Steam has not established one universal Firewatch-specific crash cause. Work through these seven reversible checks first, retesting the game after each change.
Why can Firewatch crash on a Steam Deck marked Verified?
Steam defines its Verified category this way: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” That is compatibility guidance, not a guarantee that an individual Deck, installation, SteamOS build, or configuration cannot encounter a crash. Steam’s published guidance covers general Steam Deck troubleshooting; it does not identify a single cause for every Firewatch crash or establish that one step fixes all cases. Steam Deck Verified categories and the current Firewatch store listing are useful places to check its compatibility details and status.
Firewatch’s official patch notes mention improved performance and threading on all platforms in a 2018 update, but do not identify a Steam Deck-specific crash fix. The available official sources also do not provide a published Firewatch-on-Deck crash rate.
Try these 7 steps, from least disruptive to escalation
This order is a practical sequence based on the scope and reversibility of the actions—not an official Firewatch-specific procedure. Make one change at a time and retest, so you can tell whether it affected the problem.

Install SteamOS updates and restart
Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install any available update, then restart the Deck. Launch Firewatch again after the restart. Steam recommends updating and restarting when troubleshooting system instability. Steam Deck general troubleshooting

Temporarily close or disable third-party apps and plugins
Exit third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode; if needed, disable plugins temporarily and restart before retesting. This is an isolation test, not evidence that a particular app or plugin causes Firewatch crashes. Verify Firewatch’s installed files
In your Library, open Firewatch’s Properties > Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Steam recommends file verification when a game crashes or content is missing. It can take several minutes; Steam notes that some local configuration files may fail verification normally, so that result alone does not necessarily mean the installation is damaged. Test another Proton compatibility setting
Open Firewatch’s Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and try the latest Proton version available in the list. Retest after each change rather than switching several settings at once. Steam suggests Proton testing as general Deck troubleshooting; it does not establish Proton as the cause of a particular Firewatch crash. Lower graphics settings for a test
Choose a lower graphics preset or reduce individual graphics settings, then see whether the crash recurs. Steam lists reducing graphics load as a general troubleshooting step for instability or performance issues, not as a confirmed Firewatch-specific fix. Steam Deck general troubleshooting

Review compatibility details and current reports
Check Firewatch’s current store listing and its compatibility details in the Steam Library or store; ratings and reports can change. If the problem persists, search the Steam Deck discussions for reports that match your symptoms and setup. A similar report may offer a useful lead, but it does not by itself confirm the cause of your crash.

Contact support before broad recovery steps
If the Deck remains unstable beyond Firewatch, contact Steam Support. For a Firewatch-specific problem, the game’s official support page lists support options, including [email protected].
SteamOS rollback, repair, and reset options are broader recovery measures, not demonstrated Firewatch fixes. Reserve them for persistent device-level problems after narrower checks and support. Match the next step to the crash pattern
- Firewatch crashes on launch: Start with the restart, third-party-app isolation, and file verification. Then test a different Proton setting, one change at a time.
- The game runs, then crashes later: Test lower graphics settings and check for current compatibility reports. Note what you were doing when the crash occurred before contacting support.
- You see a black screen: Treat it as a symptom rather than proof of a specific cause. Try the same steps in sequence and note whether the screen appears before or after the game begins loading.
- Other games or SteamOS are unstable too: The issue may be broader than Firewatch. Prioritize system updates and Steam Support before considering operating-system recovery.
