reporting cited here, so the wording is best understood as a quote reproduced by GamesRadar+.
Is Neil actually Solid Snake?
No. Kojima said Marinelli was not playing Snake. In GamesRadar+’s account of Kojima’s comments at the Sydney Film Festival, Kojima recalled telling the actor: “no, you’re not Snake. You just have a bandana on your head!” Neil is a Death Stranding character, not a confirmed appearance by Solid Snake or evidence of a Metal Gear crossover.

Why did Kojima cast Marinelli?
GamesRadar+ reported that Kojima said he wanted an actor who could surpass Mads Mikkelsen’s performance as Cliff in the first Death Stranding. Kojima praised Marinelli’s performance, while the Snake comparison was about the actor’s look with a bandana—not the character’s identity or role in the story.
What is Death Stranding 2: On the Beach?
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is a Kojima Productions game for PlayStation 5. Its official product information lists June 26, 2025 as the release date in local time. Kojima Productions’ product page provides the platform and release details.
In a launch interview, PlayStation discussed the game’s character-scanning and design process, including 4D scanning for key characters. That production context helps explain the attention paid to performances and character likenesses, but it does not change the distinction Kojima made: Marinelli plays Neil, not Snake.
