Koroks hide because the games treat finding them as a playful game of hide-and-seek. Nintendo’s official guides present the hiding as part of exploration: Koroks are scattered across Hyrule, and players are encouraged to notice things that look slightly wrong, then investigate. Nintendo does not give one canonical in-world reason for why every Korok hides, so anything beyond the hide-and-seek framing is interpretation, and this article labels it as such.
What Nintendo’s official guides say
The clearest statement comes from the official Breath of the Wild Explorer’s Guide, which tells players: “Koroks are a big part of the magic of living in Hyrule, so the least you can do is indulge them in their game of hide-and-seek.” The guide speaks as Nintendo’s editorial voice, not as a named designer or director, so it should be read as the official framing of the game rather than a developer’s explanation of motive.
Nintendo’s Play Nintendo tips for Tears of the Kingdom use similar language, describing the creatures this way: “Small creatures named Koroks are hidden throughout Hyrule.” Again, this is unsigned official copy. Neither source explains why the Koroks are hidden in a narrative sense, such as fear, shyness, or survival.
How the hiding works in practice
The guides do not ask players to search at random. They point to environmental details that feel out of place, which is the actual discovery method the games teach:

- Suspicious treetops that look like they are hiding something.
- Mysterious pinwheels, as described in the Breath of the Wild Explorer’s Guide.
- Unexplained rock circles or arrangements that seem unnatural.
- A stone ring with a missing stone, which Nintendo’s Play Nintendo tips use as an example of the kind of oddity worth checking.
Once you spot a Korok, the reward loop begins. The Explorer’s Guide also describes Hestu’s happy dance and maraca solo when Korok Seeds are delivered, which makes the payoff part of the presentation.
Why the hiding matters in Tears of the Kingdom
In Tears of the Kingdom, the hiding has a practical purpose. Finding or helping Koroks yields Korok Seeds, which Nintendo’s official guide says can be given to Hestu to increase inventory space for weapons, shields, and bows. That makes each hidden Korok a source of progression, not only a curiosity.

Some Tears of the Kingdom Koroks carry large backpacks and ask for help reuniting with their friends. Nintendo says reunification yields two Korok Seeds. This is an in-game reward, not a real-world statistic.

Why Koroks are described as shy
You may see fan posts describing Koroks as shy because they are hard to see. That is a fan interpretation, not something the official guides state. The documented design is simpler: Koroks are placed where players must look closely, and the official text frames the search as play.

Interpretation: why hidden encounters work as design
The official material does not say this directly, but the design logic is clear. Hidden encounters reward attention to the environment, and they connect exploration to a useful collectible in Tears of the Kingdom. Presenting the Koroks as hiding makes discovery feel like a game the player has joined, rather than a checklist. This is an analytical reading of the design, not a Nintendo quote.

On Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the Zelda Notes app can track Korok discovery achievement progress. This applies only to those editions. On other versions, the app’s tracking should not be assumed, and the official guides’ clue-based approach remains the way to find Koroks.
