When File Explorer keeps crashing on Windows 11, the explorer.exe process is stopping, hanging, or restarting. Because the same process draws the desktop and taskbar, a crash can also make the taskbar disappear or briefly return you to a blank desktop. The fastest reliable approach is to note exactly when it fails, install current Windows updates, restart Explorer, check system-file integrity, and collect crash evidence before changing drivers or resetting the PC.
There is no single “Explorer crash” diagnosis. A Windows update, damaged system component, display or storage driver, shell extension, user profile, network location, or a very large synchronized tree can each trigger the same symptom. The sequence below separates those cases and starts with reversible actions.

What does a Windows 11 File Explorer crash look like?
File Explorer may close as soon as a folder opens, freeze while drawing a window, restart repeatedly, or fail to launch after sign-in. If the shell restarts, the taskbar, desktop icons, Start menu, and notification area can vanish and then reload. Microsoft describes the practical impact plainly: when File Explorer will not open or start, finding files, opening folders, and managing storage become difficult.
Record whether you can still use other applications. If only one Explorer window fails, the problem may be limited to a folder, preview, network path, or shell integration. If the desktop and taskbar disappear together, the wider Windows shell is involved.

Why does File Explorer keep crashing on Windows 11?
The visible crash is a symptom, not a root-cause label. Match the timing and location of the failure to the likely trigger before choosing a repair.
Windows updates and regressions
A newly installed cumulative update can introduce a shell regression, while a missing update can leave a known fault unresolved. Microsoft’s July 2025 release notes documented slower File Explorer navigation, context menus, and file launching when additional SharePoint sites were synchronized. That issue is especially relevant when crashes or freezes occur only inside a large work or school sync tree.
Recommended Free Tools
Damaged or missing system files
Interrupted updates, disk errors, or previous software failures can damage Windows components that Explorer loads. System File Checker is Microsoft’s supported first integrity check when core files may be corrupt.
Drivers and hardware
Graphics, storage, chipset, and network drivers can destabilize a process that displays windows and reads many kinds of files. Intel recommends collecting crash dumps, reviewing Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor, and checking Device Manager for warning icons before replacing drivers. A driver warning is evidence to investigate, not proof that the driver caused Explorer to fail.
Shell extensions and context-menu handlers
Cloud-storage clients, archive tools, antivirus products, and other applications can add right-click commands or preview handlers. If Explorer crashes only when you right-click, preview, or open a particular file type, test that action and note which integrations are present. Remove or disable one suspected integration at a time so you can reverse the change.
User profiles, permissions, and locations
A crash limited to one Windows account points toward a profile or per-user setting. A crash limited to a mapped drive, removable disk, SharePoint folder, or other network location points toward that location, its connection, or its contents rather than the entire shell.

Is there a known Windows 11 26H2 Explorer crash?
Windows 11 version 26H2 is generally available as of October 26, 2026. Microsoft documented a specific post-26H2 problem on some Azure Virtual Desktop hosts that use FSLogix: users could see a black screen or failure to load the desktop, and application event logs could show Windows Explorer crashes.
Microsoft marked that incident resolved by updates released October 13, 2026, including KB5127648. Updated machines do not need the temporary workaround for this incident. If an affected managed host has not yet received the fix, an administrator can apply the matching Known Issue Rollback policy and restart. For a temporary local recovery, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter. That command restores the shell; it does not repair the underlying cause.
How should I troubleshoot Windows 11 Explorer crashes?
Work from the least disruptive checks to deeper recovery. Keep a short log of the trigger and the result of each step; that record prevents repeated changes and gives support useful evidence.
-
Record the trigger and scope
Write down whether the failure occurs at sign-in, when opening one folder, during a context-menu action, while browsing a network or SharePoint location, immediately after an update, or only under a heavy workload. Try a second Windows account if one is available. Note whether the taskbar and desktop disappear, whether other applications remain usable, and whether the same folder fails on another computer.

Install Windows updates, then restart
Open Settings, choose Windows Update, select Check for updates, install what is offered, and restart even if Windows does not request one. After rebooting, test the exact action that previously failed. If the problem began after a specific update, record its KB number and consult Microsoft’s Windows release-health information before attempting a rollback.
-
Restart the Explorer shell for temporary access
Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, select Windows Explorer and choose Restart. If it is not listed, select Run new task, typeexplorer.exe, and press Enter. This can bring back the taskbar and desktop so you can save work and collect logs, but a successful restart is not a diagnosis. Also popular on Amazon

Check Windows system integrity
Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run
sfc /scannow. Let the scan finish, follow any repair message it provides, restart, and repeat the original test. If corruption cannot be repaired, keep the scan result for the later recovery or support step instead of repeatedly running unrelated cleaners. -
Reduce resource pressure
Microsoft’s Explorer-start guidance includes allowing Windows to manage virtual memory automatically, running Disk Cleanup, and using the System Maintenance troubleshooter. Check that the system drive has free space, close unusually heavy applications, and then retest. A memory or disk-pressure change that helps only temporarily is a clue to record, not a permanent fix by itself.

