That makes Poison thematically fitting, though official sources do not confirm that this lore was the original designers’ reason for choosing the type.
What types is Gengar?
Gengar is officially classified as both Ghost and Poison. The Pokémon Company’s Pokédex lists it as Ghost/Poison and identifies it as the final stage of the Gastly-to-Haunter-to-Gengar evolution line. The official Gengar Pokédex entry and Gastly’s official Pokédex page establish the classification across the line.

This is not just a label used in one game reference: an official Pokémon anime episode listing also identifies Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar as Ghost/Poison. The episode page for “A Ghost of a Chance” corroborates the typing in other franchise material.
Why does Poison fit Gengar’s evolution line?
The strongest explanation in the official lore is Gastly’s description. Its Pokédex entry says: “It wraps its opponent in its gas-like body, slowly weakening its prey by poisoning it through the skin.” Gastly’s gas body and ability to poison prey give the family a clear thematic link to Poison as well as Ghost.

That explanation applies through the evolution line: Gastly evolves into Haunter and then Gengar, while all three retain the Ghost/Poison classification. It is a lore-based interpretation of why the type makes sense, not a documented statement of the creators’ intent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is there an official explanation for the original typing choice?
The official references confirm Gengar’s typing and provide lore that makes Poison coherent, but they do not explain the historical design decision. They do not establish whether the original developers chose Poison for game balance, a particular design influence, or another reason. Without a creator interview or development note, those claims would be speculation.

Other franchise material reinforces the association without resolving that question. An official Pokémon Trading Card Game reference includes a Gengar card with Poison energy and a Poison Jab attack that poisons the defending Pokémon. The Platinum—Arceus Card-Dex is further evidence of the Poison theme, not a record of the original typing rationale.