Collect crash evidence before changing drivers or extensions
Intel’s built-in-tools guidance recommends enabling and collecting crash dumps, reviewing Event Viewer application and system logs, checking Reliability Monitor, and inspecting Device Manager for devices with driver warnings. Capture the crash time, the failing module or event name, the Windows build, and the action that preceded the failure. Export or copy the entries before uninstalling software, because a driver change can remove useful evidence.
-
Test the suspected location or integration
If one folder fails, copy a small, non-sensitive sample to a local folder and compare the behavior. If only right-click or preview causes the crash, avoid that action while you test shell integrations one at a time. For a network or SharePoint tree, test a local folder and a smaller synchronized set; this distinguishes a location-specific workload from a shell-wide failure.
-
Use recovery options only after backing up
When the supported checks and evidence collection do not stabilize Explorer, Microsoft lists Automatic Repair and a PC reset as later options. Back up personal files first, record encryption or sign-in requirements, and understand that a reset is more disruptive than restarting the shell or repairing files. On enterprise-managed systems, coordinate any rollback or reset with the administrator.
-
Escalate with a reproducible report
If the crash remains intermittent or affects multiple accounts, submit feedback through Feedback Hub as Microsoft requests. Include the trigger, Windows version and update history, account scope, event and Reliability Monitor entries, dump details, and the steps that already failed. A support technician or remote-support service can interpret those artifacts when the logs identify a driver, extension, or profile issue but do not point to a safe fix.

Which fix fits the symptom?
Choose a remedy by trigger, scope, evidence, and reversibility. The table keeps a narrow symptom from leading to an unnecessarily destructive repair.
| Observed pattern | First checks | Evidence to collect | Relative risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Started after Windows update | Install current updates; check the exact KB and release-health notice | Update history, build number, crash time | Low; rollback only after confirmation |
| Taskbar and desktop vanish together | Restart explorer.exe; check shell events |
Application event log, Reliability Monitor, dump | Low for restart; root cause still open |
| Only one folder or file type fails | Test a local copy; examine previews and context-menu actions | Path, file type, extension list, reproduction steps | Low when integrations are changed one at a time |
| Only network or SharePoint locations fail | Compare with a local folder and a smaller sync set | Sync scope, connection state, timing, update history | Low; avoid deleting synchronized data |
| Multiple accounts fail and Device Manager shows warnings | Collect dumps and logs; investigate the flagged device | Driver version, warning code, event details | Moderate; change one driver and keep rollback information |
| Repairs fail and corruption persists | Back up, then consider Automatic Repair or reset | All previous results and a backup verification | High; can remove applications or settings |
What should I do for common Explorer crash patterns?
Explorer crashes immediately after sign-in
Use Task Manager to launch explorer.exe, then check Windows Update and system integrity. If the shell works under another account, focus on the affected profile and its per-user startup or shell integrations rather than resetting the whole PC.
The taskbar disappears and keeps reloading
This indicates repeated shell restarts, not necessarily a damaged taskbar. Restart Explorer once to regain control, then use Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer to capture the faulting application and module while the timing is fresh.
Explorer freezes when opening a large synchronized tree
Compare a local folder with the synchronized location and note whether navigation, context menus, or launching files trigger the delay. Microsoft’s July 2025 SharePoint-sync regression makes sync scope an important clue; installing current updates is the supported first move.

Check whether the computer is an Azure Virtual Desktop host using FSLogix and whether users also see a black screen or desktop-loading failure. Apply updates containing the October 13, 2026 resolution, including KB5127648; use the documented workaround only on an unupdated affected host.

Microsoft Learn gives a stop-error background breakdown of 70% third-party driver code, 10% hardware, 5% Microsoft code, and 15% unknown. The publication year is not stated, and the figures describe stop errors, not a measured distribution of Windows Explorer crashes. Use them only to justify looking at drivers and hardware when your own logs support that direction; do not treat the percentages as the odds for your Explorer failure.

Can third-party repair software replace these steps?
No automatic utility can be assumed to repair a crashing application. Microsoft’s update, restart, integrity, evidence, and recovery sequence provides a safer baseline because each action is documented and reversible until the recovery stage. If you use a third-party diagnostic or support service, provide it the logs and reproduction notes and avoid tools that promise a guaranteed fix without identifying the failing component.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will restarting Windows Explorer close my running applications?
Restarting the shell normally targets the desktop, taskbar, and File Explorer windows rather than terminating unrelated applications. Save important work first, because a system that is already unstable can behave unpredictably and an open Explorer operation may not complete.
How can I tell whether the 26H2 incident applies to my computer?
The documented incident is limited to some Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix and is associated with black screens or desktop-loading failures. A standalone Windows 11 PC with ordinary local profiles is not the target scenario; check the host type and update level before applying an enterprise rollback policy.
Should I uninstall the last Windows update immediately?
First install any newer update and check Microsoft’s release-health entry for the specific KB. Removing an update without confirming an update-linked regression can discard security fixes and hide the real cause, so preserve the update history and crash evidence before taking that step.
What information will a support technician need?
Provide the Windows edition and build, update history, exact trigger, whether another account reproduces it, and the times of several failures. Include Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor entries plus any dump or Device Manager details; these let support compare repeated crashes instead of guessing from the symptom alone.
Can a File Explorer crash damage my files?
A process crash does not by itself prove that files are damaged, but an interrupted copy, move, rename, or synchronization operation can leave an incomplete operation. Avoid repeating writes while the shell is unstable, verify important files from another application or backup, and resolve the crash before large transfers.
